No longer ‘forever'? Wu-Tang Clan hint at breakup with final world tour

The Guardian24-02-2025

After more than 30 years of music, during which they created an entire martial mythology as well as some of the greatest hip-hop records of all time, Wu-Tang Clan have signalled a possible end to the group.
They have announced 'the start of their final tour', entitled Wu-Tang Forever: The Final Chamber, which will initially visit 27 US cities, beginning 6 June in Baltimore. Bandleader RZA has alluded to later worldwide dates, saying in a statement:
This is a special moment for me and all my Wu brothers to run around the globe together one more time and spread the Wu swag, music, and culture. Most importantly to touch our fans and those who have supported us throughout the years. On this tour we're playing songs we've never played before to our audience and me and our production team have designed a Wu-Tang show unlike anything you've ever seen.
If these do prove to be the group's final shows, it will bring the curtain down on a wildly creative – and at times fractious – career for the nine-strong group.
They formed in Staten Island in 1992, and with production by RZA, the group delivered their debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) the following year, telling gritty stories filled with references to martial arts and comic books.
Their supersized second album Wu-Tang Forever topped the charts in the US and UK, while third album The W contained some of their biggest hits including Gravel Pit and Protect Ya Neck (The Jump Off). Three more studio albums followed, plus a curio release: Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, an album released as a single copy, bought for $2m by pharmaceuticals tycoon Martin Shkreli in 2015.
Some of the members' solo albums, such as Ghostface Killah's Supreme Clientele and Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, are also regarded as pinnacles of the hip-hop genre. They lost one of their most distinctive members in 2004, with the death of Ol' Dirty Bastard to an accidental drug overdose, and corralling the MCs together hasn't always been easy – there have been a number of other releases with one or more members missing.
This April brings the release of Black Samson, an album with all nine members together again, though it is not an official Wu-Tang Clan album and is instead co-credited to producer Mathematics. The group also put on a united front – for most dates at least – at a Las Vegas concert residency held in 2024.
Support on the US tour will come from Run the Jewels, the hip-hop duo of El-P and Killer Mike.

Blueprints by Marcus Du Sautoy: Every artist is actually just a good mathematician

Blueprints by Marcus Du Sautoy (Fourth Estate £22, 304pp) The pairing of art and mathematics, as Marcus Du Sautoy writes on the first page of his absorbing new book, would seem for many 'synonymous with chalk and cheese. A contradiction in terms.' Maths inhabits a realm of cold logic; the arts, one of emotional expression. Yet Du Sautoy will have none of this. Maths has its own aesthetic. He quotes approvingly the mathematician G.H. Hardy, who once wrote that, 'Beauty is the first test: there is no permanent place in this world for ugly mathematics.' Recent research has shown that, when mathematicians encounter maths they consider beautiful, a part of their brain lights up. It's the same part activated in non-mathematicians looking at art or listening to music that they appreciate. Du Sautoy contends that the fundamental structures underpinning artistic creativity are mathematical. He calls them blueprints. Artists may not always know it but they are 'secret mathematicians'. The strong connections between music and maths have frequently been acknowledged. Two of the greatest classical composers were obsessed by numbers. According to Du Sautoy, Mozart's opera The Magic Flute is 'dripping with maths'. The repeated use of groups of three in the story is only the most obvious of many numerical patterns the composer employed. J.S. Bach had his own obsession – with the number 14 – and wove it everywhere into his music. However, it is not just music that is shaped by mathematics. So too are other arts. In architecture, the villas designed in the 16th century by Andrea Palladio have been described as 'frozen music'. They could equally be called 'frozen mathematics', since they make ingenious use of geometric theory. In the 20th century, the tower block known as L'Unite d'Habitation, designed by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, has measurements based on a sequence of numbers he devised. Each number in the sequence is the sum of the two previous numbers. This is familiar to mathematicians, who know it as the Fibonacci sequence. Du Sautoy finds his blueprints wherever he looks in creative endeavour. In the visual arts, he notes that the abstract works of Jackson Pollock were examples of an important mathematical structure only identified properly in the 20th century. Pollock was painting 'fractals', a word describing a geometric pattern that arbitrarily repeats – it was not coined until two decades after the artist's death. Recently, a group of supposed Pollock canvases were shown to be fakes because they were not fractals. In literature, Du Sautoy explores the hidden games Shakespeare played with numbers. Blueprints is not always an easy read for non-mathematicians. But it's a constantly surprising one in its determination to show us that works of art we love are 'often pieces of mathematics in disguise'.

RiRi sizzles in one of her own bikinis during photo shoot

Rihanna looked sensational in a red-print bra and panty set from her Savage X Fenty range. The singer, 37 is pregnant with her third child with her partner A$AP Rocky, 36, and she deftly posed to hide any glimpse of her bump during the photo shoot. She revealed she was expecting her third child with A$AP when she debuted her baby bump at the Met Gala in early May. Rihanna - who shares sons RZA, two, and Riot, 21 months, with A$AP - has been busy exploring the sights of Cannes with the rapper recently. Earlier this month, Rihanna insisted her new album won't be delayed too much by her pregnancy. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the singer was asked if the album - which has been dubbed 'R9' - will be 'put on pause even longer'. She insisted: 'No, maybe a couple of videos.' Fans have been waiting nine years for the follow-up to 2016's Anti, but Rihanna has assured them that her plans are still in place. Rihanna also revealed she isn't 'too overwhelmed' by her pregnancy, although there was some initial shock. She added: 'I'm good! I'm shockingly feeling ok, and not too overwhelmed at the moment.' While details on her new album are few and far between, Rihanna recently offered a teaser of what fans can expect. She told Harper's BAZAAR magazine in February: 'I've been in the studio the whole eight years. But it didn't hit me. I was searching for it. 'I went through phases of what I wanted to do. ''This kind of album, not that album''. I know it's not going to be anything that anybody expects. 'And it's not going to be commercial or radio, digestible. It's going to be where my artistry deserves to be right now. I feel like I've finally cracked it, girl!' Rihanna insisted there was 'no genre' for the album, and she has been determined to make the next batch of songs something 'matching [her] evolution.' This summer Rihanna serves as a voice actor and producer for The Smurfs, a film based on the loveable blue characters. Rhianna plays the iconic Smurfette in the upcoming movie. She dropped a new song Friend of Mine this week, the first from the soundtrack to the movie. Friend Of Mine debuted at No. 72 on the singles charts, a disappointing start for the singer's first new song in nine years. Rihanna hasn't seen a track of hers peak that low in almost a decade. The last time it did, was in March 2106 when Consideration, her collab with SZA debuted at number 88.
