Major League Baseball Invests In Professional Women's Softball, AUSL
Major League Baseball (MLB) announced on May 29 that they have partnered and invested in Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL). MLB has already shown support of the sport of softball at large with their involvement and association with USA Softball and support of the Women's National Team, more recently as an Official
Sponsor of the NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association), and through MLB's youth initiatives such as PLAY BALL, the Nike RBI program.
However, this investment into AUSL is monumental as professional softball in the US has historically struggled due to its underdevelopment and lack of true investment from owners and outside stakeholders. Former leagues in the Women's Pro Softball League (WPSL, 1997-2001), National Pro Fastpitch (NPF, 2004-2021) folded due to lack of revenue and financial backing.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred Jr said about the partnership, "As a part of our broader commitment to growing softball and creating more opportunities for women and girls in sports, this agreement reflects our confidence in Kim Ng's leadership, the AUSL vision, and the incredible talent of its athletes. During this extraordinarily
exciting time for women's sports, we want softball to thrive. MLB is committed to help build a sustainable and impactful league that drives fandom, serves the softball community, and benefits all female athletes.'
AUSL Commissioner Kim Ng, former Marlins General Manager and MLB executive who recently was announced as the first commissioner of AUSL, also mirrored the excitement of the partnership, 'This is a watershed moment for women's sports and especially for softball. MLB's investment will supercharge our efforts to build the sustainable professional league this sport has long deserved, and sends a powerful message about the value of female athletes and the importance of creating professional opportunities for them."
Although the MLB has not released the monetary investment amount, they have detailed that the partnership includes assisting the league with growth and operation cost, airing AUSL games and highlights on MLB TV and MLB Network, shared marketing efforts including social media marketing, collaborative events including AUSL players taking part at marquee MLB events such as the All-Star Game, Home Run Derby X, and the MLB postseason.
Additionally, MLB's premiere show MLB Tonight: National Pregame will be
on-site in Rosemont, Illinois on Friday, June 6 and Saturday, June 7 to cover Opening Weekend where AUSL's four teams – the Bandits, Blaze, Talons and Volts will compete.
AUSL will play 24 games between June 7 -July 23 and the top two teams will compete in a best-of-three championship series July 26-28 at the University of Alabama's softball stadium, a homecoming for AUSL star and former Alabama standout pitcher Montana Fouts if her team makes the series.

‘Ballerina' Reviews: Are Critics In Step With ‘John Wick' Spinoff?
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina — starring Ana de Arma and featuring Keanu Reeves — has some, but not all, critics jumping for joy. Rated R, Ballerina plays in Thursday previews and opens in 3,400 North American theaters on Friday. The logline for Ballerina reads, 'Taking place during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the film follows Eve Macarro (Armas) who is beginning her training in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma.' Directed by Len Wiseman, Ballerina also stars features John Wick franchise stars Reeves, Anjelica Huston, Ian McShane and the late Lance Reddick in supporting roles. Ballerina also stars Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno and Norman Reedus. The review embargo for Ballerina lifted Wednesday afternoon and the film is getting a mostly positive reception from Rotten Tomatoes critics with a 75% rating based on 55 reviews as of the publication of this article. The rating, of course, could change as more reviews roll in the throughout the week and over the weekend. The RT Critics Consensus and Popcornmeter rating are still pending. David Ehrlich of IndieWire is among the top critics on RT who gives From the World of John Wick: Ballerina a 'fresh' review, writing, 'The good news is that Ballerina has another place it wants to show us, and that place turns out to be a wonderful addition to this franchise's ever-swelling cinematic universe.' David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter also thinks Ballerina takes a step in the right direction, noting in his review summary on RT, "[Ana] de Armas is a magnetic presence with all the right moves, and [Len] Wiseman's muscular direction make for mindless summer action entertainment with a lot of style." Also praising Ballerina is Gregory Nussen of Deadline Hollywood Daily, who writes in his RT summary, '[Ana] de Armas is a huge reason why this all works; her presence is beguiling, and her movement is immaculate. So, too, is Jason Ballantine's editing job.' Among Ballerina's detractors on RT is Liz Shannon Miller of Consequence, who writes in her 'rotten' review, "As a vehicle to add more lore and nuance to the JWCU — while also delivering numerous fun action sequences — Ballerina functions well. Unfortunately, it fails to give its star a real character to play, or a substantial plotline." Tim Grierson of Screen International is another top critic on RT who gives Ballerina a 'rotten' review, writing, 'Ballerina isn't sharp enough to deserve [Ana] de Armas's killer performance.' From the World of John Wick: Ballerina — plays in Thursday previews and opens in wide release in theaters on Friday.

New Jersey's Stockton University prepares to host soccer players ahead of FIFA Club World Cup
This New Jersey university is preparing to host a Brazilian soccer team ahead of FIFA Club World Cup This New Jersey university is preparing to host a Brazilian soccer team ahead of FIFA Club World Cup This New Jersey university is preparing to host a Brazilian soccer team ahead of FIFA Club World Cup Some of the best soccer players in the world will soon arrive in New Jersey. Lincoln Financial Field will host matches for the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in Philadelphia, but Stockton University has also been selected as a training site. Focusing on straight lines and overlapping passes, the grounds team at the school in Galloway Township is mowing the soccer field with precision. Crews are working around the clock after FIFA announced CR Flamengo from Brazil will be the team spending roughly two weeks training in South Jersey. "CR Flamengo is one of the most popular teams in the world with over 57 million followers," said Jeff Haines, the associate director of athletics and recreation at Stockton. "The university realizes how big of a deal this is, not just from a local soccer standpoint, but a global standpoint that puts Stockton on the map." Fresh lines were painted on the soccer field on Tuesday, and FIFA shipped new goals ahead of the practice sessions. The university's athletic director, Tony Berich, said representatives from Brazil visited the campus in December, and one of the selling points was the Bermuda grass inside G. Larry James Stadium. "I don't know if we would have this opportunity if we didn't have this field, I don't think we would have even been considered," Berich said. Stockton's field was grown at Tuckahoe Turf Farms in Hammonton, the same farm working with FIFA and Lincoln Financial Field, so it will be a smooth transition for CR Flamengo. Tuckahoe Turf Farms CBS News Philadelphia All of the practices on Stockton's campus will be closed to the public. The university installed temporary fencing around the stadium to keep the players and the field more secure. "We do have experience in hosting big events and soccer teams, this is another big exciting event that we're really looking forward to," Haines said. In 1994, Stockton hosted Saudi Arabia's team ahead of the World Cup. "We were also fortunate enough to host Nigeria in 1996 for their Olympic training camp as well. Nigeria went on to win the gold medal," Haines said. Now, Stockton is preparing for CR Flamengo's arrival on June 12, and the team will train in Galloway Township through June 23. Officials say the field and facilities will be ready. "This is the one chance that we have to be associated with … a worldwide event like this," Berich said.
