Martin on Dessers injury, 'outside noise' & shots faced

Yahoo10 hours ago
Russell Martin has been speaking to the media before Rangers face Alloa Atheltic in the Premier Sports Cup this weekend.
Here are the key lines from the Ibrox boss:
The knee injury suffered by Cyriel Dessers in midweek as not as bad as first feared. The striker is "still stiff and sore" but could be fit to face Club Brugge on Tuesday night.
On reports Jefte is poised for a £6m move to Palmeiras: "I think the club will update you as and when it becomes something. He's in this morning. I guess that's all I can give you as the manager right now."
On links to Real Betis defender Nobel Mendy: "He doesn't play for us, so I can't tell you anything about him. I've never met a kid, never spoke to him in my life. So, yeah, I don't really know."
Martin won't "make 11 changes" but is set to shuffle the team for the Alloa tie, which is one Rangers "want to win but also have to balance". He says: "We had five games in 14 days. Some of the guys played a lot of minutes. So it's a chance for some people to get on the pitch."
On Rangers' Scottish Cup defeat to lower-league Queen's Park last season: "It's completely gone. Some of them [the players] are probably part of that. I don't see any benefit in me bringing it up."
After struggling to break down Dundee's low block in the 1-1 draw last weekend, Rangers have "done a lot of work on that since and hopefully you'll see that tomorrow".
On criticism of Rangers' early-season performances, Martin is keen to block out "outside noise". He adds: "When you come and work for a big club like this, you have to accept that there's going to be so many opinions, ex-players, supporters, but we have to just focus on what we can focus on. So it really doesn't affect, or it shouldn't affect what we're doing here."
Martin says he was speaking to a member of the maintenance staff who said, "We are turning the tank around gaffer" and that's exactly how he feels about the situation.
Martin "loved" that the players were frustrated with some of the aspects of the performance in Plzen "because I think their understanding is growing. Their belief in what they're doing is growing. And at some point, it will all really pay off for them".
On Rangers conceding 97 shots in their opening six games, Martin is "not happy" with it but says "perspective and context" is required.
He adds: "I got made aware of it this week by the analysts who then did a real detailed breakdown of it. So over half the shots were from well outside the box. The two games that we've given away too many chances are Panathinaikos and Plzen, and we're playing two teams away from home in Europe. They're 2-0 and 3-0 down and committing numbers forward that we haven't usually seen them doing. So we can definitely negate that and stop that."
Martin has "no problem" with Andy Halliday criticising his tactics: "I like Andy, I regard him as a really good ex-team-and a good person. But when you work in the media, you have to give an opinion, right? Although I never have said we're going to play an inverted full-back, so I have told him that."

Brendan Rodgers delighted with Friday night victory under the lights at Paradise

Brendan Rodgers was delighted with his side's performance as they defeated Falkirk 4-1 at home to progress to the last eight of the Premier Sports Cup. Daizen Maeda gave the Hoops a first-half lead, while second-half goals from Alistair Johnston, Dane Murray and a Falkirk own goal set the seal on an emphatic victory for the cup holders. They will find out who they face when the draw for the last eight is made on Saturday night, and while the focus from tomorrow will be on the UEFA Champions League play-off tie against FC Kairat on Wednesday night, the Celtic manager reflected on an impressive display from his side under the lights on Friday night. Speaking to Celtic TV after the game, he said: 'I thought it was a very good performance. We started the game where we wanted to in that first five minutes. "The tempo was really good, we were precise in our passing and scored some outstanding goals. 'To be fair to Scott Bain, he's made some very good saves for them. "Falkirk are a dangerous team if you let them play because they've got good flexibility and good technical players, but I think we dominated the game and, overall, I'm really pleased.' Alistair Johnston's performance, including his superb goal, earned him a well-deserved Man of the Match Award, and his manager was pleased with his contribution. 'We said to him at half-time that he needed to come inside the pressure, and that was a great example,' said Brendan Rodgers, 'and it was a wonderful finish. He guided it into the far corner, so I'm really pleased for him. 'Every game, the opening five minutes is very important for us, so that's something we want to bring to the game on Wednesday. 'Being at home in the first leg, you want to bring an advantage away with you, so if we play like that and put in that performance then we can have a really good opportunity to take a lead away with us.' Fixtures Celtic Vs. Falkirk - Fri, Aug 15th 2025, 19:45 Final score: 4 - 1

Ibrox debutants & on-song Hearts - things to watch in Premier Sports Cup

Knockout football has veered into view this weekend with the second round of the Premier Sports Cup. Holders Celtic got the ball rolling on Friday with a 4-1 win over Falkirk, while third-tier Alloa Athletic's reward for topping their group is a visit to Ibrox to take on Russell Martin's stumbling Rangers. Ayr United visit Championship rivals Partick Thistle, Aberdeen are away to another second-tier side in Greenock Morton, with relegated St Johnstone hosting top-flight Motherwell. Off the back of Thursday's European action, Dundee United and Hibernian visit Premiership opposition in the shape of Kilmarnock and promoted Livingston, respectively. Here's what to look out for across the eight matches... Hearts 'good enough' to win trophies - McInnes Motherwell's Miller completes £4.75m Udinese move Can Hearts maintain perfect start under McInnes? Derek McInnes made it clear in his pre-match news conference on Wednesday that he is targeting silverware in his first season with Hearts, who haven't won this competition since 1963. Hearts don't have the best record in Paisley but can take heart from a gritty Scottish Cup win on penalties there last season. They also go into the match off six straight wins, having beaten two of last season's top-six Premiership teams already. They have an opportunity to take a third scalp against St Mirren and McInnes was bullish when asked about his team's prospects in the cup competitions. "I've said this to them a few times. There's not one player should have signed for Hearts without having that aspiration to win a trophy here," the former Kilmarnock and Aberdeen boss said. "If we don't win the cup, it doesn't mean we were wrong to say it. I don't think you're setting yourself up for a fall. We do believe we're good enough to go the full way and there's no point believing otherwise." The head coach has talked the talk. His team now need to walk the walk. Rangers debuts for Moore & Aasgaard? Patterns have emerged in Russell Martin's six competitive games in charge of Rangers this season, some unwanted. Ridiculous amount of shots faced in some matches and slow, ponderous build-up play, particularly against teams favouring a low block. One imagines that will be Alloa Athletic's gameplan at Ibrox in Saturday's evening kick-off. However, Martin said before Tuesday's defeat by Viktoria Plzen that summer signings Thelo Aasgaard and Mikey Moore could both be fit to make debuts this weekend, while Hamza Igamane could return. Will Martin make sweeping changes and grant opportunities to fringe members of his squad or will he look to build understanding and favour continuity? How will United & Hibs cope after European travails? Both Dundee United and Hibernian were in Conference League qualifying action on Thursday evening, but with mixed fortunes. While Hibs progressed to the play-off round with a 4-3 aggregate win against Partizan after extra time, United endured the agony of defeat on penalties after being tied 4-4 with Rapid Vienna following 210 minutes of football. The packed schedule that accompanies European football is a significant challenge for teams as they attempt to maintain domestic form while attempting to secure a group-stage spot and the riches that brings. United have taken one point from the two league matches that have immediately followed their European efforts this season, while Hibs have had more joy having claimed four points. With both facing top-flight opposition on the road this weekend, their squad depth will be tested again. Can 'mature' Kirk down Motherwell? Tyrone Smith, BBC Sport Scotland Having completed his multi-million pound move from Motherwell to Udinese, the spotlight won't fall on Lennon Miller, when his former club travel to St Johnstone on Saturday. So perhaps it will fall on another talented youngster - 21-year-old Saints striker Makenzie Kirk. The Perth side may have been relegated from the Premiership last season, but Kirk caught the eye, netting 11 times. St Johnstone boss Simo Valakari has confirmed there has, unsurprisingly, been transfer interest in the Northern Irish striker. He added: "These players are very rare and to have a player at his age who still has a lot of potential to fulfil - of course there will be interest. "He is our player, we don't have the urgency or panic to sell. I would be more than happy if he is our player when this window closes." Despite being in and out of the Saints starting XI this season, he has still scored four goals. "He has been top notch, pushing very hard every day - that tells me he is young in age but mature in his head," Valakari said. Both Kirk and his Finnish manager will hope that hard work pays off as the Perth side seek a quarter-final spot.
