Guwahati bypass to get 5 foot overbridges by July next year
2
Guwahati: Prioritising pedestrian convenience, five new foot overbridges with escalators will soon be constructed at key junctions along the Guwahati Bypass of NH-27, ensuring safer crossings.
The initiative by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) follows the 2023 expansion of the bypass, which led to increased difficulty for pedestrians.
Project implementation unit director Biswa Jyoti Lahkar said construction will begin soon at a cost of Rs 30 crore, with a target completion date of July next year. He said these foot overbridges at five critical intersections — on the now six-lane NH-27 Guwahati Bypass — will allow pedestrians to cross safely and efficiently.
NHAI also plans to upgrade the service lanes of the bypass and install streetlights along the 18-km stretch from Khanapara to Jalukbari. Dedicated bus bays are in the works to streamline public transport operations and reduce unsafe stoppages.
Lahkar added that with enhanced service roads, improved drainage, street lighting, and clear signage, the bypass — vital for both local and interstate traffic — will meet modern highway safety standards.

NHAI has already constructed four major flyovers at Basistha, Lokhra, Garchuk, and Boragaon, along with two vehicular underpasses at Beharbari and Jayanagar. These upgrades have helped decongest key intersections and improve traffic flow.
The project director expects that the construction of the foot overbridges, along with the already constructed flyovers, ahead of the construction of the ambitious 121-km-long over Rs 5,000 crore Guwahati ring road, will enhance smooth road travel.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the ring road project on Sept 8, during his visit to the state for the birth centenary celebrations of music legend Bhupen Hazarika.
The ring road initiative includes building a major bypass, widening critical sections of NH-27, and constructing a significant bridge over the Brahmaputra river connecting Narengi in Guwahati to Kuruwa in Darrang district. The projected is expected to be completed by Dec 2027.

Software engineer dies in Ghodbunder accident; parents awarded Rs 49.46 lakh compensation by Tribunal
Representative image THANE: The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT), Thane, awarded a compensation of ₹49.46 lakh to the elderly parents of a 25-year-old IT engineer who died in a tragic road accident on Ghodbunder Road in January 2019. The incident occurred near the Hide Park bus stop when the victim, a resident of Thane, was riding his motorcycle and attempted to overtake a state transport bus. He lost control and collided with the bus, after which a truck coming from behind ran over him, causing fatal head injuries. The tribunal observed that while the young man failed to maintain proper distance while overtaking, the truck driver's rash and excessive speed was primarily responsible for the fatality. The tribunal exonerated the bus driver of any negligence. The deceased was a software engineer earning ₹30,000 per month and was the sole earning member of his family. His father, aged 56, and mother, aged 55, filed the claim under Section 166 of the Motor Vehicles Act, citing both emotional and financial loss. MACT member R.V. Mohite, in a detailed judgment, held the truck driver 75% liable and calculated compensation based on the victim's income, age, and future prospects. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo The tribunal noted that the truck driver failed to control the vehicle and did not maintain a safe distance, leading to the accident. Civic body working on erasing black spots from city's surface
Ludhiana: The municipal corporation is gearing up to rectify the black spots, twelve identified so far, within the city limits to prevent accidents and deaths. It is working on the proposal at the moment, which will be put forth before the finance and contracts committee. If the F&CC gives its go-ahead, the civic body will set aside Rs 5 crore for the purpose. In fact, well-placed sources said MC has already started making minor changes in road infrastructure, such as footpaths, roundabouts, and side berms, to avoid major incidents. MC chief Aaditya Dachalwal said, "The plan is still being finalised. We are hoping to get the F&CC's approval, after which the process of floating tenders and inviting bids will commence." Recently, the civic body got a 3D digital survey done as part of smart road asset management, in which the 12 accident-prone spots falling under its jurisdiction were identified. These spots also underwent complete road safety audits, following which detailed engineering designs are being made to reduce crash risk and improve commuter safety. The MC surveyed roads spanning a length of more than 50km, including Old GT Road (Sherpur to Jalandhar bypass via Jagraon bridge); Jagraon bridge to Ferozepur Road Octroi; Lakkar bridge to Hambran Road Octroi; Samrala Chowk to Bharat Nagar Chowk; Samrala Chowk to Chandigarh Road Octroi; Atam Park T-point to 200 Feet road; Bhai Bala Chowk to Phullanwal Chowk (Pakhowal road); Vishwakarma Chowk to GNDEC (Gill Road); Rahon Road and Tajpur Road. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Seniors Are Snapping Up This TV Box, We Explain!
