Balochistan: Rights body condemns travel ban by Pakistani authorities
A Baloch human rights organisation on Monday strongly condemned the new travel ban imposed by the Pakistani authorities targetting the basic freedom of movement for civilians in Balochistan. Paank, the Baloch National Movement's Human Rights Department, mentioned that Pakistan's atrocities continue unabated as the region has been turned into an information blackout zone with 4G and 5G services already suspended, while the latest move by the authorities imposing the travel ban will further isolate the province. 'A recent directive issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Kech imposes strict travel restrictions on passenger coaches between Karachi, Turbat, Gwadar, and Panjgur, allowing movement only within narrowly fixed hours and making travel beyond certain checkpoints impossible without prior security approval," the rights body stated. Calling it an "unlawful and oppressive" order, Paank stated that the ban will disrupt daily life and violate the fundamental rights to free movement and access to essential services. Recently, the Human Rights Council (HRC) of Pakistan also condemned the Pakistani authorities for shutting down internet and mobile phone services in Balochistan, terming it a "blatant violation" of fundamental human rights. 'The decision by the Balochistan government to suspend 3G and 4G mobile and internet services across the entire province starting from August 6 is a cruel and disproportionate measure that targets millions of innocent citizens. This decision tramples on fundamental rights such as the right to communication, freedom of expression, education, health, and employment,' read a statement issued by the HRC Pakistan. Meanwhile, on Monday, another human rights organisation, Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), expressed deep concern regarding the enforced disappearance of Sana Ullah Baloch, Central Organising Committee Member of the National Democratic Party (NDP) in Balochistan. Citing information received, the BYC stated that on August 10, Sana Ullah was detained by personnel of Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Military Intelligence (MI) at Multan International Airport while travelling to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah. His current whereabouts remain unknown. The human rights body called for the immediate and unconditional release of Sana Ullah Baloch. The BYC viewed the incident as a grave infringement on the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful and political participation. The targetting of political workers through enforced disappearance, the rights body stated, constitutes a serious violation of Pakistan's obligations under international human rights law, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

Three years on, single-use plastic ban still ineffective
1 2 Patna: Three years after the Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) banned single-use plastic (SUP), Patna continues to struggle with enforcement. Street vendors and shopkeepers openly hand out SUP carry bags. Vegetable and fruit sellers, flower vendors and sweet shops are among the main users. The ban, introduced on July 1, 2022, initially had impact, said Ashok Ghosh, former BSPCB chairman. "Right after the law got implemented, it was quite successful but, over time, it got diluted and people have now completely forgotten about it," he added. Ghosh called for stricter enforcement by the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the district magistrate's office. "Factories that manufacture plastic should be kept in check and both the buyer, seller and user of plastic must be reprimanded heavily," he added. Ghosh, who has researched micro and nanoplastics, warned that plastic takes 20-500 years to break down. "When the plastic microns mix with the soil, it enters the food chain. The microplastic even goes airborne, going directly into the lungs," he said, urging people to use steel and copper vessels. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! "Cloth bags come for Rs 2, whereas we can get plastic packets for as cheap as 50 paisa," said Sunita Devi, a vegetable seller. Nita Devi, a fruit vendor, said customers refused cloth bags because they tore easily. Residents say sporadic action is ineffective. "A few raids once a year are not enough," said Puja Chauhan of Mithapur. PMC officials said a fresh campaign will begin on Aug 15 to make the capital SUP-free. Reverse vending machines will be installed, starting at Kadamkuan, to collect and recycle used plastic, they added. Vendors caught using SUPs will face fines from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000. Armed men loot 15kg gold & Rs 5L cash from Jabalpur fin bank
Jabalpur: Five armed men looted around 15 kg of gold and Rs 5 lakh in cash from the ESAF Small Finance Bank in Jabalpur's Khitola area on Monday morning after holding the staff at gunpoint. They fled on motorcycles within 20 minutes of entering the branch. The gang struck at 8.50 am, just as the bank opened after a two-day closure for Raksha Bandhan and Sunday. Three men with helmets entered the branch, where only four employees were present, and held them at gunpoint. They marched the staff to the strongroom, stuffed gold ornaments and cash into bags, and handed them to two waiting accomplices outside on motorcycles. By 9.10 am, they were speeding towards Jabalpur via the highway. The entire modus operandi of the robbery execution draws parallels with the sensational 2022 Katni gold loan branch heist when 16 kgs of gold was robbed in a similar fashion which was orchestrated by a jailed don from Bihar. Sources said the looted gold weighs about 15 kg, though police have not officially confirmed it. SP Jabalpur Sampat Upadhyay told TOI: "The exact quantity of gold or cash looted is being verified. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo CCTV footage from the bank and nearby areas are being examined. We have important leads, and the accused will be arrested soon." The branch had no security guard, making it a soft target. Sources say the timing and execution — hitting a branch without guards, right after holidays when roads are relatively empty — mirror the Katni robbery on November 26, 2022. In that case, masked gunmen stormed the Manappuram Gold Loan branch in Bargawan and looted 16 kg of gold and Rs 3 lakh in minutes. The former Katni SP S K Jain, now DIG Chambal range, said, "The said gang operates in a compartmentalised manner, with members often not knowing each other are assigned tasks. The don from inside jail, assigns different roles— some for recee, some for the actual heist, and others for transporting and hiding the loot. Gold is quickly passed on to other members to prevent recovery in case of arrest." The modus operandi in both cases sounds similar, say sources, like choosing day after a holiday for executing the robbery, targeting branches without security guards and ensuring swift disposal of loot.
