French President Macron and wife file defamation suit against Candace Owens

Yahoo3 days ago
French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, on Wednesday filed a defamation lawsuit against American conservative commentator Candace Owens over the "outlandish, defamatory, and far-fetched fictions" she's pushed online, including her claim that Brigitte was born a man.
Owens, according to the complaint, used this false statement "to promote her independent platform, gain notoriety, and make money."
"Ms. Owens' campaign of defamation was plainly designed to harass and cause pain to us and our families and to garner attention and notoriety. We gave her every opportunity to back away from these claims, but she refused," the Macrons said in a statement. "It is our earnest hope that this lawsuit will set the record straight and end this campaign of defamation once and for all."

The complaint, filed in Delaware Superior Court, spans over 200 pages and includes 22 counts of defamation, false light, and defamation by implication. The Macrons are seeking damages, though no amount is included.
The complaint cites a host of claims Owens has made about the Macrons, including that the two are secretly 'blood relatives.'
"These claims are demonstrably false, and Owens knew they were false when she published them," the complaint states. "Yet, she published them anyway. And the reason is clear: it is not the pursuit of truth, but the pursuit of fame."
In a statement, a spokesperson for Owens said Owens "is not shutting up" and that the lawsuit amounts to a "foreign government attacking the First Amendment rights of an American independent journalist."
"Candace repeatedly requested an interview with Brigitte Macron," the statement said. "Instead of offering a comment, Brigitte is resorting to trying to bully a reporter into submission. In France, politicians can bully journalists, but this is not France. It's America."
The complaint says that Owens' claims have caused "tremendous damage" to the Macrons, and have "subjected the Macrons to a campaign of global humiliation, turning their lives into fodder for profit-driven lies."
"The result is relentless bullying on a worldwide scale," the complaint says. "Every time the Macrons leave their home, they do so knowing that countless people have heard, and many believe, these vile fabrications. It is invasive, dehumanizing, and deeply unjust."
A press release accompanying the Macrons' complaint says the Marcons sent Owens three retraction demands prior to filing their suit.
"If ever there was a clear-cut case of defamation, this is it," Tom Clare, an attorney for the Macrons, said in a statement. "Relying on discredited falsehoods originally presented by a self-proclaimed spiritual medium and so-called investigative journalist, Ms. Owens both promoted and expanded on those falsehoods and invented new ones, all designed to cause maximum harm to the Macrons and maximize attention and financial gain for herself."

Bill O'Reilly Predicts Stephen Colbert ‘Won't Last ‘Til May,' Foresees Shakeup at ‘The View': ‘She's Gone'

The 'No Spin News' host also says the 'Late Show' host "censored" the guest list – "unless you hate Trump" Bill O'Reilly says for years Stephen Colbert 'censored' his guest list to Trump-haters only, part of a broader bias at CBS, which wouldn't book the bestselling author because of his conservative politics – not that any of it matters now. The 'No Spin News' host said in separate segments this week that Colbert won't last until May, as new, 'more conservative' ownership begins to grab hold. But O'Reilly said the pictures is much bigger than Skydance, whose impending Paramount takeover is part of a broader sweep through corporate media that he predicted would also lead to a big shakeup on ABC's 'The View.' He's through,' the former Fox News host said. 'They say his show will be on till May. It won't. … What sunk him was not just his vitriolic approach to Trump. He censored his program. You could not get on his program unless you hated Trump.' O'Reilly said he'd logged 75 late-night appearances over the years – including with David Letterman, Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel – but that Colbert wouldn't have him. 'I did actually appear with Colbert way, way back one time,' O'Reilly noted. 'But Colbert would never invite anybody who didn't hate Trump.' That went broadly for CBS, O'Reilly said – despite that he's sold millions of books with several No. 1 debuts for historical nonfiction titles like 'Killing Lincoln' and 'Killing Kennedy,' he just couldn't get booked on the network. '[Jane] Pauley wouldn't put us on, and I emailed her directly,' O'Reilly said. 'Didn't even consider it.' In a separate segment, O'Reilly said all four networks – CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox – are changing dramatically because of Trump, predicting a major shakeup at 'The View.' 'Joy Behar is a hater,' he said of the 'View' panelist. 'No doubt about it. And she's going — by the way, not going to be around much longer. And this [Anna] Navarro woman, she's going, too. Disney's going to have to revamp that whole thing.' Watch both segments in the videos above. Man found inside Senate Chamber Friday, again Saturday; investigation underway

An investigation is underway after capitol security found a man inside the Minnesota Senate chamber late Friday night even though the building was closed to the public, according to an email obtained by WCCO News sent to senators and staff. Around 11:30 p.m. Friday, "an individual experiencing mental health concerns was discovered inside the Senate Chamber. The individual made statements indicating he was the governor, among other remarks, and was found disrobed," Sven Lindquist, chief sergeant at arms for the chamber, wrote in an email sent Saturday afternoon. He said capitol security "responded promptly" and the person was sent to nearby Regions Hospital for evaluation" but was later deemed "non-threatening to himself or others" and was released. But he returned to the capitol grounds Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m., Lindquist explained. WCCO News reached out to the Minnesota State Patrol, which oversees capitol security, for comment but messages have not been returned. It's unclear how the man got into the capitol building and inside the Senate Chamber after-hours. The email said officials are investigating, and that the individual has a probation violation warrant on record in Wisconsin, though it "did not initially authorize a custodial transfer." The warrant has since been updated, and "appropriate measures will be taken upon next contact," Lindquist said. The incident comes a month after Rep. Melissa Hortman, the House DFL leader, and her husband Mark were shot and killed in an attack at their homes, which authorities say was a political assassination by a masked gunman impersonating a police officer. DFL Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were also shot and wounded and investigators say the accused assassin had a hitlist with other Democratic officials' names on it. "We are examining all aspects of the incident to address any security concerns," Lindquist told senators and chamber staff in the email. "I want to reiterate that the safety and security of all individuals within the capitol remain the top priority for Capitol Security and the Sergeants at Arms for both the House and Senate." The June 14 attacks are putting a spotlight on concerns about safety for elected officials and security at the capitol, where there are no metal detectors or other screening before the public can enter. The capitol building closes at night. Senate Republican Leader Mark Johnson, R-East Grand Forks, in a statement said he was "disappointed" in the security breach. "We are living in a heightened threat environment," Johnson said. "I expect the State Patrol and Capitol Security teams will thoroughly review what happened and give Capitol officials and staff, and the public, their assurances that this will not happen again." House Speaker Lisa Demuth, R-Cold Spring, said in a statement that anyone who trespasses at the state capitol should be arrested and prosecuted for breaking the law. "I look forward to learning why this did not take place in this highly disturbing incident," Demuth said. DFL leadership in both chambers has not yet commented on what happened. In wake of the lawmaker shootings, the Minnesota House and Senate will assist in paying for home security upgrades for their members with state funds through their existing chamber budgets. Before the change, lawmakers could only draw from campaign funds for such measures or out of their own pockets. Earlier this month, the top law enforcement official in Ramsey County urged lawmakers to consider additional security measures at the state capitol amid what he called "a troubling increase in the use of political violence, threats and intimidation." In a letter addressed to Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, Sheriff Bob Fletcher said "recent heartbreaking events highlight the urgent need to reexamine security measures within the Capitol Complex."
