DoorDash executive among 8 dead in boating accident on Lake Tahoe

Eight people including an executive at DoorDash died in a boating accident Saturday at Lake Tahoe, California, officials said, in an unexpectedly powerful afternoon storm that capsized and grounded multiple boats at the popular tourist destination. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said an emergency was reported shortly before 3 p.m. on Saturday near D.L. Bliss State Park, on the southwestern shore of the lake. As waves reached heights of up to eight feet, a boat capsized, sending 10 people into the water, the sheriff's office said. Zach Shearer, an operations manager at Tahoe Sportfishing, said the storm came 'up out of nowhere so fast,' turning the cold but calm afternoon into a tumult of wind and snow. 'The big thing was the wind and how it shifted, and how it really wasn't in the forecast,' he said. '... It was bad.' The local family business had all of its fishing charter boats on the water at the time, Shearer said. One was caught in the storm and rode it out, and the rest managed to get to safety, he added. Two people were rescued. The last body was recovered on Monday. The sheriff's office said it 'expresses it's deepest condolences to the families of those who have been affected by this tragic event.' Josh Pickles, 37, a corporate employee at DoorDash who lived in San Francisco, was among the victims, as was his father, Terry Pickles, 73, and mother, Paula Bozinovich, 71, both of Redwood City, California. In a statement, DoorDash's chief financial officer Ravi Inukonda said Pickles left behind a wife and daughter. 'We are heartbroken by the tragic accident that took the life of our beloved colleague,' he said. The victims of the boating accident were between the ages of 37 and 73. Five were from California and three from New York. They were celebrating the birthday of one in the party, local media reported, and were on board a 27-foot gold vessel made by Chris-Craft, a luxury powerboat company, when the change in weather brought reported 30-knot winds, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Several boats on Lake Tahoe capsized or were grounded because of the afternoon storm, said the Office of Spill Prevention and Response, part of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Its team deployed to address fuel spillage from damaged vessels. The National Weather Service had issued a wind advisory for that afternoon for neighboring Mono County. But Matthew Chyba, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Reno, Nevada, told the Associated Press that the severity of the weather exceeded predictions on the lake. The water temperature of the alpine lake dipped to a low of about 45 degrees on Saturday, according to the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at the University of California at Davis.

How a Birthday Boat Ride on Lake Tahoe Turned Tragic

The weekend seemed perfect for a summer excursion on the azure waters of Lake Tahoe. Josh Pickles, a DoorDash executive, took several family members and friends on his boat to celebrate his mother's 71st birthday. His wife, Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard, stayed home to care for their infant daughter. But sunshine suddenly gave way to a ferocious storm on Saturday afternoon that caught even longtime Tahoe residents by surprise. Thunder and lightning roared from the sky, dumping rain and snow. Waves as tall as eight feet ripped across the lake, according to some accounts. The day ended in a nightmare. Mr. Pickles's 27-foot-long boat capsized, tossing passengers into the frigid water toward the south end of the lake. He and his parents died, along with five of their guests. And Ms. Sugar-Carlsgaard, 38, suddenly found herself a widow with a seven-month-old baby. 'We are devastated by this tragedy,' she said in a statement. 'No words can express the pain and anguish we feel knowing their lives were lost during what was meant to be a joyful time on the lake.' Mr. Pickles was an experienced sailor but the gold Chris-Craft boat was still new to him, said Sam Singer, a family representative. He had operated it twice last year, and Saturday's outing was the first time he had taken it out this season. Like many who work in the tech industry, the couple split time between their homes in the Tahoe region and in the San Francisco Bay Area, where Ms. Sugar-Carlsgaard is an executive assistant at Airbnb, according Mr. Singer. DoorDash executive, his parents ID'd as victims of Lake Tahoe boat tragedy that killed 8

A DoorDash executive and members of his family were among the eight victims killed on Lake Tahoe after their boat capsized during a sudden windstorm on Saturday. Josh Pickles, a 37-year-old executive with DoorDash, his father, 73-year-old Terry Pickles and his mother 71-year-old Paula Bozinovich all died after the boat was overwhelmed by a storm that spurred 8-foot waves and intense wind gusts up to 35 mph. 4 Paula Bozinovich, Josh Pickles, and Terry Pickles were all killed after their family boat capsized on Lake Tahoe. AP The party of eight was on the Pickles' 27-foot powerboat celebrating Bozinovich's 71st birthday, family spokesperson Sam Singer told ABC7. 'The family has homes in the Bay Area as well as on Lake Tahoe. They love the lake. That adds to the tragedy that has occurred,' Singer said. Ravi Inukonda, chief financial officer at DoorDash, struggled to fathom what the company would look like without Pickles. 'Josh loved his team and was an inspiration to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. During his nearly seven years at DoorDash, he brought a contagious spirit that lifted those around him. The loss of Josh is immeasurable,' Inukonda wrote in a statement. 4 Pickles served as an executive in DoorDash's finance department. Pickles worked as the company's global head of strategic sourcing and procurement in the finance department. He is survived by his wife, Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard, and their 7-month-old daughter. 'No words can express the pain and anguish we feel knowing their lives were lost,' Sugar-Carlsgaard wrote in a statement to KTXL. Sugar-Carlsgaard, an executive assistant at Airbnb, didn't board the boat with the rest of the group and opted to stay on the shore to look after her daughter. 4 The group was on the boat celebrating Bozinovich's 71st birthday. AP The other victims were Pickles' uncle, Peter Bayes, 72 and family friends Timothy O'Leary, 71, Theresa Giullari, 66, James Guck, 69, and Stephen Lindsay, 63. Two other passengers on board survived and were hospitalized with hypothermia and other injuries, officials said. 4 The boat capsized after a sudden storm drew 8-foot waves and 35 mph winds. AP Pickles and his father shared the 'Chris-Craft' boat and had just purchased it last year. The family only used it twice before during the last boating season, according to Singer. The accident marked the deadliest boating incident in California since a 2019 boat fire that killed all 34 passengers on board.

8 victims, including DoorDash executive, identified in fatal Lake Tahoe accident

California officials have identified the eight victims who died after a powerboat capsized on Lake Tahoe over the weekend. The 27-foot vessel carrying 10 total passengers overturned near D.L. Bliss State Park in South Lake Tahoe, California on June 21 amid a sudden storm and wave heights that reportedly reached 8 feet. Only two passengers were rescued and taken to local hospitals for treatment, prompting search and recovery efforts for the remaining eight, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office's Coroner's Division confirmed Tuesday, June 24 that all eight victims have been identified. The victims include five people from California and three from New York. The deceased victims were ages 63 and over with the exception of a 37-year-old on board. The youngest victim was confirmed as Josh Pickles, an executive at DoorDash. "We are heartbroken by the tragic accident that took the life of our beloved colleague, Josh Pickles," Ravi Inukonda, Chief Financial Officer at DoorDash, said in a statement to USA TODAY. "Josh loved his team and was an inspiration to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. During his nearly seven years at DoorDash, he brought a contagious spirit that lifted those around him. The loss of Josh is immeasurable. We miss him deeply and will carry his memory with us always. Our thoughts and love are with his wife, his daughter, his family, and all who were close to him. We are working to support them through this incredibly difficult time." "The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office extends its deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of those who were lost and all those who have been affected by this tragic event," the office wrote on Facebook June 24. Who were the victims? What happened? Ten people were onboard the 27-foot Chris-Craft boat the afternoon of Saturday, June 21 when a storm prompted 8-foot swells that caused the vessel to capsize, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. It's unclear whether any of the boaters were wearing life jackets. Six bodies were recovered that afternoon with the seventh victim found the evening of June 22 and the eighth on June 23, the sheriff's office confirmed. Where is Lake Tahoe? Lake Tahoe is a freshwater lake high in the Sierra Nevada range, straddling the border between Nevada and California. It trails only the Great Lakes in total water volume and is renowned for its clarity. The majority of its surface area, including the site of the boat accident, is in California.
