Toll-free helpline to report bonded labour cases launched in Telangana
Complaints will be acted upon immediately by the labour department, the minister said at an event held in the city.
Organised by the Trilanga Unorganised Workers Union, Swecha Gamanam (a coalition of NGOs), and the labour department, the programme featured testimonies from survivors of bonded labour who spoke about their exploitation.
The minister announced that rescued bonded labourers will be given priority in Indiraamma Illu housing allocations, as part of broader rehabilitation efforts.
He also declared that February 9 will be observed annually as Bonded Labour Abolition Day.

Cases have been reported from districts including Nagarkurnool, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Yadadri, Narayanpet, Vikarabad, Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Warangal, Peddapalli, Karimnagar, Hanumakonda, Mulugu, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, and Medchal Malkajgiri.

12 bonded labourers, including 7 children, rescued from Pune jaggery unit
Twelve workers, including seven children, were rescued from a jaggery-making unit in Pune district on Wednesday, July 30, during a bonded labour rescue operation. The raid was conducted jointly by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Pune, the district administration's labour department, and Pune Rural Police. The victims, including seven children, were found to be natives of Paithan in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district. Their movements were restricted, and they had been facing physical abuse at the jaggery unit for the past two years, stated the DLSA officials. Sonal Patil, secretary of DLSA, Pune, said the raid was carried out at the unit in Alegaon Paga in Shirur Taluka of Pune district based on a complaint from an NGO, Indian Labourline. Patil said that release certificates were issued to the 12 labourers as per the directions of Principal District and Session Judge M K Mahajan. The district administration arranged for the safe transportation of the victims to their village in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. 'Action was taken as per the Bonded Labour Standard Operating Procedure,' said Patil, adding that the raid coincided with World Day against Trafficking in Persons, which is July 30. The police at Shirur station filed a First Information Report (FIR) against one Sandeep Dubey, reportedly the operator of the jaggery unit, under sections of the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. In the last week of June, DLSA rescued 14 family members belonging to the Bhill tribe from a private farm in Ranjangaon – Sandas village in Shirur. Hailing from Jalgaon and Dhule districts, the victims came to Pune for work in December 2023, but were later forced to work in extremely bad conditions for about 18 months at the farm, where they were each paid just Rs 50 for 14 hours of daily work.

Andhra DGP vows action against human traffickers
VIJAYAWADA: Marking the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, Director General of Police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta unveiled a poster with the message 'Human Trafficking is an Organised Crime – End the Exploitation' at the police headquarters in Mangalagiri on Wednesday. Addressing the gathering, DGP Gupta called human trafficking a severe violation of human rights and personal freedom. He emphasised that the State police would take stringent action against traffickers with a zero-tolerance policy. Highlighting that July 30 is globally observed to raise awareness on this issue, Gupta said that women and children remain the most vulnerable. The DGP noted that a dedicated unit under the Women and Child Safety Wing is working to combat trafficking through strict enforcement, victim protection, and dismantling trafficking networks. The unit ensures prosecution of offenders and facilitates compensation and rehabilitation for victims. Citing recent convictions, Gupta said the department's efforts are yielding results. In Guntur's Pedakakani police station, an accused was sentenced to life and fined Rs 10,000. In Kadapa's Proddatur I-Town police station, a trafficker received seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a Rs 5,000 fine. He urged the public to report any trafficking-related information via helpline 112, the Shakti App, or WhatsApp (7993485111), assuring confidentiality. Anti-Human Trafficking Cells are now active in all 26 districts under the supervision of women police station house officers.

Anti-human trafficking awareness programme held
Puttaparthi: Marking the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, an awareness programme was organised on Wednesday at Mangalakara Degree College, Sri Sathya Sai district. The event was conducted under the directions of District SP V Ratna. Puttaparthi DSP Vijay Kumar participated as the chief guest. During the programme, DSP Vijay Kumar unveiled a special awareness poster jointly developed by ATSEC India Andhra Pradesh Chapter, HELP Organisation, and Jana Jagruthi. He emphasised that human trafficking was not just a social issue but a deep-rooted, organised crime. He stressed the need for strict enforcement of laws, intelligence-based investigations and strong societal cooperation to combat trafficking. He added that both the legal and police systems in Andhra Pradesh were playing a crucial role in eradicating human trafficking, and called for every citizen to support these efforts. Speaking on the occasion, Jana Jagruthi Project Director Anjaneyulu highlighted the importance of not just prevention but also rehabilitation of victims with dignity, timely compensation, mental health care, and restoration of their rights. The poster which was released carried the slogan: 'Every police officer, legal professional, and social worker must work together to stop human trafficking.' The initiative urged authorities to leverage technology, coordinate across States and nations and track financial transactions to dismantle trafficking networks. Jana Jagruthi announced ongoing district-wide awareness campaigns to build a trafficking-free society. The event was attended by college principal Ramesh Babu, faculty, students, project manager Anjaneyulu, MEA Ashok, ANM Haritha, ORWs and PEs.
