Chelsea: Enzo Maresca reveals how Joao Pedro has turned Blues into title challengers

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has revealed which of Joao Pedro's qualities will help the Blues summit the Premier League. A win over Nottingham Forest on the final day of last season saw Chelsea secure a fourth-place finish in the Premier League, 15 points adrift of champions Liverpool, and Maresca is ready to close the gap in the new campaign. Chelsea regularly struggled to break down low-block defences last season. For Maresca, Pedro's close control in tight spaces will help the Blues unlock more stubborn back lines. Speaking on the Men in Blazers Show, he said: '[Pedro] has quality. In the last third, he has lots of quality that we lack a little bit. 'He has lots of quality in the box, especially against teams that are low block. We need that quality in the small spaces, and Joao gives us that.' Maresca believes Pedro's addition has helped establish Chelsea as genuine title contenders: 'I think one year ago we were very far from the ones that dominate English football, but I think now we are quite close. 'We can continue to improve, get closer, and try to compete for that (the Premier League title).' Pedro is one of four new attacking arrivals at Chelsea this summer, and is not the only one to have made a fast start to life in royal blue. Estevao has stolen the show in his first two appearances, scoring on debut against Bayer Leverkusen and winning a penalty in a four-goal rout of AC Milan. But Maresca is not putting pressure on the 18-year-old to carry his side to a title-winning season, instead saying he needs time to settle: 'We are going to try to help him, no rush, no pressure. He needs time, he needs to adapt. 'The most important thing for him now is to arrive here, find a house, bring the family, be happy, and slowly, slowly, he is going to help us, for sure.' After winning both of their pre-season outings, Chelsea will host Crystal Palace in their first Premier League fixture of the season.

Arsenal bizarrely get the fireworks treatment as Google celebrates meaningless pre-season Emirates Cup victory

Gunners host annual pre-season fixture Prevailed against Athletic Club in 2025 Without major honour since 2020 FA Cup Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? The event is hosted by the Gunners on an annual basis. While a trophy is lifted by the winning team at Emirates Stadium, the game in question is considered to be a pre-season friendly. There are no wild celebrations to be found and any successes are not usually added to the victorious team's roll of honour. Google does, however, appear to consider Emirates Cup triumphs to be worthy of note. THE BIGGER PICTURE The tech giants add firework displays to their landing screen whenever a suitable term is searched. England's Lionesses recently got that treatment after successfully defending their European Championship crown. Winners of the Champions League, Premier League and World Cup get the same celebratory display, with fans around the world left slightly puzzled by Arsenal's 3-0 victory over La Liga opposition being recognised. DID YOU KNOW? Viktor Gyokeres opened his goal account for the Gunners against Athletic Club, with Mikel Arteta's side - who have finished as runners-up in the English top flight across three successive campaigns - hoping that a title charge is on the cards for 2025-26. WHAT NEXT FOR ARSENAL? If they were to claim the Premier League title, for the first time since the fabled Invincibles of 2003-04, then Google will have every right to bring the fireworks out again. Arsenal have captured a major honour of any kind since the 2020 FA Cup - with only a couple of Community Shields being picked up across the last five years.

Liverpool FC News: Arne Slot uncovers NEW Martin Zubimendi

Ever since took on the responsibility of becoming the team's No. 6, it has been difficult to find anyone in the squad who can deliver a similar kind of performance as him. The Dutchman truly is a one off and Liverpool fans now know more than ever how important he is. 🔴 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the away range TODAY LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! As last season started to wind down, the team's efforts slowly declined, which was inherently linked in part to Gravenberch's fitness issues, alongside the Premier League title nearing ever closer. 🔴 Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister have attempted to play as the team's deepest-lying midfielder before and neither have been as successful as Gravenberch, although in Sunday's Community Shield loss, we got a glimpse of someone who delivered our best effort yet at covering the Dutchman. Jones as the Zubimendi replacement? Before the Spaniard joined Arsenal this summer, Martin Zubimendi was a highly-regarded figure on Merseyside and we all hoped he'd become our defensive midfielder, before we looked internally. Of course, that didn't work out and fortunately Gravenberch was able to step up to the plate, although no one could do what he could do - we still needed a Zubimendi-type player in the team. As mentioned, many have tried and failed to meet the heights of the Gravenberch, although in the loss to Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon, Curtis Jones came pretty close with his latest effort. In a 71 minute performance, he completed all 58 of his passes, made three accurate long-balls (100%), won three of his six duels and made an interception. It was an all-round masterclass.
