Bundee Aki reveals wife gave birth in car on same day as first Lions Test win
Aki was a second-half replacement in the first Test, coming off the bench after 57 minutes and all the while coping with the drama unfolding in Auckland. Aine is Aki's fifth child – all five have names beginning with A – and Aki's remarkable revelation details the sacrifices made by the touring side, who first got together for a training camp in Portugal in early June.
'I want to enjoy my break, my family time,' Aki said. 'I haven't seen my family for eight weeks. I have a newborn child who I haven't met yet. She was born when we were playing in Brisbane, so I haven't met her. Her name is Aine, so I'm looking forward to going and meeting my newborn child and we'll go from there.
'Credit to my wife [Kayla]. She's a powerful woman, a strong woman. I have to say it to her. If you only knew the story of what happened, it's a funny story in itself. It was a good day. I was in the hotel. I knew we were overdue. The missus calls me and she's like: 'Water hasn't broke but I'm going to the hospital, I'm feeling contractions.' I go: 'Yeah, fair enough.' She goes to the hospital, we're getting ready for the team meeting pre-match, and then she calls me and says she's on the way to the hospital, so I said: 'Fine, be safe.'
'Five minutes later, she sends a photo, her water broke. I was like: 'Cool, OK, are you almost there?' This is like 30 or 40 minutes away from the hospital, so I said: 'You'll be all right, Mum is there.' Ten minutes later, she video-calls me and I was like: 'Shit, what's going on?' I saw a baby on the video call, so she had it in the car on the way to the hospital. They're both strong and healthy, so happy days. I knew it was good juju so I knew we were going to have a good day.'
Aki went on to start the second and third Tests, struggling in appalling conditions on Saturday night in Sydney. After being part of the side that lost against South Africa four years ago, however, the 35-year-old was happy to settle for series success even if the targeted whitewash slipped by. 'We'll take the positive out of it,' he said.

'We won the series and that's all we got here for. We would have loved a clean sweep but it didn't happen. Only so many people can say they've been on two tours or have won a series.'

Giants score two in the ninth to surge past Pirates
August 6 - Dominic Smith's go-ahead RBI double in the ninth inning propelled the San Francisco Giants to a 4-2 victory over the host Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday afternoon. Smith's double followed a one-out double by Jung Hoo Lee off reliever Dennis Santana (3-4), and led to the Giants' second consecutive victory over the Pirates, who have lost four of their past six. Patrick Bailey had two hits, and his second drove in an insurance run in the ninth, scoring Smith from second. Randy Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his third save and second since the All-Star reliever transitioned to the closer role for San Francisco following the trade deadline. The Giants trailed 2-1 in the top of the eighth before loading the bases on a single by Bailey, a walk Isaac Mattson issued to Rafael Devers and a single by Willy Adames. Bailey then scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Chapman to tie the game. The Pirates lost for only the fourth time this season in 41 games in which they led after seven innings. San Francisco's comeback picked up starter Robbie Ray after a solid start in which he allowed two runs on six hits and two walks and struck out eight over six innings. Ryan Walker (4-4) struck out the side in the eighth inning, including an inning-ending strikeout of pinch hitter Oneil Cruz after Pittsburgh put runners on first and second. Nick Gonzales had three hits and an RBI and Andrew McCutchen had two hits to lead the Pirates. Gonzales' first hit drove in Liover Peguero with a single in the first inning to put Pittsburgh ahead 1-0. The Giants tied the game in the fifth when Jerar Encarnacion hit his second home run in as many games off Pirates starter Andrew Heaney, who went 4 2/3 innings, allowing that lone run and two hits. He had one strikeout and did not issue a walk. Pittsburgh took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Tommy Pham that scored Isiah Kiner-Falefa. --Field Level Media

Martin's changes pay off as Gassama double eases Rangers past Viktoria Plzen
Russell Martin's bold team selection paid off as Rangers defeated Viktoria Plzen 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie at Ibrox. Martin hit out at some of his squad following their deflating 1-1 draw at Motherwell on Saturday, questioning mentality, egos and application and the captain, James Tavernier, and the midfielder Nicolas Raskin were the biggest names among the expected changes. Martin got the required reaction as the winger Djeidi Gassama scored after 15 minutes before the returning striker Cyriel Dessers added a second from the spot just before the interval. Gassama, signed this summer from Sheffield Wednesday, scored his side's third in the 51st minute to put the Govan side into a commanding lead and eventually a comfortable win. Martin said: 'I really enjoyed it. I'm proud of the guys. We had a really difficult evening on Saturday, just because there was not enough running in behind, aggression, intensity with the ball. We were not just ranting and raving, we showed a lot of clips and we tried to do a lot of learning in the meeting room and on the pitch in the last couple of days and they took it on brilliantly. 'The guys that came in the team were fantastic. We're going to need everyone. You don't get dropped from this team, people come in and out quite a lot because we need to be fresh.' Martin claimed Tavernier was understanding of Martin's decision to leave him on the sidelines. He said: 'Yeah, yeah, he was great – all the guys. I say my piece, if they have a piece to say, then it's really respectful and really honest. But I think the way he played when he came on showed you everything you need to know. So there's been no problem and I don't envisage there being any problems moving forward.' Rangers will be heavy favourites to progress to a playoff tie against the Austrian side RB Salzburg or Club Brugge of Belgium. After pointing the finger at his underperformers at the weekend, all eyes were on Martin's team selection and he made significant changes. Along with Tavernier and Raskin – arguably their best player last season – Danilo and Kieran Dowell were left out. Oliver Antman, the Finland winger who joined from Go Ahead Eagles on Monday, made his debut with the left-back Jefté, the midfielder Lyall Cameron and Dessers returning while John Souttar was named captain. The Ibrox crowd was more subdued than usual on a big European night, initially. In the seventh minute Plzen's lofty striker Rafiu Durosinmi headed a cross from Amar Memic past the post but it was Gassama who struck first, playing a one-two with Dessers at the edge of the visitors' box before confidently curling the ball past the goalkeeper Florian Wiegele. After the Rangers defender Nasser Djiga brilliantly blocked a goal-bound shot from the visiting captain ,Matej Vydra, Antman's drive from a Gassama cut-back at the other end was cleared off the line by Vaclav Jemelka. When a driving run into the box by Antman ended with him being barged over by Vydra, Turpin pointed to the spot for a soft penalty and Dessers sent Wiegele the wrong way. Rangers started the second half strongly and within three minutes the midfielder Mohamed Diomande struck the bar with an effort from the edge of the box. However, the third soon arrived as Gassama grabbed his second when he bulleted in a header from a pinpoint Antman cross from the right to score his fourth goal in the past three European matches. Raskin, Danilo, and Tavernier all came off the bench when the job was done before the home keeper Jack Butland made a good save from a powerful drive from Memic. Malmö's home match against their local rivals FC Copenhagen ended in a goalless draw. The teams are separated by the Øresund Bridge which is the fastest route between Sweden and Denmark. Anderson Silva's late goal for Pafos fired them to a 1-0 victory against Dynamo Kyiv. A first-half penalty from Toral Bayramov secured a 1-0 away win for Qarabag at the Macedonian club Shkendija.

Orioles ride 4th-inning surge en route to win over Phillies
August 6 - Trevor Rogers logged six solid innings and Coby Mayo hit a three-run homer to guide the visiting Baltimore Orioles to a 5-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday. Rogers (5-2) struck out six while working around eight hits and a pair of walks for Baltimore, which had dropped the first two games of the series by a combined margin of 18-3. Mayo finished with two hits for the visitors in this one, as did Adley Rutschman. Ranger Suarez (8-5) allowed five runs and nine hits over 6 1/3 innings for Philadelphia, which saw its three-game winning streak come to an end. Trea Turner went 3-for-4 with an RBI in a losing effort. The Phillies failed to inflict much damage against Rogers despite recording at least one hit in every inning he pitched. Perhaps the most pivotal sequence for the Baltimore left-hander came in the third inning, when he struck out Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper after Turner tripled with one out. Riding the momentum from that escape, the Orioles scored four runs against Suarez in the top of the fourth. After Gunnar Henderson and Rutschman reached on singles to open the inning, Jeremiah Jackson laced a double into the left-field corner for his first-career RBI. One pitch later, Mayo launched a changeup from Suarez deep into the left-field seats for his fourth home run of the season. Philadelphia got on the board in the fifth, but Rogers limited the damage. After surrendering a walk and two hits to begin the frame -- including Turner's RBI single -- the southpaw retired Schwarber, Harper and Nick Castellanos to keep the score at 4-1. The hosts threatened again in the sixth, putting two runners on with two outs. But Rogers induced Rafael Marchan into an inning-ending grounder. Suarez allowed a one-out double to Alex Jackson in the seventh, followed by Jackson Holliday's run-scoring single that ended Suarez's night with the scoreboard reading 5-1. Philadelphia again had a scoring opportunity in the seventh, as Turner led off with a double. However, he never moved from second base as Dietrich Enns struck out Schwarber, Harper and Castellanos in succession. Enns fanned two more hitters in the eighth before Keegan Akin took care of things in the ninth. --Field Level Media
