West Ham issue Michail Antonio statement and confirm seven players will leave

Daily Mirror3 hours ago

West Ham have confirmed that they are yet to make a decision on Michail Antonio's future following his horror car crash. The striker has been sidelined since December after crashing his Ferrari in Essex.
But with Antonio's deal set to expire in the summer, the Hammers have offered clarification. A statement from the Hammers on Monday read: "Given Michail Antonio's unique situation, following his serious road traffic accident in December 2024, there will be no formal decision and announcement on his future until such time that it is considered right and appropriate.
"However, as his current contract is also due to expire on 30 June, for the purposes of the Premier League Retained List procedure at the end of the 2024/25 season, Michail will be listed as a free transfer.
"As a long-serving, highly-respected player, and a much-loved member of the West Ham family, the Club's absolute priority at this time is to support Michail personally in his journey to resume playing at the highest level."
Antonio recently released a video documenting his gruelling recovery from the broken leg that he sustained in the crash. A video appeared on his Instagram account with the caption: "Faith will overcome all challenges".
It showed the Jamaica international learning to walk again, his emotional return to the London Stadium, as well as his reunions with teammates in hospital and in training.
A number of his colleagues have replied to the update. Tomas Soucek replied with three heart emojis, while Vladimir Coufal wrote: "Respect brother". Ex-West Ham captain and current Arsenal star Declan Rice also replied as he wrote: "Monster."
The update comes just a month after Antonio vowed to return to the pitch. "Yes, 100 per cent. I will play again," he said. "It's the biggest injury I've ever had in my career.
"But the fact that I'm already two to three months ahead of where I should be, I know that I'll play again, and I know that once I'm playing the game I'll get the sharpness back.
"People have always doubted me. My mental strength is something that I've always believed in and this is just another setback, and it is not going to stop me."
Antonio, 35, has made 323 appearances for the club since his arrival from Nottingham Forest and scored 83 goals.
While a decision is pending over Antonio's future, the Premier League side have confirmed seven stars will depart over the coming month. Aaron Cresswell, Łukasz Fabiański, Vladimír Coufal, Danny Ings and Kurt Zouma are leaving, while youngsters Kamarai Swyer and Brad Dolaghan are set to bid farewell.

Tottenham close in on appointing Thomas Frank as new head coach

Spurs sacked Ange Postecoglou on Friday, despite Europa League success, and quickly set their sights on Frank – who has gained admirers for his work over an impressive seven-year period at the west London club. After positive discussions over the weekend, there is a growing confidence that Frank will be the man to replace Postecoglou, PA understands. Frank's current deal at Brentford runs until the summer of 2027 and contains a release clause reported to be in the region of £10million. Brentford are expected to hold out for Frank's release clause but, while an official approach from Tottenham is yet to occur, the Danish coach is expected to make the move across London. The 51-year-old would take over a Spurs side which won the Europa League last month but finished 17th in the Premier League. Poor domestic form during the 2024-25 season accounted for Postecoglou's job as the Spurs board were forced to make 'one of the toughest decisions' they have had to make in dismissing the head coach who ended a 17-year trophy drought. 'It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond,' a club statement on Friday read. Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties. — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) June 6, 2025 PA understands Tottenham have also relieved coaches Mile Jedinak, Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo of their duties. Ryan Mason left his role as Spurs first-team coach last week to take over as West Brom boss, which opens the door for Frank to bring in some of his own staff. Another departure from Spurs this summer will be Scott Munn, who was made chief football officer at the club in 2023, PA understands. Spurs technical director Johan Lange has remained in post and is set to renew allegiances with compatriot Frank. A post shared by Brentford Football Club (@brentfordfc) Frank and Lange worked together at Danish club Lyngby before they both made their mark in the Premier League. Lange attempted to bring Frank to Aston Villa in 2022 when he worked at the Midlands outfit. Former Brondby boss Frank has developed a strong reputation in English football since he took over Brentford, with his tactical nous and man-management skills often lauded by rival managers and pundits. After Frank guided Brentford to promotion in 2021, he quickly enabled them to compete strongly in the Premier League despite a modest budget and has continued to be linked to a number of high-profile vacancies in recent years.

Uriah Rennie remembered as ‘epitome of a role model' after death at 65

Once described as the 'fittest' match official in world football, Rennie recently revealed he was learning to walk again after a rare neurological condition left him paralysed from the waist down. After his death was announced on Sunday, Howard Webb, the Professional Game Match Officials Board Limited (PGMOL) chief refereeing officer, paid tribute to his former colleague. Webb said in a statement: 'Uri was not only a trailblazer who paved the way for many others after becoming the first black referee in the Premier League, he was a great person and a great referee who cared deeply about his community and helping people fulfil their potential. 'He was a strong influence on our refereeing group too, offering a calming presence and we shared many good times together. 'An epitome of a role model, Uri was a valued member of the football family who has been taken from us too soon. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. He will be sorely missed by us all but his legacy will live on.' We are deeply saddened to hear the heartbreaking news about Uriah Rennie. The Premier League said on X: 'Uriah was a pioneering trailblazer whose legacy will live on, continuing to inspire future generations.' Rennie became a FIFA-listed referee in 2000 and joined the select group of professionals one year later before retiring in 2008. Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out said on X: 'We are deeply saddened to hear the heartbreaking news about Uriah Rennie. 'Uriah played a massive role in shaping the game as we know it today. Football should always be grateful to him.' In November 2023 martial arts expert Rennie was awarded an honorary doctorate by Sheffield Hallam University for his distinguished contributions to sport and his work with South Yorkshire communities. He was last month installed as the chancellor of the university and was labelled by former Premier League referee Chris Foy as a 'real community hero in that part of the world'. Chris Foy, pictured, paid tribute to mentor and friend Uriah Rennie (Mike Egerton/PA) In an emotional interview with talkSPORT, Foy said: 'He was a gentleman, a gentle giant. He was a friend to me, a mentor to me, he was just a special person who put everybody first before himself. 'He was a real presence on the field and he was a real presence off the field, a true gentleman. If it was difficult for him, he never showed it because he was always grounded. He loved refereeing.' Another former Premier League referee, Dermot Gallagher, told Sky Sports: 'As a person he was humble, he was quiet, he was unassuming. But most importantly, he was kind.'

Michail Antonio 's future with West Ham remains uncertain as he recovers from a serious car crash in December, which resulted in a broken femur. West Ham's priority is to support Antonio's recovery and resumption of playing at the highest level, according to a club statement. The club stated that due to Antonio's "unique situation" following the accident, no formal decision on his future will be made until it is considered "right and appropriate." Lukasz Fabianski, Vladimir Coufal, Aaron Cresswell, Danny Ings, and Kurt Zouma are also set to leave West Ham at the end of their contracts this month.
