Shannon Matthews' mum Karen assaulted in prison as pal shares shocking details about jail stint
A friend of Shannon Matthews' mum Karen has disclosed that she would make prison visits during her eight-year stretch for orchestrating her daughter's kidnapping. Nine-year-old Shannon vanished on February 19, 2008 in West Yorkshire, triggering a massive police hunt and community search that lasted nearly a month.
Shannon was discovered safe and sound at a property owned by Michael Donovan - the uncle of her mother Karen's partner Craig Meehan. It subsequently emerged that Karen had plotted the abduction with Meehan to cash in on the media attention.
Karen's pal Julie Bushby featured on This Morning (Tuesday) ahead of Prime Video's new documentary The Hunt for Shannon Matthews, reports the Mirror.
Discussing the prison visits, Bushby revealed that Karen would occasionally be "black and blue" during her jail stays.
Speaking on This Morning, she told Andi Peters and Emma Willis: "There was a time I went that she was black and blue but she walked into that many doors.
"It was a different story each time I went. She just tells me she was scared of family."
She added: "I had so many questions. I used to go visit her at prison. I asked her the same questions."
When questioned about her feelings when Karen was nicked for kidnapping Shannon, Bushby said: "When she actually came out with it, it was mixed emotions.
"Relief that it was over, anger, disappointment, used and abused - but not just me, the entire community. She just made us look like plant pots."
Matthews was freed from jail in April 2012 after completing half her term.
This follows reports that her paedophile former partner has been 'forced to flee again as his home is vandalised'.
Karen is set to feature in Amazon Prime Video's forthcoming documentary The Hunt for Shannon Matthews.
Last year, a musical parody about the shocking abduction of Shannon Matthews was branded "cruel and sadistic" by the public.
Performances by troupe K*** and the Gang were completely sold out when Shannon Matthews: The Musical premiered in 2022, with the group planning a film adaptation of the production.
Local Labour councillor Mussarat Pervaiz condemned the show for trivialising the girl's ordeal, describing it as "disgusting".
Prime Video will re-examine the case in its upcoming documentary which forms part of a large series of true crime investigations airing on the streaming service this year.
A TV insider previously told The Sun: 'The original case dumbfounded the nation when it happened and it took years before many could truly grasp what had happened.
'Shows like 2017 ITV drama The Moorside, which starred Sheridan Smith, tried to shed some light on the events but it continues to be a subject that stirs up an array of emotions.
'The creators of the new documentary hope that the passing of time and the benefit of distance might help lend some perspective on the story.'

How to watch new Shannon Matthews documentary 17 years on from fake kidnap scandal
The kidnapping of Shannon Matthews rocked the UK in 2008, and now a new documentary following the fake abduction plot will arrive on one of the world's biggest streaming services The kidnapping of schoolgirl Shannon Matthews dominated the headlines in February 2008 and created mass panic across the country. On a Tuesday evening, stay-at-home mum Karen Matthews reported her nine-year-old daughter missing to Dewsbury police, and West Yorkshire officials launched what became the biggest investigation in that area since the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper. After three weeks and three days, the search, which was also spearheaded by residents of the Dewsbury Moor estate, came to an end when Shannon was found alive in a flat in Batley Carr, just mere miles from her home. She was found at the home of Michael Donovan, the uncle of her mother's then-partner Craig Meehan, who was convicted of possessing 49 indecent images of children in 2008 but was not involved in the kidnapping of Shannon and was never charged with any offences relating to the incident. In a shock twist, it turned out that Karen, now 49, had plotted the entire thing from the start to in an attempt to claim £50,000 in reward money that had been offered by national newspapers. It emerged that she arranged for Donovan, who died in 2024 at the age of 54, to collect Shannon after school and keep her at his flat until she saw fit. It comes after Bonnie Blue is hit with hundreds of Ofcom complaints as viewers slam 'sick' documentary. Karen, who had seven children by five different fathers, was found guilty of found guilty of kidnapping, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice sentenced to eight years in prison along with her accomplice, although by the time she was released early in 2012, he was already out. Shannon, who had been drugged and tied up in the small flat, was immediately placed under police protection once she had been found and was given lifelong anonymity with a new High Court ruling. Now, the events of the entire plot have been re-explored in the The Hunt for Shannon Matthews, which viewers can watch on Amazon Prime Video from Sunday 17th August. In the years since the bizarre case shocked Britain, the story has been told through several books and documentaries. In 2017, it was adapted into the BBC series The Moorside, starring Game of Thrones actress Gemma Whelan as the woman who was dubbed the nation's worst mum, and Sheridan Smith as Julie Bushy, the kindly neighbour who headed up the communal efforts to find Shannon, completely unaware that it was all a hoax. It was also the subject of a satirical musical, which premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2022, and that was made into a film which was also released by Amazon's Prime Video service. But TV insiders have insisted that this time round, the new documentary, which features new interviews with former friends and neighbours of Karen Matthews, will offer up a fresh perspective on the whole story, especially because such time has passed since the events took place. A source told The Sun: "The original case dumbfounded the nation when it happened and it took years before many could truly grasp what had happened. 'Shows like 2017, The Moorside which starred Sheridan Smith , tried to shed some light on the events but it continues to be a subject that stirs up an array of emotions. The creators of the new documentary hope that the passing of time and the benefit of distance might help lend some perspective on the story." It is the third in a series of recent true crime documentaries released by the streaming giant, the first of which was The Wimbledon Killer, which looked back on the murder of mum Rachel Nickell in the early 1990s, and the second was Surviving The Tunisia Beach Attack, which examined the shooting of 38 holidaymakers, more than a decade on from when the atrocity took place.

New favourite for huge Harry Potter role named after major cast update
They are currently the frontrunner after being cast for the same part in another series A new favourite has emerged to be cast in a pivotal role for the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter series following a major cast update. The majority of the main stars have already been unveiled for the new adaptation, including the rising young actors who will portray the eponymous character and his best mates Hermione Grainger and Ron Weasley. They are already accompanied by renowned comic actors John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore and Nick Frost as Hagrid. The studio has also announced its decision to cast Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape. However, it remains unconfirmed who will play the series' antagonist, Lord Voldemort. A star from Marvel and Succession is now tipped to take on the part. This follows casting news for a new audiobook series. Audible have disclosed that all the books will receive Full-Cast Audio Editions, reports the Mirror. While previous Harry Potter novels were narrated by Stephen Fry, these new versions will feature a full roster of stars portraying each character. This includes Matthew Macfadyen as Lord Voldemort, leading to speculation that he is the new favourite to also play the role for HBO. Other cast members include Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore, Riz Ahmed as Professor Snape, Michelle Gomez as Professor McGonagall and Cush Jumbo as the narrator. The speculation surrounding Macfadyen's potential casting in the television series, which could span a decade, comes as Arabella Stanton, the young actress set to play Hermione Granger in the HBO series, is also slated to voice the character in the first three instalments of the Audible audio series. According to OBLG, the actor who portrayed Tom Wambsgans in HBO's hit drama series Succession is now even odds to also take on the role on screen, making him the current outright favourite. However, he's not the only high-profile star in contention. Other Marvel stars, a former Doctor Who and an Oscar winner are also reportedly under consideration. The current odds are: Cillian Murphy is currently considered a long shot, following the Irish actor's recent Academy Award win for his performance in Oppenheimer. He recently received endorsement from Ralph Fiennes, who played the part in the films. Speaking on a US chat show, Fiennes said: "Cillian is a fantastic actor. That's a wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favour of Cillian." Interestingly, Fiennes only debuted as Voldemort from the fourth film when he is first seen in his true form, with Richard Bremmer portraying the character who must not be named when he is hiding on Professor Quirrel's head. Meanwhile, Murphy is also being tipped to be cast as the next James Bond villain.
