12 bonded labourers, including 7 children, rescued from Pune jaggery unit
The raid was conducted jointly by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Pune, the district administration's labour department, and Pune Rural Police.
The victims, including seven children, were found to be natives of Paithan in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district. Their movements were restricted, and they had been facing physical abuse at the jaggery unit for the past two years, stated the DLSA officials.
Sonal Patil, secretary of DLSA, Pune, said the raid was carried out at the unit in Alegaon Paga in Shirur Taluka of Pune district based on a complaint from an NGO, Indian Labourline.
Patil said that release certificates were issued to the 12 labourers as per the directions of Principal District and Session Judge M K Mahajan.
The district administration arranged for the safe transportation of the victims to their village in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. 'Action was taken as per the Bonded Labour Standard Operating Procedure,' said Patil, adding that the raid coincided with World Day against Trafficking in Persons, which is July 30.
The police at Shirur station filed a First Information Report (FIR) against one Sandeep Dubey, reportedly the operator of the jaggery unit, under sections of the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
In the last week of June, DLSA rescued 14 family members belonging to the Bhill tribe from a private farm in Ranjangaon – Sandas village in Shirur.
Hailing from Jalgaon and Dhule districts, the victims came to Pune for work in December 2023, but were later forced to work in extremely bad conditions for about 18 months at the farm, where they were each paid just Rs 50 for 14 hours of daily work.

Two awarded life term for 2022 murder of Dalit youth in Ambedkar Nagar
Lucknow: A court in Ambedkar Nagar on Saturday sentenced two men to life imprisonment for axing a 28-year-old Dalit youth to death in 2022. Special judge Ram Vilas Singh convicted the duo under IPC's sections 302 (murder) and 34 (liability in criminal act) and section 3(2)(v) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 each. Special public prosecutor Sudip Mishra told TOI that the incident occurred in Gaya Ghat Pipri village under the Alapur police station area on the night of July 31, 2022. According to the FIR filed by Ramvriksha, the incident unfolded after former village pradhan Ranu Tiwari visited his younger brother Jalandhar, an electrician, to request a repair. Jalandhar agreed to do the work the following morning and subsequently left for the nearby Khajhapur. Around midnight, his wife heard noises and alerted the family. "When Ramvriksha tried calling up Jalandhar, the phone was answered by an unknown person who told them to come to the fields. Upon reaching, the family found Jalandhar lying severely injured. He was rushed to the govt hospital in Baskhari and then referred to the district hospital in Akbarpur, where he died during treatment," said Mishra. Following the complaint, an FIR was registered. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The accused — Aryan alias Sachin Yadav and Lalu alias Brijesh Yadav — were arrested. During the investigation, the police collected testimonies, scene maps, postmortem reports, call detail records, and video evidence. A charge sheet was filed, and the case was tried in the special SC/ST court. Hearing the case, the special judge found both the accused guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. "Despite the defence's plea that the accused were first-time offenders and came from impoverished backgrounds, the court sided with the prosecution, which highlighted the caste-based nature of the crime and the gravity of the offence. While the defence argued that there were no eyewitnesses and the case was a result of village enmity, the court held that the evidence — including the victim's dying statement, witness testimonies, and supporting forensic materials — was consistent and credible," the special public prosecutor said. "The judge concluded that the crime was intentional, caste-motivated, and brutal in nature," Mishra said. Court sentences drug peddler to 12 years imprisonment in Ludhiana
1 2 Ludhiana: A local court has sentenced Bobby, a 57-year-old man from this city's Old Quarter near the civil hospital, to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 1 lakh after police seized 3,000 intoxicant tablets from him. If the fine is not paid, he will face an additional year of imprisonment, the special court judge Harvinder Singh ruled. On May 28, 2020, Division Number Two police booked Bobby under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act following a police operation at Old Jail Road near the civil hospital. Assistant sub-inspector Sukhwinder Singh and other officers spotted Bobby returning on foot from Brown Road carrying a white plastic bag on his right shoulder. When he noticed the police, Bobby attempted to discard the bag, which was later found damaged, revealing red pills and blue capsules inside. Police apprehended Bobby on the spot and seized 3,000 capsules along with an additional 1,760 capsules, later. Despite attempts, no independent witnesses were available to be included in the police party at the time of recovery. Bobby was arrested and charged formally after police filed a chargesheet. During the trial, Bobby claimed he was implicated falsely and rejected all allegations of possession. However, the court found no evidence to support his defense. The judge noted that Bobby had neither claimed any enmity with the cops nor reported any false implication to higher authorities or provide the court with any private witnesses to prove his innocence. "Had the accused been innocent, he would have raised hue and cry against his false implication to the higher police officer," the court said. The evidence and testimonies confirmed Bobby's guilt, leading to his conviction and sentencing under applicable sections of the NDPS Act.
