In poll-bound Bihar, PM to flag off export of locomotives to Guinea

PM Narendra Modi (File photo) NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to flag off export of the first locomotive from Marhowrah factory in Saran for Guinea in West Africa on Friday, signalling the NDA govts' — both at Centre and state — thrust on accelerating economic activities in poll-bound Bihar. Railway ministry officials said that 150 Make in India Evolution Series (ES43ACmi) locomotives for SimFer's Simandou iron ore project in Guinea worth more than Rs 3,000 crore are being manufactured. Simandou will be Africa's largest mining project. 'In the current financial year, 37 locomotives will be exported, another 82 locomotives will be shipped out in 2026-27 and the remaining 31 locomotives in the third year,' said an official. Though the Marhowrah diesel locomotive factory (DLF) was announced by then railway minister Lalu Prasad, it remained inactive. Spread over 70 acres, the factory was established in 2018 to indigenously manufacture 1,000 state-of-the-art locomotives. The annual production capacity of the factory is over 100 locomotives. The contract to export the locomotives was awarded to Wabtec Locomotive Private Ltd, a joint venture between Indian Railways and US-based Wabtec Corporation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo All these locomotives will have AC cabs. Each locomotive will have a single cab. Two locomotives together can carry the load of 100 wagons with maximum permissible speed. 'For manufacturing of these locomotives, three types of tracks — broad gauge, standard gauge and Cape guage have been laid in Marhowrah premises,' said another railway official. Officials said with the Indian Railway network achieving full electrification, there is a huge scope for exporting diesel locos to countries where there is demand. 'It's an opportunity to increase our export of locos that match the best standard across the globe. For Bihar, it will be a big milestone,' said an official.

Delhi: Slum dwellers in search of a new home after 300 shanties razed in Ashok Vihar

'How can 10 people stay in a one-bedroom flat?' asked Raj, 20, sharing his plight as he carried a gas cylinder in one hand and a bag with clothes in another. His jhuggi was one of the 300 slums demolished on Monday at Jailorwala Bagh in Northwest Delhi's Ashok Vihar by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). 'My parents, my brother, and I are moving into a flat nearby where a family we know is already staying, but we will have to look for a place to stay tomorrow,' he said while rushing to make arrangements. A school dropout, he makes cloth labels at a nearby warehouse. Many in the area, who have been displaced, have decided to move to nearby areas with affordable accommodations like Wazirpur, Jahangirpuri, Azadpur, and Lal Bagh. 'But even rents in these places have been increased by landlords, seeing that hundreds of people are looking for a house,' said Suraj Kumar (32), a local. 'The monthly rent for a flat I was looking at was Rs 3,500. Now, the landlord has increased it to Rs 4,500,' added Kumar, who works as a delivery partner with a food delivery firm. The demolition comes five months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over keys of flats in the Swabhiman Apartments, located right behind the slum cluster, to residents of the Jailorwala Bagh for relocation under the Capital's 2015 slum rehabilitation policy. According to DDA, 1,078 families were eligible for rehabilitation in the Swabhiman Apartments, while 558 were ineligible to get a flat. 'The demolition has been carried out on June 16 of the jhuggi structures where dwellers have been allotted flats and of the ineligible persons, except those who have been granted stay by the Delhi High Court,' an official statement read. On the Swabhiman Apartments, DDA said, 'The project is located on DDA's land measuring 34,594.74 sqm with a total construction cost of Rs. 421 crore, excluding land cost. The eligible dwellers have been comfortably living in these flats, which have all modern civic facilities. Each flat with a carpet area of 31 sqm consists of 1 living room, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, a kitchen, and a balcony. The construction cost of each flat is Rs 25 lakh. These flats have been given at a highly subsidised beneficiary contribution of Rs 1.41 lakh.' To qualify for a flat, slum dwellers were required to prove that they have been living in the jhuggis since 2015 by showing their name in voter lists and possessing any one of the 12 documents (like electricity bill, driving license, among others) prescribed in the policy. Of the 558 ineligible dwellers, the Delhi High Court granted a stay against demolition to about 250 households. The remaining shanties were demolished on Monday. Mithun, who said he mobilised 250 slum dwellers to move to the High Court and get a stay, claimed that some of those shanties were also demolished on Monday. 'A survey was conducted by a third-party agency, which made a lot of errors,' he said. 'Even if DDA does not demolish our shanties, how will we stay in the middle of all this rubble? How will our children live in the midst of all this? The stay of the court means nothing now… we will have to move only,' said a woman sitting nearby.

5 Days Before Pune Bridge Collapsed, Order To Build New One Was Passed

Mumbai: The collapse of the 30-year-old pedestrian bridge in a Pune village that claimed four lives, came just five days after a work order was issued for the construction of a new bridge. Had the work order - issued after years of complaints from the villagers -been on time, last week's tragedy would not have taken place, say the locals. The bridge, built for farmers on the Indrayani river 30 years ago, had become a selfie point in no time. Though its capacity was no more than four to five pedestrians at a time, it was carrying dozens of tourists and two-wheelers. Alarmed, the locals tried to prod the government into action and at the same time, warn the tourists. But neither course of action succeeded. Around 3 pm on Sunday, the bridge came down, claiming four lives. Many others were pulled out of the river in time. Sources said the demand for a new bridge was placed seven years ago and the approval of Rs 8 crore was also received. In 2017, local BJP MLA Digambar Bhegade was the first to demand a new bridge in place of the accident-hit bridge. After completing the inspection and design work, approval of Rs 8 crore for the new bridge was received in 2024 -- seven years after the demand. But the work order was issued on June 10 -- a delay that many blame on officials. "The process could have been faster. It took a lot of time. We were serious, but the officials were not serious. Also, this is a military area, there are always restrictions here," said Ravindra Bhegade, a local leader of the BJP. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said he has asked the local officials for an "update". "Approval has been received to build the bridge at a cost of Rs 8 crore. I have asked the collector for an update, he will give detailed information," he said.
