Punjab: ‘Nothing wrong has happened': Takht head granthi backs Mehron's act
The Akal Takht Sahib's head granthi, Giani Malkit Singh, on Monday justified the recent murder of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, also known as 'Kamal Kaur Bhabhi', stating that the act was 'appropriate' in light of her alleged role in promoting obscenity.
'We should not listen to vulgar songs... This kind of treatment should be meted out to those who indulge in spreading vulgarity and defaming Sikh community. Nothing wrong has happened. This has happened earlier as well,' he told reporters.
The Takht head granthi is the second highest position after the jathedar. While jathedar focuses on the issues concerning the entire community, head granthi looks after 'maryada' and daily routine rituals and ceremonies held at the highest Sikh temporal seat.
Kumari's body was found inside a car in the parking area of Adesh University in Bathinda on June 11. According to police, Kanchan, a resident of Lachman colony in Ludhiana, was strangled to death. Two suspects, Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh, have been arrested while the main accused, Amritpal Singh Mehron, is reported to have fled to the UAE, as per police.
Bhatinda senior superintendent of police Amneet Kondal said on Sunday that police had already issued a lookout circular against Mehron, a resident of Moga.
Mehron (30) is a self-styled Sikh radical leader who heads a radical organisation, 'Qaum De Rakhe'. He is also accused of issuing threats to at least two other Punjab-based women social media influencers. The police said they have also blocked some of his social media handles.
After the alleged murder, a video had surfaced on the internet where Mehron claimed that Kanchan was killed due to her 'immoral and vulgar content' on social media and two of his accomplices have been arrested in connection with the case. He also warned other influencers creating 'objectionable content' to refrain from such activities. Targeting another Punjab-based influencer, he said it is 'not necessary that a body will be found every time', as he indirectly referred to Kanchan's body being left in her car.
Meanwhile, Amritsar-based social media influencer Deepika Luthra was provided security by Punjab Police after she received similar threats from Mehron and others.

Bombay high court rejects discharge plea of teacher accused in Rs 295 crore SBI loan fraud case
MUMBAI: The Bombay high court rejected the discharge application of Kanchan Satpute, a Pune-based teacher and wife of the prime accused, Anil Satpute, in a money laundering case involving M/s Duplex Industries Ltd. The case, amounting to Rs 295 crore, was registered by the CBI ACB after it was argued that funds were allegedly routed to Kanchan's personal account or withdrawn in cash. The high court Judge, Madhav Jamdar, while rejecting Kanchan's discharge application, stated that there was enough material on record from witness statements and documentary evidence to proceed against her. The court upheld a Special CBI Judge's earlier order refusing to discharge her from the case. According to the CBI, her proprietorship concern, Nishad Audio Visuals, received approximately Rs 5.08 crore in diverted bank funds through a complex web of transactions involving other entities, including R.K. Robert Vadra to appear before ED today in arms dealer-linked money laundering case
Businessman Robert Vadra, who is also the husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, will appear before the Enforcement Directorate for questioning in a money laundering case linked to UK-based fugitive arms dealer, Sanjay 56, had skipped the earlier summons issued by the federal agency last Tuesday (June 10). The ED then issued a fresh summons to the businessman skipped the June 10 summons saying he had flu-like symptoms the previous day and had undertaken a Covid-19 test as per protocol, news agency PTI reported. His lawyer then said that the 56-year-old had no intention of avoiding the summons and was ready to appear before the ED anytime before or after his travel later this month. As part of his appearance before the probe agency today, Vadra is expected to record his statement on the case, which is being investigated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). It is understood that the ED will subsequently file a chargesheet in the case is part of a larger investigation into Bhandari, who fled India in 2016 soon after the IT Department raided him in Delhi, and is currently based in the UK. His lawyer had then said that Vadra had no intention of avoiding summons and was ready to appear before the ED anytime before or after his travel abroad later this month. The agency is understood to have summoned Vadra to record his statement under the PMLA and subsequently file a chargesheet in the case. The ED had questioned Vadra for three consecutive days in April in a separate money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in a 2008 land deal in Haryana. He is being investigated in three money laundering cases by the ED. Terming the charges a 'political witch hunt', Vadra said he was being 'hounded and harassed' to subserve political ends. Stampede case in Karnataka HC After receiving all relevant documents relating to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede incident, and requesting English translations for the same documents, the Karnataka HC is set to hear the matter on Tuesday. The stampede that occurred during the celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) 2025 IPL victory on June 3, had claimed 11 lives and injured over 50 people, prompting the HC to take cognisance on June 5. The court had issued a notice to the Karnataka government to investigate the cause and propose preventive measures. Meanwhile, the state's Opposition BJP is continuing its protest demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar, alleging that they were responsible for the stampede. When the demand was raised in 1990, the then Vice Chancellor of the University A Gnanam extended reservation of 25% of seats after due consideration with the University's Academic Council and the Executive committee extended the reservation in the courses available in the university in 1997. A reservation of 25% of seats was provided for eight courses in the beginning, which increased subsequently to 18 courses.
