European shares rise as investors weigh potential Russia-Ukraine peace deal
The pan-European STOXX 600 index was up 0.1%, as of 0708 GMT, with most major regional bourses in the green.
US President Donald Trump told his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy that Washington would help guarantee Ukraine's security in any peace deal to end Russia's war there, though the extent of any assistance was not immediately clear.
The pledge followed a White House meeting with European leaders, with formal guarantees expected to be finalised within the next 10 days.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin would meet within the next two weeks, followed by Trump extending a three-way meeting afterward to begin negotiations.
Defence stocks dropped 0.7%, pressured by news of a potential Ukraine-Russia summit, as hopes for de-escalation reduced demand for military-related assets.
Shares of Renk Group, Rheinmetall and Hensoldt slipped between 1.9% and 3.2%.
Merck fell marginally after Barclays downgraded the company's rating to 'equal weight' from 'overweight'.

India, China agree to resume direct flights, boost business links
NEW DELHI: India and China agreed on Tuesday to resume direct flights and step up trade and investment flows as the neighbours rebuild ties damaged by a 2020 border clash. The Asian giants are cautiously strengthening ties against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's unpredictable foreign policy, staging a series of high-level bilateral visits. The latest statements came at the end of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's two-day visit to New Delhi for the 24th round of talks with Indian National Security (NSA) Advisor Ajit Doval to resolve their decades old border dispute. The border talks covered issues related to pulling back troops both countries have amassed on their Himalayan border, delimitation of borders and boundary affairs, the Indian foreign ministry said, without elaborating. The talks appeared to have made no major breakthrough on those issues and Beijing said both countries agreed to meet again in China in 2026. But it also said the two countries would resume direct flights and boost trade and investment, along with smooth facilitation of visas. Direct flights have been suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. No date was given for their resumption. 'Stable, predictable, constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional as well as global peace and prosperity,' Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X after meeting Wang. Modi is scheduled to travel to China at the end of this month to take part in the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation - his first visit to the country in more than seven years. TIBET DAM A readout from the Chinese foreign ministry said Wang told Doval that 'the stable and healthy development of China-India relations is in the fundamental interests of the two countries' people'.

Japan futures edge higher on India auto demand hopes
TOKYO: Japanese rubber futures rose on Tuesday, supported by expectations of higher automobile demand in India and concerns about weather in top producer Thailand. The Osaka Exchange (OSE) rubber contract for January delivery was up 1.7 yen, or 0.53percent, at 320 yen ($2.17) per kg, as of 0215 GMT. The rubber contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for January delivery was flat at 15,825 yuan ($2,202.14) per metric ton. The most-active September butadiene rubber contract on the SHFE fell 10 yuan, or 0.08 percent, to 11,800 yuan per ton. India proposed lowering goods and services tax on small cars to 18 percent from 28 percent as part of sweeping consumption tax cuts. Citi analysts say this could spur demand which has been lacklustre for a long time. Automobile sales could influence the intensity of automobile manufacturing, which involves using rubber-made tyres. Thailand's meteorological agency warned of heavy rains and accumulations that may cause flash floods and overflows from August 21-24. Oil prices dipped as market participants contemplated planned three-way talks among Russia, Ukraine and the US to end the war in Ukraine. Natural rubber often takes direction from oil prices as it competes for market share with synthetic rubber, which is made from crude oil.

Near-term palm oil to be above 4,300 ringgit/T
KUALA LUMPUR: Palm oil prices are expected to hold above 4,300 ringgit per metric ton ($1,018) in the near term on a supply slowdown and a cut in soybean availability amid demand for biodiesel, the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) said on Tuesday. Crude palm oil prices were at 4,607 ringgit per metric ton on Tuesday, as of 0600 GMT. MPOC said the price's sustainability at its estimated level will depend on palm's competitiveness against soybean oil in the export market. Palm oil tracks the price movements of rival edible oils as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. The US Department of Agriculture projects that more than half of the country's soybean production will be used domestically for biodiesel in 2026, MPOC said. 'US soybean oil exports are forecast to drop from 1.15 million tons in 2025 to just 310,000 tons in 2026.' Brazil's soybean oil exports may also struggle to expand as it raised its biodiesel blend to 15% from 14%. 'As a result, the global market will increasingly rely on Argentine supplies to cover the shortfall. This tightening in export availability is likely to support vegetable oil prices,' it said. Meanwhile, Indonesia's plans to raise its biodiesel mandate to 50% in 2026, if implemented, will further tighten palm oil supplies as its requirement will jump to 16 million tons from 13 million tons in 2025, it added. MPOC doesn't expect a major build-up in September and October palm oil stocks, adding that any downturn in production in Peninsular Malaysia is expected to cap national production growth for the rest of the year. Demand from India is expected to remain firm as importers stock up ahead of the Diwali festival, while demand from Africa is also projected to remain steady.
