Communications Ministry, two others recognised for cutting red tape

KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications Ministry is among three ministries recognised for successfully implementing reforms to reduce bureaucratic red tape, earning a special certificate of appreciation for the achievement.
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the ministry significantly improved the approval process for foreign film scripts, reducing the timeline from 30 days to just seven, resulting in regulatory cost savings of up to RM2.4 million per production.
"This, in turn, enhances Malaysia's competitiveness as a preferred destination for international film production," he said in a Facebook post yesterday.
The ministry's secretary-general, Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, received the special certificate from Shamsul Azri at a ceremony in Putrajaya on Tuesday.
Another ministry recognised for its achievement is the Housing and Local Government Ministry, where reforms were driven through the Fire and Rescue Department, which successfully reduced the approval time for Electric Vehicle Charging Bay Plan Certifications from 28 days to just three.
He said the department also expedited the approval process for non-system-based technical plan certifications, reducing it from 30 days to just seven.
"This was achieved through streamlined procedures and the strengthening of the e-Premis system and development of a central data repository, resulting in annual regulatory cost savings of RM1.776 million," he said.
Meanwhile, the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) successfully reduced barriers to financing in the aerospace sector, generating RM17 million in regulatory savings for 50 small and medium enterprises by boosting production capacity by up to 30 percent.
"Gross profit margins increased by over 20 percent through automation and certification, further strengthening the supply chain and creating more high-skilled jobs. Reforms are being intensified and improvements accelerated," he said.
Housing and Local Government Ministry secretary-general Datuk Noor Azman Taib and MITI Strategic Planning Division senior director M. Punitha Veni, received the certificates on behalf of their respective ministries. – Bernama

Kota MADANI project to ease civil servants' burden in Putrajaya

PUTRAJAYA: The Kota MADANI smart city project in Precinct 19 is designed to alleviate the housing burden for civil servants while enhancing workplace efficiency, according to Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. The first phase will see the construction of 3,000 residential units, part of a larger plan to deliver 10,000 units to address the current shortage of 12,000 government staff quarters. Shamsul Azri expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for approving the project, which was launched today. Kota MADANI's innovative urban design includes a vertical school and nearby public facilities, reducing living costs and improving quality of life. 'With everything within walking distance, it saves fuel and time while ensuring peace of mind for working parents,' Shamsul Azri said. Spanning 41.28 hectares, the RM4 billion project will accommodate over 30,000 residents. It incorporates AI, digital infrastructure, and green mobility as part of its smart city framework. Developed under a public-private partnership with Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd, the project follows a build-lease-maintain-transfer (BLMT) model. Kota MADANI aligns with the CHASE vision—Clean, Healthy, Advanced, Safe, and Eco-friendly—positioning Putrajaya as a model city embodying MADANI values.

Urban Renewal Act must provide channels for appeal and redress, says Lam Thye

PETALING JAYA: While urban renewal is necessary for national development and better quality of life, the process must be fair and transparent, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye ( pic ). The Alliance for a Safe Community chairman said he welcomes the proposed Urban Renewal Act but urged the government to ensure that the process is people-centred and inclusive, particularly for those directly affected. 'The Act must uphold clear guidelines and a consultation process where all affected stakeholders must be consulted at every stage from planning to implementation. ALSO READ: Urban Renewal Act must be fair and transparent, says Dr Wee 'Property owners and tenants must be offered fair and timely compensation based on current market value. 'If relocation is required, transitional housing or rental support should be provided to ensure no one is displaced unfairly or left without shelter,' he said in a statement on Thursday (June 26). An independent appeals board or tribunal should be established for those affected to seek redress, with a reasonable minimum consent threshold set among property owners before redevelopment proceeds, he added. 'Urban renewal must also serve the wider public interest by incorporating community benefits such as green spaces, facilities and accessible infrastructure,' he said. Lee noted that the selection of developers must be done through open and transparent tender processes to prevent abuse or favouritism. ALSO READ: Revitalisation must be for all 'Urban renewal can only succeed if it is people-centred, not profit-driven,' he said, adding that the alliance stands ready to contribute to making the Act a model of fair, sustainable and inclusive development. Previously, the Kuala Lumpur Residents Action for Sustainable Development Community, which comprises 74 residents' associations, six NGOs and one university, submitted a memorandum to all MPs urging them to give serious attention to the proposed Act. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming reportedly said in April that the Bill is now in its final stages before being tabled in Parliament in July, having been submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers for final vetting and refinement.

When Hadi Awang's son-in-law has a crystal ball foretelling first Chinese PM emerging in 2058

AS twice former primer Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad dropped by the National Health Institute (IJN) yesterday (June 25) to visit his foe-turned-friend Tan Sri Hadi Awang, one would have expected the latter to comment on the alleged racial incitement unleased by his son-in-law Zaharuddin Muhammad. Riding on the recent appointment of Datuk Johnny Lim Engh Seng as the first Chinese military officer to climb to the rank of Lieutenant-General in the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), the Singai Buloh PAS chief has made headlines with his prophecy that Malaysia can now expect 'its first Chinese Prime Minister – the 50th – by 2058'! In all frankness Zaharuddin would probably not have earned the wrath of DAP national adviser Lim Guan Eng had he not attached on his Facebook post image of the Melaka-born officer who was recently conferred the prestigious three-star rank in the country's military. At best, the retaliation could be milder if he were to stick to his insinuation that 'both parents of the (imaginary) Kg Sungai Baru-born PM were granted Malaysian citizenship via the Malaysia My Second Home scheme 23 years earlier'. Interestingly, Zaharuddin has uploaded back his controversial post which he had deleted earlier by justifying that his action was not one of cowardice but because 'it was swamped by cybertroopers whose only intention is to destroy truth'. Sadly, no PAS backing He further defended his action that while he had 'no explicit or implicit' intention to belittle Johnny Lim's military promotion, this should not be made a precursor to the appointment of a non-Muslim/non-Bumiputera PM appointment in the future. On this note, Zaharuddin has contemplated taking legal action against DAP's deputy secretary-general Steven Sim Chee Keong on grounds of prejudice by having accused him of criticising Johnny Lim's appointment by virtue of him (Johnny Lim) being a Chinese. Also under his legal radar is social news site World of Buzz which Zaharuddin claimed had spined his original post with the headline 'PAS Politician Warns that Firat Malaysian Chinese Lientenant-General Will Lead to Non-Malay PM in the Future'. Whatever said and done, the joke is that PAS is seemingly distancing itself from defending the son-on-law of the Islamist party's supreme leader but instead chooses 'to celebrate diversity'. 'The appointment of Datuk Johnny Lim as ATM's Lieutenant-General is a historic event that should be celebrated by all citizens, not questioned, let alone belittled simply because of his racial background,' justified party secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan. 'The ability, achievement, progress and success of any Malaysian in any field is good news for all, not the other way around. Congratulation from PAS to Lieutenant-General Datuk Johnny Lim.' With such tone, one wonders if Zaharuddin would be dealt a similar blow that befell Perak state assembly opposition leader and former Perak commissioner Razman Zakaria who did not receive any party backing following a slew of slanders on political opponents. – June 26, 2025
