Kolkata Gang Rape Accused To Be Produced In Court Today, Cops May Seek Extension Of Custody
Though the accused continue to deny allegations, police sources say that the evidence and witness statements collected so far substantiate the victim's complaint
The four accused in the South Calcutta Law College gang rape case will be produced in court on Tuesday and police are likely to seek an extension of their custody.
The Commissioner of Police visited Kasba Police Station on Monday to review the progress of the investigation in the case that has once again brought the spotlight on crimes against women in the city. The commissioner held a two-hour meeting with officers of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and issued detailed guidelines on how the investigation should proceed, sources told CNN-News18.
The development comes after the 24-year-old law student accused three people— alumnus Monojit Mishra and current students Pratim Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed—of sexually assaulting her in the college security guard's room on June 25. The fourth accused, the security guard, was taken into custody on Saturday. The college has been closed indefinitely for now.
So far, the survivor has been taken to the scene of the crime, where she described the events of that day. Her statement has also been recorded before a magistrate under Section 164 and she has undergone medical examination twice. The clothes worn by both the accused and the survivor on the day of the incident have been collected as evidence.
Police sources say the woman's complaint is being substantiated by the evidence collected so far. In her complaint, the survivor alleged that the prime accused filmed her and blackmailed her with the video. The accused's mobile phone has been recovered, and it contains the video, corroborating her allegations.
Additionally, CCTV footage from June 25 clearly shows that the woman was prevented from leaving the premises. Police sources also say that the survivor had written in her complaint that she had asked for an inhaler as she was feeling breathless. Investigation has confirmed this after police spoke to the medical shop owner.
Police have started questioning students who were present in college that day. Though the accused continue to deny allegations, police sources say that the evidence and witness statements collected so far substantiate the victim's complaint.

Belthangady MLA seeks police action against those spreading false information
Harish Poonja, MLA for Belthangady, has asked police to take action against those spreading false information about the ongoing probe into the alleged burials of several bodies near Dharmasthala. Talking to reporters on Saturday, Mr. Poonja said that so far he has not issued a statement on this matter related to his Assembly constituency in order to avoid any disturbance to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe. The SIT has not divulged any official information regarding the probe, and it has not submitted any interim report to the State government yet. However, the false information being spread about the investigation has been disturbing peace in the society, he said. The police should bookcases suo motu against the false statements being issued about the investigation, both those supporting and those against the probe. Unfortunately, the police have not yet taken effective action against those spreading false information in the matter, he said and urged the State government to take action to maintain law and order in the region. The MLA said around 10 Hindu activists and BJP workers have been named in connection with the group clash at Pangala, in Dharmasthala, on August 6, following the assault of three YouTubers and a cameraman. Claiming that these activists were innocent and the police booked them under pressure from the left parties and SDPI, the MLA urged the police to take rightful action and not create mistrust among people. Hindu activists and BJP workers should not be unnecessarily targeted, he said.

MLA Harish Poonja accuses police of targeting BJP, Hindu activists in Dharmasthala
MANGALURU: Belthangady MLA Harish Poonja accused the police of targeting BJP and Hindu activists in Dharmasthala, in the name of maintaining law and order. The BJP MLA told reporters that he did not issue statements on the alleged Dharmasthala mass burial case since the SIT investigation was in progress. "During a conflict reported in Dharmasthala recently, I found a failure on the part of the police in maintaining law and order. The police department has the responsibility of booking suo motu cases if they find a law and order issue. However, the police are not registering suo motu cases in the general interest of the public and keeping in mind the harmony in society. They have been booking cases against Hindu activists and BJP workers unnecessarily," the MLA alleged, adding that cases were booked against many BJP and Hindu activists without any reason. He said the BJP will oppose if innocents, especially BJP workers and Hindu activists, are framed through conspiracy. "The BJP will not remain silent if the police target party workers and Hindu activists on the basis of complaints from left organisations and SDPI. I have faith in the Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police that he would put his efforts into maintaining law and order. I also condemn the mentality of Left parties and the SDPI who are tarnishing the image of Hindu religious centres," the MLA said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dhaka:You won't believe the prices of sofas at the clearance furniture store! Congress, BRS scratching each other's backs: MoS Bandi Sanjay
KARIMNAGAR: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Saturday accused both the ruling Congress and the Opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS of working hand in glove over the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) and the phone-tapping case. Sanjay alleged that the two parties had a quid pro quo arrangement to shield each other from corruption and mislead the public. Reacting to BRS working president KTR's warning of legal action if he failed to withdraw his remarks, Sanjay stated, 'Name any temple, I will come there with my family. Will you also come with your wife, children, and parents? Will you make them swear that you have no connection with phone-tapping? I, along with my family, will swear that you did. If you don't believe in temples, we can go to a mosque or a church. Are you ready for such an oath?' he asked. Sanjay also said the SIT was not competent to issue notices to judges and demanded that the phone-tapping case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and ED, alleging it involved extortion. Responding to criticism from both BRS and Congress on whether he distrusted the SIT, he clarified that he trusted the agency but not the Congress-led state government. He accused the government of probing multiple scams but failing to act on them.
