'Monster' dad killed his daughter before hiding her body for months

Daily Record3 days ago
Adam Montgomery refused to tell a court where his daughter Harmony's remains were.
A "monster" dad murdered his five-year-old daughter and carried her remains around for months, hiding them in different locations.

Police believe Adam Montgomery killed Harmony Montgomery two years before she was reported missing from the US state of New Hampshire in 2021.

He has since been jailed for a minimum of 56 years, with the state's governor stating he "deserved to spend the rest of his life in prison".

In July this year, Harmony's birth mother Crystal Sorey sued Montgomery for abuse and neglect against their little girl, the Mirror reports.
The pair had separated by the time Harmony was born in 2014. She spent her first few years living between her mother's care and foster families, until Crystal lost custody in 2018 while battling substance abuse.
Her father was granted custody, despite an extensive criminal record. Crystal said the last time she saw her daughter alive was in a video call around Easter in 2019.

According to Montgomery's estranged wife Kayla, who testified at his trial, by November that year the family, including her two sons, had been evicted from their home and were living in a car.
She claimed that on December 7, Montgomery had punched Harmony, who was partially sighted and had additional needs, in anger because she had wet herself inside the car.

She added she had been passing food to the children after visiting a fast food restaurant, but didn't notice Harmony was dead until they stopped due to the car breaking down.
Kayla claimed her husband put the little girl's body in a duffel bag, and continually hid her in different places over three months, including the boot of a car, a ceiling vent in a homeless shelter, a freezer and a cooler. She added she did not report the death because she was scared of Montgomery, who was also abusive towards her.
Montgomery's legal team said Kayla, who fled from him in 2021, was lying to protect herself because she was the last person to see Harmony alive.

Crystal eventually reported her daughter missing, with police issuing an appeal with images on New Year's Eve in 2021. They later determined the youngster had been killed, and legally declared her dead in early 2024.
Montgomery pleaded guilty to charges that he "purposely and unlawfully removed, concealed or destroyed" Harmony's body and falsified evidence, but insisted he did not kill his daughter.

However, the jury found him guilty in February 2024. He was sentenced in May to a minimum of 56 years behind bars, added to a 32-and-a-half year sentence he had started serving the previous year for unrelated gun offences.
He was also convicted of assaulting Harmony in 2019 and tampering with a witness, regarding Kayla.
A prosecutor offered to reduce his sentence if he told the court where his daughter's body was. However, he remained silent and her remains have never been found.

Following the sentencing, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu said in a statement: "I am grateful to the judge, jury, and Department of Justice for delivering justice for Harmony. Adam Montgomery is a monster and deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison."

Crystal filed a lawsuit for wrongful death against the state's Division for Children, Youth and Families last year. In May, officials said they would compensate her with $2.25million, but stated this was not an admission of its wrongdoing.

New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella said in a statement: "The state agreed to these settlements to avoid prolonged litigation and support closure for the families. We recognize their profound loss and hope this brings some measure of peace."
In July 2025, Crystal sued Montgomery on behalf of her daughter's estate, arguing that the youngster "endured breath-taking abuse and neglect by her father."
According to WCVB, the complaint states: "Five-year-old Harmony Montgomery was beaten to death by her father, Adam Montgomery, in December 2019.
"From the time Harmony was placed with her father in February 2019 until the date of her death in December 2019, Harmony endured breath-taking abuse and neglect by her father, leading ultimately to Harmony's homicide."

Shannon Matthews' mum Karen assaulted in prison as pal shares shocking details about jail stint

Karen Matthews friend Julie Bushby opened up on This Morning about her friend's eight years in prison following her conviction of kidnapping her daughter Shannon in 2008 A friend of Shannon Matthews' mum Karen has disclosed that she would make prison visits during her eight-year stretch for orchestrating her daughter's kidnapping. Nine-year-old Shannon vanished on February 19, 2008 in West Yorkshire, triggering a massive police hunt and community search that lasted nearly a month. ‌ Shannon was discovered safe and sound at a property owned by Michael Donovan - the uncle of her mother Karen's partner Craig Meehan. It subsequently emerged that Karen had plotted the abduction with Meehan to cash in on the media attention. ‌ Karen's pal Julie Bushby featured on This Morning (Tuesday) ahead of Prime Video's new documentary The Hunt for Shannon Matthews, reports the Mirror. ‌ Discussing the prison visits, Bushby revealed that Karen would occasionally be "black and blue" during her jail stays. Speaking on This Morning, she told Andi Peters and Emma Willis: "There was a time I went that she was black and blue but she walked into that many doors. "It was a different story each time I went. She just tells me she was scared of family." ‌ She added: "I had so many questions. I used to go visit her at prison. I asked her the same questions." When questioned about her feelings when Karen was nicked for kidnapping Shannon, Bushby said: "When she actually came out with it, it was mixed emotions. ‌ "Relief that it was over, anger, disappointment, used and abused - but not just me, the entire community. She just made us look like plant pots." Matthews was freed from jail in April 2012 after completing half her term. This follows reports that her paedophile former partner has been 'forced to flee again as his home is vandalised'. ‌ Karen is set to feature in Amazon Prime Video's forthcoming documentary The Hunt for Shannon Matthews. Last year, a musical parody about the shocking abduction of Shannon Matthews was branded "cruel and sadistic" by the public. ‌ Performances by troupe K*** and the Gang were completely sold out when Shannon Matthews: The Musical premiered in 2022, with the group planning a film adaptation of the production. Local Labour councillor Mussarat Pervaiz condemned the show for trivialising the girl's ordeal, describing it as "disgusting". Prime Video will re-examine the case in its upcoming documentary which forms part of a large series of true crime investigations airing on the streaming service this year. ‌ A TV insider previously told The Sun: 'The original case dumbfounded the nation when it happened and it took years before many could truly grasp what had happened. 'Shows like 2017 ITV drama The Moorside, which starred Sheridan Smith, tried to shed some light on the events but it continues to be a subject that stirs up an array of emotions. 'The creators of the new documentary hope that the passing of time and the benefit of distance might help lend some perspective on the story.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Married teacher raped boy after luring child to her home for 'play dates'

Alley Bardfield took an 11-year-old pupil home for 'play dates' and gave him money before sharing naked pictures of herself and the boy on social media. A married teacher tempted an 11-year-old student to her home for so-called "play dates" before raping the child. ‌ Alley Bardfield, 34, was accused of kissing the boy, undressing him and engaging in sexual intercourse with him on the bed she typically shared with her husband at their marital residence, reports the Mirror. ‌ The court was told Bardfield sent the boy $700 (£520) over several months through a money app and swapped explicit photos with him on Snapchat. ‌ The boy's parents became suspicious when they noticed him acting strangely at home, and, after checking his phone and social media, discovered he had been to Bardfield's house in Mount Zion, Illinois, the month before. Bardfield called the visits "play dates" one of which, disturbingly, led to a sexual encounter. When his parents confronted him over the text messages, he admitted what had happened, prompting them to call police. They also found pictures of their son with the teacher at her home, reports the Mirror. ‌ His distraught mum rushed him to hospital, where a rape kit was carried out in April 2024. Police then worked with the family to snare Bardfield by getting the boy to send incriminating texts and record phone calls with her. The boy sent her a message saying he was leaving town but hoped to see her again upon his return. He wrote: "I love you and I miss you, Alley. When I come back I'll see if I can come over." Bardfield allegedly responded: "You're always welcome. I love and miss you too." ‌ Police obtained a court order for a wiretap, during which the boy phoned Bardfield and she told him "her tubes are tied" and she "cannot get pregnant". The affidavit states he then asked if they could "do it again" if he came over that weekend and Bardfield allegedly replied: "Yes." Bardfield, a supply teacher from an Illinois school, admitted to predatory criminal assault against a minor this week. A spokesperson for Mount Zion Police said: "These allegations are shocking, especially when the alleged perpetrator is someone in a position of trust." ‌ "The Mt. Zion Police Department is fully committed working with victims and their families as they deal with the trauma that results from these incidents." Upon the emergence of the allegations in April last year, Bardfield, who is married to a construction worker, was promptly dismissed from her position. The school issued a statement saying: "While none of the alleged conduct occurred at a school, student safety is always our top priority. We are working with Mount Zion Police and providing support to students and staff." Bardfield is set to be sentenced on September 25. Predatory criminal sexual assault carries a maximum sentence of up to 60 years in prison. However, prosecutors have agreed to limit the recommended sentence to 40 years.

XL bully ban 'is failing' as attacks still rife despite hundreds of dogs put down

The RSPCA has released new data from police forces across the UK as it calls on the government to overhaul the Dangerous Dogs Act with a more modern approach The XL bully ban is "failing" with fatal and severe attacks persisting - despite authorities having seized thousands of suspected banned dogs, the RSPCA has warned. ‌ Hundreds of dogs have been euthanised under the ban, according to new data obtained from UK police forces by the charity. But almost two years on, attacks are still rife with another 12 people killed by dogs to date, including a 10-year-old girl. Seven-month-old Elle Doherty was killed by her family's Belgian Malinois pet after it bit her on the head in Coventry in June last year. ‌ But of those 12, eight were killed by XL bullies, and another three were mauled to death by bull breeds, including pit bulls and bullmastiffs. And three more horrific attacks were reported across the country last week alone. It comes after a boy, 5, is murdered by kidnappers because his mum couldn't pay £39 ransom. ‌ A seven-year-old boy was left needing surgery after being attacked by his family's XL bully in Doncaster, South Yorks, while neighbours in Fleetwood, Lancs had to fight off an XL bully with a machete after it mauled a woman in her 40s. In Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, a man was forced to jump over a fence and into a river to escape the jaws of another XL bully, police said. ‌ The ban, which began at the end of 2023 following a Mirror campaign, forced XL bully owners to register their dog for an exemption certificate and to muzzle them in public places. The new law also made it illegal to breed, sell, advertise or give away an XL bully. Now the RSPCA is calling on ministers to conduct a 'full and in-depth' review of the Dangerous Dogs Act, which was first passed 34 years ago this August. Under the Act, a dog can be seized if it is a prohibited type - namely an XL bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino or Fila Brasileiro. The charity is urging the Government to 'prioritise an approach that encourages responsible dog ownership', adding that individual breed bans do not work. RSPCA data shows 1,035 dogs were seized as suspected banned types during 2024. But the charity said the true figures will be much higher, with only 19 of the 43 police forces across the UK having responded to its request for information. ‌ Of those seized last year more than 65 percent (674) were assessed and identified as XL bullies. The five police forces reporting the highest number of seized dogs were Leicestershire (192 dogs, including 177 XL bullies), Nottinghamshire (145, including 132 XL bullies), Thames Valley (134), Humberside (99) and Lincolnshire (52). Only seven police forces reported euthanasia figures - but this found 511 banned dogs had been put to sleep, including 316 in South Yorkshire. Further research from the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes shows its members had to put 693 dogs to sleep in 2024 as a result of the legislation - more than triple the 2023 figure (201), and more than eight times the number in 2022 (80). Dr Samantha Gaines, Head of Companion Animals at the RSPCA, said: "This data paints a predictable and depressing picture - with the change in legislation meaning high numbers of XL bully dogs are being seized and put to sleep. It is absolutely heartbreaking that dog fatalities and serious bite incidents are continuing and in very concerning numbers - which underlines that the Dangerous Dog Act simply isn't working, and hasn't been for 34 years. "The UK Government urgently needs to adopt a different approach; focussed instead on preventing dangerous behaviours rather than focussing on the dog's individual breed. The law has been failing dogs and, crucially, public safety too for long. It's time for decision makers to review the current dog control situation and commit to measures which effectively protect public safety and safeguard dog welfare."
