Will Smith discovers surprising roots to town in Wales

Independent21 hours ago
Watch as Will Smith is ecstatic after he found out his connections to Wales, laughing as he calls himself 'Welsh Smith'.
Appearing on BBC Radio Wales on Saturday (11 July), the actor and singer was left gobsmacked after host Lucy Owen revealed that Smith's hometown of Wynnefield, Pennsylvania is named after a Welsh Physician, Dr Thomas Wynne.
'So I'm Welsh! I'm Welsh, basically. That's what we're saying,' Smith exclaimed. "Yes, Will! This is what I'm trying to say. You are Welsh, and we are claiming you,' Owen responded.
Smith also joked that he would change his name in light of the discovery.
'That might be my new name,' Smith laughed. 'Welsh Smith. I'm gonna be Welsh Smith.'

Wynne Evans jokes about the 'dark side' in latest post as he plugs new radio show after leaving the BBC following Strictly controversy

Wynne Evans joked about leaving the 'dark side' in his latest post plugging his new radio show on Thursday. The Strictly contestant and opera singer's career has been left struggling in the last six months after he made a controversial joke during his time preparing for the Strictly tour in January. He used a vile sexual innuendo and was also caught up in a 'wandering hand' incident with dance partner Katya Jones, who seemed to remove his arm from her lower waist on the show. After the BBC launched an investigation into his conduct, bosses decided not to renew his radio contract for his show. Wynne has now launched a new daily radio show called The Wynne Evans Show, broadcasting live every weekday from 9am to 12pm on his website, following his departure from BBC Radio Wales. He was promoting on his Instagram Story on Thursday as he shared an image of this show graphics along with the slogan above which read: 'Even he's left the dark side.' 'This show is for my community – The Wynners – who've supported me through thick and thin,' Wynne previously said. 'It's a space where we can come together every morning, share a laugh, play the music we love, and just be ourselves.' It comes after last week Wynne confirmed a brand new business venture amid fears he's split from his new fiancée Liz Brookes. He took to Instagram to share the news that he has joined up with a restaurant in his hometown. The Welsh House Carmarthen shared a video of Wynne to their Instagram confirming that the former Strictly Come Dancing star is joining as a partner in the business. In the clip, Wynne confirmed the venue would be renamed The Welsh House by Wynne and will see him cook 'MasterChef' style dishes. After his BBC Wales radio show was cut, Wynne also confirmed he will be hosting a brand new programme from the restaurant and bar. Proudly showing off his hometown, he revealed: 'One thing that is changing is The Welsh House, it's going to become The Welsh House by Wynne! 'I promise you it will have MasterChef dishes on the menu, it's going to have a warm welcome and I want you to come and see me, OK? The Strictly contestant and opera singer's career has been left struggling in the last six months after he made a controversial joke during his time preparing for the Strictly tour in January (seen with partner Katya Jones) 'It's going to be the home of the radio show as well, so get in touch with us, make your bookings and I'll see you soon - I better get cooking!' In a caption, The Welsh House added: 'We're thrilled to welcome Wynne Evans, iconic Welsh opera singer, presenter, and legend as a new partner in our Carmarthen family! 'A proud local and passionate champion of Welsh food, drink, and culture, Wynne brings unmatched energy and love for the town to help us create something truly special. Big things are coming… The Welsh House by Wynne.' The Sun claimed Wynne is opening the restaurant to 'capitalise' on his 2023 Celebrity MasterChef win and to 'distract' himself amid reports of his separation from Liz. 'He's opening a restaurant focusing on Welsh food to distract from the Liz separation,' a source told the publication. 'He paid the Welsh House to take over their existing space.' 'He is trying to capitalise on his MasterChef win apparently,' they added. It is not Wynne's latest side hustle as he also recently started work as an Airbnb host, leasing out a property in Llansteffan - eight miles away from his hometown. MailOnline contacted Wynne's representatives for comment. In recent weeks, Wynne sparked fears of a split from his new fiancée Liz after deleting his engagement post from Instagram and unfollowing her. MailOnline also revealed Liz no longer follows Wynne, who only proposed to the events company boss last month. He got down on one knee during a romantic trip to Morocco and documented the gesture on Instagram, posting snaps of him proposing and a close-up of Liz's ring. He wrote: 'Big news… I got engaged! 'This weekend in Morocco, somewhere between the couscous, the camels, and me limping around the souks like a man with no spatial awareness, I proposed to Liz — and she said yes! (No take-backs, I've checked.) 'She's clever, she's kind, she's got excellent taste in men. 'Absolutely no idea how I pulled that off, but here we are! Feeling very lucky, very happy, and just a tiny bit smug.' However, the picture has now mysteriously disappeared from his account, as have any mentions of his fiancée. Wynne was previously married to wife seven years, Tanwen - the mother of his two kids - but they split in 2016. Wynne and Liz then met in 2024 shortly before his stint on the BBC1 dancing show, and Liz was often sat in the audience during the live shows. After his BBC Wales show was cut, Wynne announced that he would be launching a new radio show - which he has now confirmed he will record from The Welsh House. In May, he wrote on Instagram: 'The Wynne Evans Show is coming back, live every day from 9am - 12pm on a new app, on Alexa and Google (we don't have to say 'smart speaker' anymore!) and at 'This is our next adventure. And I need you more than ever. We will have great music, my question of the day, the mystery voice, your soundtrack stories and so much more, because we have each other again.' Wynne's show wasn't renewed after it emerged he used sexual innuendo during the Strictly Live Tour and was also caught up in a 'wandering hand' incident with dance partner Katya Jones, who seemed to remove his arm from her lower waist on the show. After the BBC launched an investigation into his conduct, bosses decided not to renew his radio contract for his show. Then, it was revealed that his travelogue series with Joanna Page was cancelled after just one series. The programme originally aired in February and March of this year and was placed on ice when Wynne was dropped from the Strictly tour before returning to screens. An insider told The Sun: 'Once the first series was slapped on ice, there was always a huge question mark hanging over the prospect of a second outing. 'Only now has the BBC publicly confirmed it won't be returning. 'It means that Wynne has no TV show or radio show with the Beeb, and effectively marks the end of their relationship.'

Emmerdale legend signs new contract ahead of major new storyline that will change the village forever

AN EMMERDALE legend has signed a new contract to take her into next year alongside a huge storyline for her character. Actress Claire King has put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep her on the show for another year. 2 The star has played Kim Tate on and off since 1989, before quitting in 1999 and then making a bombshell comeback in 2018. Kim quickly re-established herself in the village as owner of Home Farm and has had some hugely dramatic storylines since returning. And this year will be no different with a massive one kicking off soon. A source said: 'Bosses love Claire and they are delighted that she's going nowhere. 'Kim Tate is one of the soap all time greats and it's only right that she has a massive storyline. 'It's going to delve into who Kim is and where she's come from and see her rediscover that grit that made her Kim Tate. 'She's going to stop at nothing to get what she wants - and make a few more enemies in the process as well as potentially changing the village forever." Viewers watched today as Kim suffered a blow when she discovered her new man Eddie was in fact the villainous Dr Crowley. He was blackmailing Joe Tate into stealing Kim's money for himself - and had planned to drug her into paralysis and take her assets. However when he tried to put his plan into place, Kim outwitted him and sent him packing - potentially for good. Emmerdale villain returns to torture Joe Tate in grisly scenes She told him: 'If you even try to mess with us again, they'll never find your body. Nothing personal, it's purely business.' An Emmerdale spokeswoman declined to comment. First appearing in 1989, Kim Tate (Claire King) is an iconic Emmerdale character. Here's a look at some of her biggest storylines over the years. MARRIAGE TO FRANK TATE Kim has been married three times in the soap, but her first, volatile pairing was with Frank Tate (Norman Bowler) They were an on-screen partnership for almost a decade - including divorcing and remarrying. However, Frank ultimately suffered a fatal heart attack, brought on by Kim's return to the village after being presumed dead. During the marriage, Kim had affairs with Neil Kincaid (Brian Deacon) and Dave Glover (Ian Kelsey). FAKING HER OWN DEATH Kim disappeared from the village in February 1997. A few days later, Frank identified a woman found dead at the wheel of her car as Kim. However, everyone was in for a shock after Kim revealed she was still alive - and the full extent of her plan. While she'd fled to the Caribbean, Kim had paid a lookalike prostitute to drive her car around the village to fool people into thinking she was still there. It was, in fact, her body that Frank previously identified. JAMES' KIDNAPPING Kim's business partnership with Lord Alex Oakwell (Rupam Maxwell), resulted in the death of Linda Fowler (Tonicha Jeronimo), in a car crash. As an act of revenge, Linda's mother Jan (Roberta Kerr) kidnapped Kim's son James. DEPARTURE After a decade of causing chaos, Kim left Emmerdale in 1999 as she fled in a helicopter with her son James and £190,000 of Chris Tate's money. LATER MARRIAGES Upon Kim's return in 2018, she was first revealed to be married to Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough). However, he was later killed off in a whodunnit storyline. She later pursued a relationship with her employee Will Taylor (Dean Andrews), marrying him in 2022.

‘Get him on the first flight home' say Love Island fans as they insist ‘horrid' boy needs to be AXED after steamy scenes

LOVE Islander Boris Vidovic has landed on the wrong side of fans who have demanded he be removed from the villa. The Casa Amor stud won his place in the main villa after striking up a potential romance with Billykiss Azeez, who brought him back with her. 6 6 However, now he's moved on with fellow Casa bombshell Emma Munro – with the pair even sneaking off to the Hideaway for some private time and a snog in the pool. He also officially broke things off with Billykiss, with the pair deciding the spark wasn't quite there for either of them. The move came as a shock to fans, who didn't understand why they suddenly cooled off, although they'd noticed they had not appeared on screen as much over the last couple of days. But fans have become convinced that Boris deliberately used Billykiss to get into the villa, using his charm on her only to ditch her once he had secured his spot. Branding him "horrid", viewers have said that he should be on the "next plane home" as they vented on X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit. "Boris used Billykiss. I was never falling for that propaganda. Get him out. #LoveIsland" wrote one. "Boris wym finally… imma make sure ur ass is on the first flight back to Slovenia," said another. "Send both boris and emma home, they made it easy for the viewers #LoveIsland" noted a third. "Boris literally pretended to like Billykiss. Horrid," noted a fourth, while a fifth said: "Boris playedddd Billykiss to get into the villa icl [I can't lie] #loveisland" To further add to the awkwardness of the situation, Billykiss and Boris are still technically coupled up, with Billykiss being left with no choice but to choose him in one of the most awkward recoupling ceremonies ever. But things are set to get even more dramatic with surprise dumping set to take place tonight, with a major player being axed from the show. A source said: 'The way this dumping played out was truly savage. It was absolutely shocking. 'This Islander has been integral to the series - they'll be talked about for years - and so to lose them was a massive moment for bosses and will be the same for viewers. 'The scenes will play out over the next few episodes.' 6 6 6
