Sam Darnold plays one series, completes all four passes
The quarterback, who signed with the Seahawks in the offseason, did not throw the ball down the field with air yards of minus-5, minus-1, 1 and 4 yards on his four attempts. But he was perfect.
Darnold went 4-for-4 for 34 yards, connecting with four different receivers. Fullback Robbie Ouzis caught one for 13 yards, tight end Elijah Arroyo one for 9, wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba one for 7 and tight end AJ Barner one for 5.
Zach Charbonnet ran for 45 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown, on five carries on the 81-yard drive that gave the Seahawks a 7-0 lead over the Chiefs.
The Seahawks faced only one third down and sent rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe out for the quarterback sneak with Darnold lined up at running back. Milroe gained 2 yards.
Drew Lock replaced Darnold on the second possession.
Darnold did not play in the preseason opener.

Robinson's mix of size and power would complement McCaffrey – a more elusive runner – well. Commanders general manager Adam Peters also used to work in the 49ers' front office, so perhaps that could help get a deal done. Dallas Cowboys The Cowboys are projected to rely on a committee of Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders at running back early in the season. The two combined for 718 yards and six touchdowns on 194 carries last season; by comparison, Robinson totaled 799 yards and eight touchdowns himself on 187 carries. As such, Robinson would represent a big upgrade for the Cowboys. But would Washington be willing to trade one of its leading rushers to a divisional rival? Pacheco might bounce back as he gets further removed from a broken leg, but adding Robinson as insurance wouldn't be a bad move for the Chiefs. Robinson's hard-nosed running style would fit the mold the Chiefs have sought in running backs in recent seasons. He's also bigger than both Pacheco and Hunt and could help keep the more explosive Pacheco fresh as part of a rotation. Football nerd: Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald blends tradition and innovation
Last year, Mike Macdonald became the first head coach in Seahawks history to reach 10 wins in his first season. The 2025 campaign kicks off next month. (GeekWire Photo / Taylor Soper) It's about 10 minutes into my interview with Mike Macdonald, and I get the sense that the Seattle Seahawks head coach is a little geeky. 'Geek is a compliment,' he said. 'I've been called a football nerd.' Macdonald, 38, became the NFL's youngest head coach when he joined the Seahawks last year. He was also a straight-A student in high school and graduated summa cum laude with a finance degree from University of Georgia. So it's not a big surprise that Macdonald embraces innovative tools and strategies. In an interview with GeekWire earlier this year at Lumen Field, Macdonald described his approach as a hybrid of traditional football fundamentals and modern technology. 'We have a philosophy in Seattle: old school principles, new school methods,' he said. 'We're going to build on a strong foundation, but whatever we can do to give us an edge — we're going to get after it.' Thanks to advanced tracking and analytics, NFL teams have more data than ever — and it's changing how the game is played. One clear example: how coaches approach fourth down decisions. 'We have a way to measure the advantage you get for going for it on fourth down,' Macdonald said. 'Every team has that.' That data can shift play-calling not just on fourth down but throughout an entire drive, Macdonald said. Macdonald doesn't see analytics and instinct as mutually exclusive — instead, he views data as a decision-making tool to support what coaches already know from film, practice, and experience. 'It's a constant balance,' he said.
