A force to be reckoned with
Nothing is final yet, and whether Apple acquires Perplexity AI or not heavily depends on whether it is forced to break off its current agreement with Google. Google pays Apple $20 billion annually to remain the default search engine on the latter's internet browser Safari. The ongoing antitrust trial regarding this matter may see this arrangement dissolved, which will be a major blow to both companies. If such a thing happens, Perplexity AI can replace Google on Safari as an AI-powered search engine instead. Google shares fell when news about Apple's plans to acquire Perplexity AI were first reported by Bloomberg Of course, such an acquisition would be an undeniable boon for Apple's research and development of AI.— and the features it promised during WWDC 2024 — still remains incomplete. In particular, a smarter Siri digital assistant is nowhere to be found as of yet.Perplexity AI's talent could help Apple speed up its AI development and not get left behind. Apple's failures in AI have given its rivals, Samsung and Google, a clear victory. Consumers who care about AI on smartphones will, understandably, choose a Galaxy S25 or a Pixel 9 instead of an iPhone 16 . This is also why Apple is following Samsung's lead and is reportedly discussing bringing Google's flagship AI model Gemini to iPhone If Apple acquires Perplexity AI, it could once again become a force to be reckoned with. It will be able to resume its work on its upcoming smart home hub as well as smart AR glasses . Such an acquisition will be costly, but I think it would serve Apple for decades to come.

Verizon reps allegedly reaching out to customers in a personal capacity

Verizon is allegedly encouraging store representatives to engage in unsolicited outreach and the situation is infuriating for both employees and customers. Reddit user lawrencenathan said that a local store employee sent them a message about ongoing promotions. What's strange about the message was that it didn't come from a company number and didn't seem to be automated. Instead, an employee apparently used their personal number, crafted a custom message, and even mentioned their name. —lawrencenathan, Reddit user, June 2025 Naturally, this ticked lawrencenathan off, who was appalled that an employee from a local store they had never been to was reaching out to them in a personal capacity. Verizon employees are texting customers using their personal numbers to promote deals. | Image Credit- lawrencenathan According to several Verizon employees who responded to the thread, this practice is not only encouraged, but mandated by Verizon . The company asks store representatives to chase leads via calls or messages. —Suitable_Potential_9, Reddit user, June 2025 Employees claim that they hate making these calls or sending these texts as much as customers despise receiving them, but many of them have a quota to meet, so they have no choice. —sk8trix, Reddit user, June 2025 Employees have suggested unsubscribing from such communication, but lawrencenathan has already done that. Apparently, opting out of marketing messages doesn't stop local representatives from reaching out to customers, though ideally, that shouldn't be the case. Some people have argued that this technically isn't spam and that a single benign message is nothing to get worked up about. —LMNoballz, Reddit user, June 2025 Regardless, many customers may still find such messages annoying and their best recourse would be to ask representatives contacting them to take them off their internal list. Some people are of the view that this is a harmless practice and that employees usually only contact people who are eligible for attractive upgrades and line offers. Viewed this way, some customers may actually benefit from these calls and messages. However, some employees have pointed out that in most cases, these calls don't work, so it can be assumed that for most people, they are a nuisance. Verizon is seemingly not the only company pushing this behavior, which is kind of ironic, given that the company comes across as a fierce advocate against spam on its website. However, with growth cooling off, and Verizon losing customers, it's not hard to see why this strategy is being pursued. We've reached out to Verizon for a comment and will update the story when we have a response. Secure your connection now at a bargain price! Apple could buy Perplexity AI, internal sources say

According to Mark Gurman's internal sources, Apple's executives are discussing the possibility of acquiring Perplexity AI, an AI-powered web search engine that has gained traction in the last year or so. However, the discussions are at an early stage, and Apple's mergers and acquisitions chief is overseeing them, along with executives at Apple's AI department. So, it's too early to tell whether the two companies will reach a deal. In fact, when asked for a comment, a Perplexity spokesperson said they have no knowledge of any current or future discussions on the matter. Even if Apple decides to acquire Perplexity AI, it will have several hurdles to overcome. For instance, the company is currently valued at $14 billion, which would be its biggest investment to date. Also, Perplexity is already in advanced talks with Samsung to integrate some of its features into Samsung's ecosystem. Source

However, press the Recents tab and you'll notice how all of the calls have been moved inside rectangular fields with rounded corners. Previously, Recent Calls was just one long list of names and avatars. The dial pad is also unchanged except for the background which has rounded corners on the top of the pad. The suggested phone numbers above the pad are inside rectangular fields with rounded corners after the redesign arrives. New Material 3 Expressive design for the Google Phone app. | Image credit-PhoneArena The All, Missed, Contacts, Non-Spam, and Spam filters have changed and also use the rectangular fields to provide a shortcut allowing you to send a message to that person, or view your call history with that person. With the redesign, Google added a shortcut that places you one tap away from making a video call to a particular contact or someone you've recently been in touch with. The Settings menu for the Google Phone app also features the containers that are prevalent all over the redesigned app. Current design for the Google Phone app. | Image credit-PhoneArena When you get an incoming call, you can swipe left to decline the call or swipe right to accept it. The picture of the caller or his profile icon will rotate inside a scallop-shaped design until you accept or decline the call. The circular buttons turn into pill-shaped buttons that change into rounded rectangles when pressed. The "end call" button now stands out more, is wider, and is more prominent. The redesign requires beta version 180 of the Google Phone app and while I am running that version of the Phone app on my Pixel 6 Pro, it is a server-side update and I was unable to get the new look to surface. It is a more modern design of an overlooked app and looks great. When it does appear on my Pixel 6 Pro , I will update this story. Secure your connection now at a bargain price!
