A day that was supposed to be filled with joy to celebrate the 71st birthday of the mother of a San Francisco-based DoorDash executive suddenly turned into a devastating tragedy when a luxury powerboat carrying ten people in Lake Tahoe capsized during a sudden storm, according to a report.This incident left eight dead in what officials are calling California's deadliest boating accident since 2019, as reported by ABC 7 San Francisco.The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office Coroner's Division confirmed that one of the victims was 37-year-old Josh Pickles, who was a DoorDash executive from San Francisco, even his parents, Terry Pickles, 73, and Paula Bozinovic, 71, died because of the boating incident, as per the ABC 7 San Francisco report. As per officials, they got 911 calls reporting the family's boat was capsised during a storm around 5 p.m., reported ABC 7 San Francisco.The spokesperson said that, "This is a terrible heartbreaking tragedy that took the lives of Joshua Pickles, his father Terry, his mother Paula, his uncle Peter as well as friends and family," adding that, "The family has homes in the Bay Area as well as on Lake Tahoe. They love the lake. Jordan also added that, "No words can express the pain and anguish we feel knowing their lives were lost during what was meant to be a joyful time on the lake. News.DoorDash's chief financial officer Ravi Inukonda expressed his sadness, saying, "We are heartbroken by the tragic accident that took the life of our beloved colleague, Josh Pickles," as quoted by E! News. He said, "During his nearly seven years at DoorDash, he brought a contagious spirit that lifted those around him. The loss of Josh is immeasurable. We miss him deeply and will carry his memory with us always," as quoted in the report.The CFO also said that, "Our thoughts and love are with his wife, his daughter, his family, and all who were close to him. We are working to support them through this incredibly difficult time," as quoted by E! Three convicted for Mumbai fake currency racket after pleading guilty
Mumbai: After three accused in a fake currency case pleaded guilty, a special NIA court on Thursday convicted and sentenced them to the time they served as undertrials. The three accused—Danish Petiwala, Sarasvati Dattaram alias Muskan, and J Kaleel Rahman—were found guilty on charges related to criminal conspiracy, possession and use of counterfeit currency, and terrorism. The NIA alleged that Amir Mirza alias Rafi Shaikh, a wanted accused based in Malaysia, and the trio entered into a criminal conspiracy to smuggle Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) from Malaysia by using banking channels as well as postal services to damage the monetary stability of India. In Thursday's case, in Feb 2020, the special investigation and intelligence branch of Customs arrested Petiwala and Dattaram for receiving fake currency notes with a face value of Rs 68,000 in the post and circulating them. Dattaram received a parcel from Malaysia that was declared as cosmetics but contained 34 fake Rs 2,000 notes. Mahim resident Petiwala was arrested for aiding and abetting the crime. Petiwala said that a man named Amir Mirza (absconding accused) sent the parcel from Malaysia. He said he paid Rs 50,000 for Rs 1 lakh in fake notes, but received fake notes with a face value of only Rs 68,000. Further investigations revealed that the two used a few thousand in fake notes at Domino's Pizza in Mahim, Cinema Hall at HUB Mall in Goregaon, for a three-day stay at a hotel in Marol, and also purchased cocaine and other drugs with it. Chennai-based Rahman was accused of being a co-conspirator. It was alleged that on January 20, 2020, Petiwala and Dattaram deposited genuine currency notes of Rs 45,000 in Rahman's bank account on Mirza's instructions towards the cost of FICN of the face value of Rs one lakh. On January 22, 2020, he withdrew the money in three tranches from the account. The parcel containing the FICN allegedly reached Mumbai on Feb 7, 2020. The investigations in the case were subsequently taken over by the NIA. Last month, another accused pleaded guilty, forfeiting his right to a trial in a fake currency case. The same court convicted and sentenced Mumbra-based accused, Jasim alias Wasim Shaikh, to five years and seven months of rigorous imprisonment for his involvement in a fake currency racket. Although Jasim initially pleaded not guilty, he later filed a plea to plead guilty, stating he was doing so voluntarily and without pressure. He cited being behind bars for over five years and seven months and requested mercy and a minimum sentence.

Guwahati: In an interesting feat in the history of the Assam Police, an IPS couple from the state will be honoured with prestigious medals on Independence Day in Guwahati for their service to the nation. Guwahati's Commissioner of Police, Partha Sarathi Mahanta, 2006-batch IPS officer, has been conferred the President's Medal for Distinguished Service for his exceptional leadership and unwavering contribution to policing in the state. Mr Mahanta also heads the Assam Police's Special Task Force ( STF ). In the last couple of years, Mr Mahanta has been behind several successful operations of the Assam Police. From busting the fledging sleeper cell network of the Bangladesh-based Ansar ul Bangla Team (ABT), an affiliate of al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), to breakthrough in smashing narco networks, Mr Mahanta has left his mark in these recent successes. Terror group ISIS India's head Haris Farooqi alias Harish Ajmal Farukhi and his associate Anurag Singh alias Rehan were arrested in Assam's Dhubri district earlier this year after they crossed over from Bangladesh. Mr Mahanta's team had led the operation. Vantara and Captive Elephant, Animal Cases: Amend Petitions Before Next Hearing, Says SC
One petition seeks an investigation into all wildlife imports and conservation-related operations undertaken after 2020 by Vantara and the Radha Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust. New Delhi: Hearing two petitions related to captive elephants and other animals at Vantara, the Jamnagar-based and Reliance-owned zoo and rescue-and-rehabilitation-centre, the Supreme Court on Thursday (August 14) asked petitioners to make changes – including listing Vantara as a respondent – and set the next date for hearing on August 25, according to news reports. 'Don't file vague petitions' One petition pertained to an inquiry into Vantara's operations. Petitioner Dev Sharma sought an investigation into all wildlife imports and conservation-related operations undertaken since 2020 by Vantara and its linked entity, the Radha Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust, LiveLaw and the Indian Express reported. Apart from this, the petition also called for the verification of permits under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) that enabled the import of animals to Vantara, the evaluation of claims regarding a gene bank, scrutiny of breeder legitimacy and source-country clearances, checks on compliance with the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, as well as India's obligations under CITES and the Convention on Biological Diversity, per LiveLaw. 'The law and rules have been violated. States' administration failed, some officers were compromised and others were threatened. Captive elephants were forcibly taken from temples and their owners,' the New Indian Express quoted the petition as stating. 'Not only national-level but also international-level animals and birds, some of them endangered species, were smuggled into Vantara in the name of a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation facility in Gujarat,' it was quoted as also saying. The bench of Justices Pankaj Mithal and Prasanna Varale asked petitioner Sharma why he had not approached the Central Zoo Authority or any other relevant zoo authority before coming to the court. 'Don't file such vague petitions,' IE quoted the bench as saying. However, the bench permitted the petitioner to add more facts to the petition and re-submit it in five days. Another petition that the Supreme Court heard on August 14 sought to constitute a monitoring committee to ensure that all captive elephants at Vantara be returned to their respective owners, and that all other animals and birds at the facility be released back into the wild. However, hearing this petition filed by petitioner C.R. Jaya Sukin, the court observed that Vantara had not been included as a respondent in the case. 'You are making allegations against parties which are not represented here,' LiveLaw quoted the bench as saying. 'You have not made them respondents. You implead them and then come back to us, we will see.' Per LiveLaw, the court will hear both matters on August 25. Vantara in the spotlight Vantara has been in the news recently after female elephant Madhuri (also called Mahadevi) was transferred from the zoo and rescue-and-rehabilitation centre from a Jain mutt in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. The elephant had been in the care of the Jain mutt, the Swastishri Jinsen Bhattarak Pattacharya Mahaswamy Sanstha, in Kolhapur's Nandani village for over 30 years. However, following observations by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that the elephant was in ill health and required medical treatment, Madhuri was moved to Vantara recently. Huge protests followed this move: people got out on the streets in Kolhapur and nearby areas, demanding that the elephant be brought back. Residents also decided to boycott Reliance products in some areas. Before this, several news reports had also questioned the methods by which Vantara has amassed several species of wildlife at its zoo, including a mountain gorilla, from numerous countries across the world. Vantara, however, has held that all transfers were legal and came with valid CITES and other certificates and paperwork. More recently, the Union Ministry of Forests, Environment and Climate Change evaded a question on the number of animals kept at Vantara in the ongoing parliament session. In response to several questions from Sudha Ramakrishnan, a Congress MP from Tamil Nadu, including whether the government had inspected the living conditions of these animals and conducted any study on their impact on the environment, the minister of state of the Union environment ministry went on to only list the five private zoos in the country in a written reply.
