Asean set to adopt AI safety network at 47th summit in 2026
He said this represents a crucial step toward institutionalising AI safety, ethics, and governance principles as endorsed by ASEAN Digital Ministers while supporting the implementation of the ASEAN Responsible AI Roadmap.
'The establishment of ASEAN AI Safe aligns with global calls for an international network to tackle AI safety risks through collaboration among governments, academia and industry.
'ASEAN AI Safe underscores the commitment to responsible AI development and looks forward to the network's formal establishment by early 2026,' he said during the special address at the ASEAN Artificial Intelligence (AI) Malaysia Summit 2025 yesterday.
At the event, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched a Malaysian home-grown AI known as 'ILMU', built by YTL AI Labs, in partnership with Universiti Malaya.
Kao emphasised that despite ongoing volatility and uncertainty in global trade, the world is witnessing a transformative growth of AI in reshaping every aspect of economies, societies and daily lives.
Hence, he said, the first ever ASEAN AI Summit has provided a timely opportunity to deepen regional cooperation and build strategic trust around a shared vision with innovation and inclusive development to guide the collective journey into a new era of digital transformation.
Kao said AI is expected to contribute a gross domestic product of 10 to 18 per cent, equivalent to nearly US$1 trillion by 2030.
Besides, he said this year, ASEAN is prioritising on the ASEAN Digital Economic Framework Agreement (DEFA) to build on the regional digital ecosystem, which could potentially double its projection to US$2 trillion by 2030. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Bernama): Bangladesh is seeking Malaysia's influence, particularly its role as Asean Chair, to rally international efforts to address the prolonged Rohingya refugee crisis in the country. Chief Adviser to Bangladesh's government Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus said Malaysia's experience in hosting Rohingya refugees, coupled with its leadership position in Asean, places it in a unique position to push for a comprehensive regional solution. "We are hoping that Malaysia will put its influence in the whole negotiation to make sure that we can overcome this problem,' he told the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) in a special interview before concluding his official visit to Malaysia. The interview with the 2006 Nobel Prize laureate was led by Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, Editor of International News Service Voon Miaw Ping, and Assistant Editor of Economic News Service Kisho Kumari Sucedaram. Yunus also warned that the refugee crisis has deepened amid ongoing fighting in Myanmar's Rakhine state between the Arakan Army and government forces, forcing fresh waves of Rohingyas fleeing across the border into Bangladesh. "In the last 18 months alone, 150,000 new Rohingyas have arrived, in addition to the 1.2 million already in Bangladesh. "It becomes more and more acute. And worst of it, the US cut off all the funds to maintain them. So that is a huge problem for us,' he said. The Chief Adviser said three international conferences on the Rohingya will be convened in the coming months to seek a sustainable solution. The first is scheduled in Cox's Bazar at the end of this month, coinciding with the eighth anniversary of Bangladesh assuming responsibility for hosting Rohingya refugees fleeing hostilities in their home state. The second high-level meeting will take place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in September, while the third is planned for year-end in Doha, Qatar. Repatriation efforts have made little progress, further complicated by the ongoing armed conflict in Myanmar since 2021. The protracted humanitarian crisis continues to affect not only Bangladesh but also several Asean member states, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. Malaysia, though not a signatory to the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention or its 1967 Protocol, continues to temporarily host nearly 150,000 Rohingya refugees on a humanitarian basis. Don't play cops-and-judges over Jalur Gemilang issues, Fahmi tells Malaysians
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — The public has been reminded not to resort to vigilantism or unlawful actions against any party committing offences linked to the Jalur Gemilang flag, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said. All matters involving investigations, prosecutions and court decisions must be left entirely to the authorities, Fahmi said following a reminder issued by the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) yesterday. 'Don't act as the police, lawyers and judge (as) it's wrong, leave it to the police to investigate, leave it to the AGC to prosecute and leave it to the courts to make a decision,' he said after the launch of the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Flag 2025 campaign at the Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) Kampus Bahasa Melayu here today. Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (strategic communications and creative industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin; Information Department director-general Julina Johan and IPG Kampus Bahasa Melayu director Dr Masitah Mohammad Yusof also attended the launch. He said he was given to understand that there were individuals called up by the police after a rally that was held to 'teach' certain parties, but further action will be left to the authorities. Fahmi also invited Malaysians to play their part in resolving any issues related to the Jalur Gemilang without resorting to any provocation. 'As Malaysians, we also can play our part. If we see a Jalur Gemilang that has fallen, we should raise it back up. If it has faded, we replace it with a new one. If it's improperly flown, we correct it with our own hands. Indonesia to begin building Nusantara's legislative and judicial zones in October
NUSANTARA, Aug 16 — The Indonesian government has announced a plan to commence the construction of legislative and judicial zones in new capital Nusantara in October this year, marking the next phase in the relocation of the country's seat of government from Jakarta. Development of the two zones is part of the second phase of construction in Nusantara, a project aimed at reducing pressure on overcrowded and sinking Jakarta. Speaking to journalists on Saturday, Head of the Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) Basuki Hadimuljono said preparations for the two zones, located in the core government area (KIPP), have been completed. 'Construction will start between the end of October and early November this year,' hesaid during a visit to North Penajam Paser District in East Kalimantan, where the new capital city is being developed. The KIPP already includes the presidential palace and ministerial offices, construction of which began in 2022. The new zones will house the legislature and judiciary, key to the full relocation of government functions from Jakarta. The eastern section of the KIPP will be designated for the House of Representatives (DPR), the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD). The western side will be allocated for the Supreme Court (MA) and other judicial institutions, Basuki said. The Public Works Ministry has allocated 8.1 trillion rupiah (US$520 million) for the development. Of that, 2.9 trillion rupiah has been earmarked for road access to the zones, with contracts awarded this month. Construction is expected to take 660 days. Basuki stressed that the legislative and judicial facilities are critical to the official transfer of the capital. 'We should not focus only on executive institutions, because operational legislative and judicial bodies are just as important,' he added. — Bernama-ANTARA
