Robin Roberts leaves ‘GMA' for ‘incredible journey' with wife

New York Post2 days ago
Robin Roberts is giving back.
The 'Good Morning America' anchor, 64, has been temporarily absent from the show's broadcast for good reason.
Instead of spending her days in the studio, Roberts took a trip with her wife, Amber Laign, to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The couple traveled to Kigali, Rwanda, to do some good.

'We're in #Rwanda as guests of @inmuwetrust_ & @giantsofafrica celebrating young basketball players across Africa,' the journalist captioned her Sunday Instagram post. 'Every last Saturday in the month in Rwanda is a national day of service.'
Roberts added, 'Wonderful way for the two of us to celebrate 20 years as a couple…it certainly has been an adventure! 💕#goafestival.'

The pair, who met on a blind date in 2005, officially tied the knot in 2023.
Laign, meanwhile, shared her own social media post about their recent adventure.
Alongside a video of the service group dancing and chanting, the former massage therapist wrote, '20 Years, 20 Countries, One Incredible Journey ❤️🌍.'
'Robin and I celebrated our 20-year anniversary in a way we'll never forget — in Rwanda, with Giants of Africa, surrounded by the energy, joy, and spirit of youth from 20 African countries,' Laign continued.
Their vacation solidified what is most important in this world.
'From dancing to community service that touched our hearts, this experience reminded us what truly matters: connection, purpose, and giving back. We're beyond grateful to have shared this milestone in such a powerful and uplifting way. Thank you, Giants of Africa, for letting us be part of something so meaningful,' she shared.

Roberts also posted a clip of her wife dancing, writing, 'No matter where we are in the world…she hears music and she's just gotta dance! Never a dull moment with this one.'
This trip to Rwanda was a long time coming for the spouses. Roberts and Laign first discussed their anniversary plans in June while speaking to People.
'We're [actually going] to Rwanda,' the reporter said. 'Because we wanted to celebrate that way, because our time together has been an adventure. And we thought what better way than to be with the gorillas … in Rwanda?'

Along with volunteering together, Laign revealed the other ways she keeps their 20-year relationship alive.
'We keep it fresh,' she quipped. 'You've got to keep it fresh, have our little date nights.'
Last month, Laign divulged another hack that keeps their romance in full swing.

'The true secret: separate apartments,' she confessed to E! News, adding, 'Communication, keeping it fresh, trust—all the good pillars.'
'Trust is very, very big,' Roberts added. 'We've had peaks and valleys—mainly majority peaks, but there have been some valleys.'
'Once we learned to not look at each other through the lens of our childhood, that was a real breakthrough for us,' she explained. 'It was a real understanding [of] having different paths to get here.'

Roberts also acknowledged their decades-long commitment, which is no small feat.
'I mean, 20 years,' she gushed. 'Something's got to be working.'
Laign lives in her home in Connecticut, while Roberts resides in her New York City apartment.
Roberts first mentioned their living arrangements in her 2014 memoir, 'Everybody's Got Something.'

She penned, 'Amber and I have been a loving couple for almost ten years now, but we choose not to live together. Maybe that's why we've lasted almost a decade!'
Despite having her own abode, Laign couldn't be happier with the partner she chose.
'15 years ago I met you for drinks on a blind date that both you and I tried to cancel…twice,' she shared in a 2020 Instagram anniversary post. 'Your grace caught my eye right away and the ease of the evening continued to flow through dinner.'

After that, there were no more cancellations to be had.
'We had a second date soon after and I couldn't believe how at ease I was with you as we shared each other's lives sipping lychee and apple martinis,' she continued. 'You left for Tahiti the following day and during that time apart I grew this feeling inside of me that still is very present today…butterflies.'
Years later, Roberts took the leap to make things official.
'I'm hesitating because I haven't said it out loud yet … I'm saying 'yes' to marriage,' she shared on 'GMA' in 2023. 'We're getting married this year.'
Referencing Laign's previous breast cancer battle, of which Roberts is a survivor too, she added, 'It was something we had talked about, but we had put it off. [Laign] became ill but … it is saying yes to that next chapter.'

New 'Old Skool' Vans shoes sell out, listed for hundreds on resale market

Vans' Premium Old Skool Shoe appears spraypainted with multicolored tweed detailing and Vans-themed pins for "bag-like embellishments." Squeaky clean sneakers may just be a thing of the past. Sold out in less than 24 hours, Vans' new sneaker features a pre-worn style with muddled coloring, tweed fringe detailing, and laces and soles that appear dirty – though they are brand new. The Premium Old Skool Shoe in Souvenir Warm Brown went live on the Vans website late July 30 and by the next day, the sneakers were already sold out. The Vans website, as of July 31, states that 118 people had purchased the sneakers. Originally $125, the limited-edition sneakers are now available for between $500 to $1,600 on eBay. Here's what we know about the Premium Old Skool Shoe and what Vans fans think about them. 'Y'all getting these???': Nike is releasing dirty Air Force 1s, social media is perplexed Vans Warped Tour: First few bands for 2025 comeback following hiatus What do the Old Skool 36 'Souvenir' Vans look like? The canvas of the low-top skate sneakers appears spraypainted with brown leather overlays. The sneakers feature multicolored tweed strip detailing and Vans-themed pins on the sides for "bag-like embellishment." The laces are a dark, off-white and the white soles appear dirty, though they are brand new. The sneakers appear to be inspired by Chanel's On the Pavement messenger bag, a part of the designer's Graffiti Collection, first introduced in 2014. The messenger bag, which is only available for high-dollar resale prices online, features the same spraypainted, muddled brown coloring, multicolored tweed detailing, vintage-style pins and overall distressed apperance. A version of the messenger bag is available on the Sotheby's website for $15,150. Vans brushed off comparisons in a statement to USA TODAY, saying the shoes were rooted in its creative branding. What are people saying? On Instagram, some of the comments on a vague Vans Instagram post promoting the sneaker's launch July 30, criticized the shoe's design. "I want 'em and get the reference. Very good creative direction, but take one step back and they do lowkey look like barf," one Instagram user commented on the Vans' post. Other creators and social media users are upset that the shoes were sold in such a limited run, with the sneakers going live on the Vans' website, and available in some retail stores, ahead of the date and time Vans promoted on social media – 9 a.m. ET on July 31. Back to school: Top shoe deals from Hoka, Rothy's, Nike and more Vans in its statement told USA TODAY that the official launch of the sneaker was July 31. The pre-worn trend Vans is certainly not the first brand to tap into the pre-worn style. Actually, Golden Goose is known for the trend, releasing its popular line of distressed sneakers in 2007, which continue to dominate the "pre-worn" market. Golden Goose's top-selling Super-Star sneaker, which sports a "dirty, scuffed" sole, is nearly $600. In 2021, New Balance released its "Protection Pack," a line of sneakers that appear to have torn fabric. Last year, Puma released a collaborative sneaker with A$AP Rocky called "Inhale Distressed." The $130 sneakers, now sold out, came in a grungy box and appeared covered in grease. And earlier this year, Nike released its Air Force 1 Low in "Dirty Triple White." The $130 sneakers appear dirty, creased and scuffed despite being brand new. Greta Cross is a national trending reporter at USA TODAY. Story idea? Email her at gcross@

Ice-T may be in need of an ice pack, or at least his TV counterpart Detective Fin does. The Grammy-winning rapper and actor, who stars as Odafin Tutuola on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," teased his return to the long-running crime drama in a playful Instagram post on July 31. Ice-T, who joined the iconic NBC series in 2000, shared a photo of his character sporting a gnarly black eye and cut lip. "Back filming SVU and the first scene I shoot…." Ice-T wrote in the post's caption, using an expletive before quickly reassuring fans, "It's in the script." Viewers won't have to wait long to see what crime-fighting adventures Det. Fin and the rest of the "SVU" gang, which includes show leads Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni, have been up to in the streets of New York City. Season 27 of "SVU" is expected to launch on Sept. 25 alongside the Season 25 premiere of flagship series "Law & Order," according to the official NBC website. New episodes will air on Thursdays and be available to stream on Peacock the following day. During an October 2024 interview with The Guardian, Ice-T, who initially made a name for himself in the rap scene of the late 1980s and early '90s, reflected on his unlikely "Law & Order" stint after appearing in crime dramas such as "New Jack City," "Mean Guns" and "Sonic Impact." "They called me to do four episodes, and it just kept on giving, 25 years later," Ice-T, 67, told the British outlet. "Hip-hop was doing this paradigm shift away from acts like me, Public Enemy and Ice Cube into this weird other world where I wouldn't have survived." He added, "So, maybe it was like a lifeboat pulling up next to me. Like, OK: Time for you to change your main hustle. It's been a good ride, and it keeps me contained — when you're a musician and only a musician, you got a lot of free time, and that free time can get you in trouble." Ice-T and Pink Floyd: Rapper says band gave rare approval for 'Comfortably Numb' sample Ice-T's black eye photo prompts playful concern on social media In the comments section, Ice-T's realistic "SVU" make-up for his character's injury had some of the rapper-actor's famous peers reaching for their own emergency alert. "I am glad it's just for SVU! ❤️" "Was getting ready to launch missiles..🫡," King T wrote, while Edwin Robinson II added, "I was about to send the prayer angels down… 😂😂😂"
