Brodie Croft's late try seals Leeds' statement victory at Leigh

The Guardian20 hours ago
Leigh Leopards and Leeds Rhinos delivered a thrilling Super League contest befitting of any high stakes, playoff encounter that the pair may square off in later this year, with Brad Arthur's side edging a magnificent night of entertainment.
Both sides began the night still with a realistic chance of overtaking the reigning champions, Wigan, in second place – with a top-two finish bringing with it huge benefits come the playoffs next month. In fact, Leigh knew victory here would move them second before the Warriors' clash against Warrington on Fridaytonight.
But Leeds are now firmly in the race for second once again after they underlined their title credentials to end Leigh's four-match winning run and catapult themselves back into the conversation for the Grand Final.
Arthur will decide over the weekend whether to sign a new contract with Leeds for 2026 that was tabled this week, and this performance from his side against a fellow title contender may well have convinced him his future should remain in England next year rather than returning to Australia.
He has transformed Leeds in little over a year in charge from a side bereft of quality and confidence, and who had finished eighth in each of the past two seasons to a team that are now a legitimate threat to make it to Old Trafford and secure a ninth Super League title.
The Rhinos overturned an early eight-point deficit to finish as worthy winners to move to within just one point of Leigh and two behind Wigan with six rounds remaining. The game, end-to-end throughout, was never decided until Brodie Croft's late try three minutes from full-time.
The Leopards were much the stronger of the two sides in the opening quarter, and were good value for the lead they had established by the midway point of the first half. Tries from Umyla Hanley and Keanan Brand were no less than what Leigh deserved, with Leeds struggling to cope in the early stages.
But a superb 40-20 from Jake Connor shifted the momentum decisively the way of the Rhinos. From what felt like their first real attacking position of the evening they halved the deficit courtesy of a sublime solo effort from Lachie Miller.
A Leigh error then afforded Leeds the chance to attack again, with Sam Lisone forcing his way over the line and giving Connor a simple conversion to kick the first goal at the night. That was ultimately the difference at the break, with Connor making it 10-8.
The Rhinos then extended that lead shortly after half-time as a wonderful kick from Connor teed up James Bentley to score under the posts, giving the half-back another easy conversion to put real daylight between the sides for the first time.
At that stage, Leeds looked well placed to go on and run out comfortable victors. But this Leigh side, who have matured immensely in 2025, were never likely to fold so easily. They would set up a grandstand finish when Brand scored his second, and Gareth O'Brien converted from wide to reduce the gap to just two once again.
Leigh certainly had chances late on to snatch victory, with Bailey Hodgson having a try ruled out and Josh Charnley spilling a golden opportunity with five minutes to go. That was enough to let Leeds off the hook, and they settled matters as a wonderful break from Miller freed Croft to seal another statement win for the Rhinos.

Rugby League legend Micky Higham diagnosed with cancer for second time

A rugby league star is swapping the pitch for the pavement to raise funds for his cancer treatment - after it returned for a second time. Micky Higham, who won a Super League title and three Challenge Cups as a player during his career, was first told he had cancer in 2022 after finding a lump under his arm. The former Warrington, Wigan and Leigh player, was diagnosed with Stage 3 melanoma, which had spread to his lymph nodes, and after surgery and immunotherapy he received the all-clear. But, just three years later, the dad-of-two found another lump in his lower back, with scans revealing a 10cm growth - where tests confirmed the cancer had returned aggressively, spreading to other muscles. In June Micky and his family were told he has Stage 4 widespread metastasized cancer. Micky now hopes to get treatment overseas after being told he was unsuccessful for a UK-based clinical trial. He is undergoing 12 weeks of immunotherapy at the Christie, but says he wants to give himself the best possible chances. His family are now fundraising in order to get the treatment abroad, with the money being split between his family, his treatment and cancer charities. He will be embarking on a walk between Leigh and Salford on 24 August, alongside a range of other fundraising activities planned over the coming months. "I'm doing a little bit tough at the minute, got to be honest, the first time I got the melanoma it was all new and I didn't have much pain and I'd like to think I got through that quite well," Micky said. "But this time it's come back, and it's spread to where it has, and I'm in a bit of pain and especially the second time round you just start thinking a little deeper than previously. "So I'm doing it tough but I've always had the quite positive attitude, I'm quite mentally strong to get things done and when challenges come along I meet them head on and I feel like I'm doing that and staying positive." Micky said the cancer has spread to up to eight areas areas after he discovered the initial lump, but added "it was a really positive sign" that all were in muscles and not organs. "I think when someone says to you Stage 4 and it's spread you automatically think 'wow', but you can't think like that, it's spread but we're confident we'll get it under control and get it sorted," he added. Speaking of his two sons - both rugby league players - and wife Kate, he said he was determined to remain positive for them. In response to the news, Leigh Leopards held a collection and an applause at the ninth minute - for Micky's shirt number - which he says "caught me off guard".

Burnley sign Armando Broja from Chelsea on permanent deal

Armando Broja has left boyhood club Chelsea after joining promoted Burnley for an undisclosed fee on a five-year contract. Broja moved to Chelsea from Tottenham aged eight in 2009 before progressing through the Blues' academy all the way up to the first-team ranks, where he made 38 appearances and scored nine goals. However, Broja – an English-born striker who represents Albania, the country where his parents are from – has had several loan spells away from west London, most recently at Everton last season. The Toffees decided against making the transfer permanent but with Chelsea bolstering their forward line with the big-money signings of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro this summer, Broja has decided to move on. The 23-year-old, who has also played for Southampton and Fulham in the Premier League, said: 'I am really excited to be here as a Burnley player. 'It's a really positive time to be joining this club ahead of the start of the new Premier League season. I can't wait to get going. 'I'm feeling good, I'm ready and I'm excited about the challenge of playing for this club. I can tell you all that I will be giving my all every time I pull on the famous claret shirt.' Burnley have also raided Stamford Bridge to sign Bashir Humphreys and Lesley Ugochukwu in the off-season as they look to strengthen ahead of their return to the top flight.

Match details What: Leicester vs Sheffield Wednesday, Championship Where: King Power Stadium When: 4.30pm, Sunday August 10 How to watch: Sky Sports Football Leicester to add to Wednesday's woes Clubs that are relegated from the Premier League are usually among the favourites to be promoted from the Championship, but that's not the case for Leicester City, who face the threat of a points reduction for breaching PSR rules. As yet, the only addition to new manager Marti Cifuentes' squad has been veteran goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, although the number of departures suggests they will have to strengthen before the transfer window closes. Jamie Vardy has left the club after his contract expired, while the likes of Conor Coady and Wilfred Ndidi have been sold, with James Justin and Bilal El Khannouss set to follow. If Leicester are feeling sorry for themselves, they only have to look in Sheffield Wednesday's direction to gain some perspective. The Owls' manager Henrik Pedersen has just 15 senior players to work with, due to club employees having not been paid for the last month. This fixture looked in danger of being cancelled at one point after Wednesday pulled out of their friendly against Burnley last week. With the South Yorkshire club so ill-prepared for the new season, Leicester have enough quality remaining in their squad to take advantage. The hosts beat Fiorentina 2-0 in their most recent friendly and I'm backing them to improve on that margin of victory, with -2 goals in the handicap market. Ayew can thrive in leading role With Vardy gone and no summer signings having been made, a concern for Leicester is where their goals are going to come from. They still have Patson Daka, who they signed for £23million in 2021, but he has never been prolific for Leicester, even when they were last in the Championship during the 2023-24 campaign. One man who has stepped up to take the responsibility is Jordan Ayew and the Ghanaian looks set to lead the line for Leicester on Sunday. Ayew has scored three times in pre-season and was on target in last weekend's victory against Fiorentina. With Wednesday likely to be fielding a threadbare defence, the former Crystal Palace forward looks decent value to find the net again.
