Near-perfect "savagely brutal" horror movie confirms streaming release date – and it's soon

Yahoo29-04-2025

Norwegian horror movie The Ugly Stepsister has landed a streaming release date – and it's soon.
Directed by Emilie Blichfeldt, the film is sinister twist on the original Cinderella story by the Grimm Brothers, following lead character Elvira (Lea Myren) as she goes to extreme and gory lengths to appeal to the prince.
Following its theatrical release in Norway in March and the UK last week, it's been confirmed that The Ugly Stepsister will be available to stream on Shudder in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand from 9 May.
The Ugly Stepsister is described as a "timely examination of body image and beauty standards" as Elvira prepares to win the prince's affection "at any cost".
"In a kingdom where beauty is a brutal business, Elvira will compete with the beautiful and enchanting Agnes to become the belle of the ball," reads the film's official synopsis.

Following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the horror movie debuted to a near-perfect score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it 'Certified Fresh' in the process.
Mashable described The Ugly Stepsister as "savagely brutal yet strangely beautiful", while Bloody Disgusting wrote: "It's elegant, stylish, and gnarly."
Paste added: "A beautifully captured and often quite funny piece of feminist social satire."
"Contrasting how her female characters feel with the expectations men put on them, Blichfeldt makes clear that impossible beauty standards are the unfairest of them all, whether in the real world or this twisted fictional kingdom," wrote Variety.

In other horror movie news, it was recently confirmed that 1998's Urban Legend is getting a "modern era" reboot.
The original slasher centred on a string of murders at a university campus seemingly inspired by urban legends, and featured a cast including Suicide Squad's Jared Leto, Dawson's Creek's Joshua Jackson, Smallville's Michael Rosenbaum and Sharknado's Tara Reid.
It was confirmed last week that Sony's Screen Gems label is in "early development" of a new version that will examine what an urban legend looks like and how they are spread in a world of digital information and social media.
The Ugly Stepsister will be available to stream on Shudder from 9 May.

Great Trailer for This Year's Sundance Audience Award Winning Film EAST OF WALL — GeekTyrant

The full trailer has been released for the film East of Wall , a film shot in the Badlands, from writer and director Kate Beecroft in her directorial debut. The movie debuted at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the Audience Award in the innovative Next section. The film stars Tabatha Zimiga, Porshia Zimiga, Scoot McNairy and Jennifer Ehle, and it's described as an "authentic portrait of female resilience in the 'New West' inspired and played by the women and girls who live it." The full synopsis reads: ' East of Wall is an authentic portrait of female resilience in the 'New West' inspired and played by the women and girls who live it. 'Set in the Badlands of South Dakota, Tabatha, a young, rebellious rancher, who rescues and resells horses, must make hard decisions to deal with her fractured family, financial uncertainty, and unresolved grief, all while providing refuge for a group of wayward neighborhood teens.' This looks like a fantastic original story, and I look forward to watching it. Check out the trailer below, and watch East of Wall when it hits theaters on August 15th.

Australian thriller packed with twists that has fans hooked is now streaming free in the UK

A twisty thriller dubbed "disturbing" and "gripping" by fans is finally available to stream for free in the UK. The Secrets She Keeps, starring Jessica De Gouw and Laura Carmichael, follows lonely pregnant woman Agatha (Carmichael) who meets successful online influencer Meghan (De Gouw), who also happens to be pregnant and is due to give birth around the same time. They are led down a dark and dangerous path when Agatha becomes obsessed with Meghan's seemingly perfect life and the secrets they both share. Based on the psychological thriller novel by Michael Robotham, the thriller series first aired in 2020 on 10Play in Australia before a second series hit Paramount+ two years later. For TV fans in the UK, all 12 episodes across season one and two are now available to stream for free on Channel 4 - so cancel your weekend plans and settle in. Related: Those who have seen The Secrets She Keeps said they binged it all and were left hooked, with one IMDb user calling the show "disturbing" while another said it was "a tense, gripping watch". While many praised the performances of De Gouw and Carmichael, others branded the narrative "predictable" in many ways despite its "unexpected" twists. The Secrets She Keeps currently holds an impressive 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with saying in its review: "A very watchable, albeit slightly shallow, exploration of how femininity and motherhood intertwine and toxify." Paste Magazine added: "Without performances as layered and emotionally sound as the ones Carmichael and De Gouw give, The Secrets She Keeps would be little more than the aforementioned pulpy ride. It's still pretty cockamamie, but in a way that is also fully believable." Related: The Guardian added: "The bedrock of the show is credible, serious drama, though this is undercut from time to time by pulpy genre elements more befitting old-school Ozploitation thrillers - such as 1979's Snapshot." Speaking to Radio Times, Downton Abbey star Carmichael opened up about the drastic difference between her role as Agatha and as Edith Crawley in the smash hit period drama. "You can't control what other people think of you," she says. "I enjoy a challenge, and I'm keen to try on different hats. When you do something for a long time, things become comfortable – you want to push yourself. "It's been such a gift being in Downton. It's opened so many doors. If another period drama came across my desk... if I loved the script, I wouldn't be too nervous of entering that world. But at the moment I'm drawn to things that feel different." The Secrets She Keeps is available to stream now on Channel 4. Digital Spy's first print magazine is here! Netflix's new thriller series has netted a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes — I can absolutely see why

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. I've been completely hooked on the new crime thriller, The Survivors, since it landed on Netflix last week and it seems I'm not the only one who enjoyed the series, as the show has also now landed a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The six-part series, based on the bestseller by Jane Harper, is set in the fictional seaside town of Evelyn Bay in Tasmania and follows Kieran Elliot, whose life was changed forever 15 years ago when his brother and best friend drowned while trying to rescue him from a terrible storm. While the small town was rocked by the terrible tragedy, a young woman called Gabby also went missing on the same night. However, this is a mystery that no one in the local area seems to talk about. But why? For any show to earn a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes is no easy task, but I can see why The Survivors has been awarded this honor. From the very first episode, I found myself gripped by the chillingly dark story, and the series really kicks off with a bang when, in the present day, Bronte, a woman from out of town comes to investigate what happened to Gabby on the fateful day she vanished a decade and a half ago. However, it soon transpires that there is someone in the town harbouring dark secrets and willing to go to unimaginable lengths to keep hidden when Brontë's digging into the past leads to her turning up dead on the beach. But who has killed her and what did she unearth that got her murdered? Soon, a complex web of secrets and lies is revealed and this show is one that will keep you guessing right until the very end of the series. Just when you think you have worked out where the storyline is going, another fresh twist hits you, and you're left questioning everyone and everything once again. If you are yet to watch The Survivors, make sure this is one show you add to your watch list - I promise you won't regret it. All six episodes of The Survivors ware available on Netflix worldwide now.
