Maybank president and group CEO Datuk Khairussaleh Ramli
KUALA LUMPUR: Maybank is underwriting RM2.5bil, which is one-third and the largest share of the biggest syndicated Islamic financing for data centres in Asia Pacific, to support DayOne Data Centers Singapore Pte Ltd's green data centres in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).
In a statement, Maybank said this onshore Ringgit Islamic tranche amounts to RM7.5bil, and an equivalent US dollar-denominated offshore conventional tranche, forming a five-year, dual-currency green financing package totalling RM15bil.
The borrower, WG Data Hub Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of DayOne, shall use the proceeds to develop Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold-certified data centres. LEED is an internationally recognised and globally utilised green building certification system.
Headquartered in Singapore, DayOne is a global leader in digital infrastructure, with a growing footprint across tier-one and emerging markets, including Singapore, Johor (Malaysia), Batam (Indonesia), Greater Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and beyond.
'This landmark transaction represents Maybank's largest Islamic financing commitment to the data centre sector. It highlights our unique position and global leadership in structuring and promoting Islamic and green finance,' president and group CEO Datuk Khairussaleh Ramli said.
'As the only homegrown ASEAN bank with a presence in all 10 key markets, Maybank's regional footprint and insights give us a distinct edge in supporting clients entering the JS-SEZ. This is backed by establishing a dedicated JS-SEZ Desk, and commitment to position the zone as a vibrant regional hub.'

Johor reaps success as agri giant
JOHOR BARU: Johor contributed the highest value of agricultural output nationwide, with sales reaching RM27.2bil last year, says a state executive councillor. Johor agriculture, agro-based industry and rural development committee chairman Datuk Zahari Sarip (pic) said the figure was based on the 2024 Agriculture Census presented by the Statistics Department. He said the data was shared during the National Agriculture Exco meeting, which was chaired by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu in Putrajaya recently. 'The meeting served as an important platform to align key policies and proposals to advance the agricultural and agri-food sector across the country,' he said in a statement yesterday. The Buloh Kasap assemblyman said Johor's strong performance reaffirmed its position as a national agriculture powerhouse and a critical contributor to food production and food security in Malaysia. Zahari also said the state government would remain committed to ensuring that the agriculture sector continues to grow. He added that Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has repeatedly stressed the need for continuous efforts to boost the sector as a key part of the state's development plan. 'As part of the Johor Budget 2026, we will focus on empowering the target groups involved, such as farmers, livestock breeders, fishermen and agri-entrepreneurs,' he said. Zahari also said that during the meeting, he had raised the importance of food security within the broader framework of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) development. Zahari said food security was a key focus area under the JS-SEZ initiative, adding that efforts would include promoting high-tech agricultural practices. 'Our goal is to scale up the production of quality and competitive agri-food products by embracing innovation and sustainable methods,' he said. In recognition of Johor's role, Zahari said the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry has approved a special allocation of RM23.4mil for the state. 'The funds will be used to implement 20 programmes and agricultural projects throughout 2025, with the aim of accelerating development and improving farmers' livelihoods. 'The state government is grateful for the support and will ensure the effective and smooth implementation of all initiatives under this collaboration,' he said. Zahari also said that he had called for improvements in disaster assistance management, especially for farmers, breeders and fishermen affected by floods and other natural disasters during the meeting. He said that faster aid delivery would enable them to resume affected projects quickly and safeguard their income sources and output capacity. 'The state government will continue giving its full commitment to elevating the agriculture sector in line with the Maju Johor agenda,' he added.

Maal Hijrah: Azmar Talib Honoured For Championing Islamic Economy In Melaka
MELAKA, June 27 (Bernama) -- A strong passion for economics and real estate, along with years of trusted service, has earned Datuk Azmar Talib the Melaka Tokoh Maal Hijrah 2025 award. The 65-year-old from Masjid Tanah received the Abu Bakar As-Siddiq Award in recognition of his contributions to Islamic economic development and efforts to modernise waqf and zakat management in the state. Azmar said he still has several ideas to help improve the economy of Muslims in Melaka, especially the asnaf group. 'Waqf (endowment made by Muslims for charitable or religious purposes) properties must be developed and managed efficiently to benefit the community and this is what I'm working on with JAIM and Tabung Haji,' he said after receiving the award during the state Maal Hijrah celebration at Masjid Al-Hakeem, Kampung Tehel here last night. The ceremony, officiated by Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, was attended by state leaders and over 3,000 people. Azmar, who once served as CEO of TRX City Sdn Bhd, hopes more Muslims will go into business, following the Sunnah of the Prophet in building a strong economy. He said his current roles in the Melaka Islamic Religious Council (MAIM) and the State Economic Action Council (MTENM) allow him to help strengthen both the state's economy and Islamic affairs. 'We are still economically behind and often rely on aid because many of us work for others. I believe zakat and waqf assets should be better utilised through investments, and the returns can help Muslims start businesses,' he said. Azmar was one of 12 recipients of the Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M awards.

Data centres to drive demand for industrial property
RHB Research said interest in industrial property would also be driven by the prolonged US-China trade war. PETALING JAYA: Foreign interest in data centre investments in Malaysia remains strong, which will result in industrial property continuing to be a major investment theme, says RHB Research. The research house said interest in industrial property would also be driven by the prolonged US-China trade war. 'The performance of the property sector has been rather flat in the first two months of this year, given the market volatility arising from global concerns over US trade policies and the more recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. 'However, the fundamental demand for property has not changed significantly, in our view. 'The prolonged US-China trade war should continue to encourage investments into South-East Asia, and DayOne Data Centers Singapore Pte Ltd recently secured RM15bilin new debt funding for its data centre operations in Malaysia. This indicates the industrial segment should continue to drive the growth of the sector,' the research house added. Headquartered in Singapore, DayOne is a global leader in digital infrastructure, with a growing footprint across tier-one and emerging markets, including Singapore, Johor, Batam in Indonesia, Greater Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo and beyond. The research house said it also expects the impact of the expanded sales and service tax (SST) to be manageable for the property segment. 'The exemption of the SST for serviced apartments built on commercial titles is a relief for industry players. The government recently clarified that this segment is now exempted from the SST, as long as the units are intended for residential use and fall under the purview of the Housing Development Act. 'In addition, essential construction materials such as cement, aggregate and sand are still subjected to a 0% tax. As such, only part of the construction component will be subject to the 6% tax, and this will only affect the industrial and commercial property segments,' RHB Research added.
