What to do if your vacation plans are canceled by weather amid Hurricane Erin
Hurricane Erin churned along on Aug. 20, bringing dangerous conditions to parts of the United States and other popular destinations that could impact travel plans. Much of the country's East Coast, along with the beaches of the Bahamas, Bermuda and Atlantic Canada, are likely to see life-threatening surf and rip currents "during the next several days," according to the National Hurricane Center. 'Storm surge flooding and tropical storm conditions are expected in the North Carolina Outer Banks beginning later today or tonight,' an Aug. 20 advisory said. 'The storm surge will be accompanied by large waves, leading to significant beach erosion and overwash, making some roads impassable.' Here's what travelers should know if trips are disrupted. What happens to flights? Flyers are owed refunds if their flight is canceled for any reason and they choose not to travel on alternative flights offered by their airline. Passengers can sometimes get additional compensation if the reason is within the airline's control, but weather doesn't fall into that category. Airlines also often offer waivers that let travelers change their flights without paying extra fees or a fare difference, so it's worth checking with your carrier before flying. Around 190 U.S. flights were canceled as of 1 p.m. ET on Aug. 20, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware. Travelers may also be entitled to refunds for a 'significant delay,' though that can depend on how long the delay lasted, the flight's length and other factors, and does not have a standard definition. 'DOT determines whether you are entitled to a refund following a significant delay on a case-by-case basis,' the Department of Transportation's website reads. Does travel insurance cover it? 'Trip cancellation or interruption coverage may apply – especially if Hurricane Erin makes your destination uninhabitable,' Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip, told USA TODAY in an email. However, she noted that for hurricane coverage, travelers must buy their policies before a storm is named, and recommended buying early. Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) plans can also cover cancellations for reasons standard policies may not. 'CFAR must be purchased within 14-21 days of the initial trip deposit and can reimburse up to 50%-75% of prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if the trip is canceled at least 48 hours before departure,' Morrow said. What about my Airbnb or Vrbo? Airbnb's Major Disruptive Events Policy covers a range of potential events, including unforeseeable weather and natural disasters. The policy allows guests to cancel their booking and get a refund, credit or other compensation, according to Airbnb's website. However, certain weather events are not covered, such as those that 'are common enough to be foreseeable in a given location, such as hurricanes in Florida during hurricane season or winter weather in the northern hemisphere during winter months,' the company noted. Travelers can contact Airbnb directly to ask whether their reservation is eligible. Vrbo has a similar Extenuating Circumstances Policy. 'Foreseeable weather disasters (such as hurricanes, cyclones, and extreme winter storms) may be covered if they cause or coincide with another covered event,' the vacation rental platform said on its website. 'For example, a hurricane that causes prolonged outages to public utilities to a vast majority of homes in a major region or city (cannot be outages to a few neighborhoods).' Morgan Wallen Will Not Submit Latest Album for Grammys Consideration
The country superstar Morgan Wallen will not submit his latest album for consideration at the Grammy Awards, his representatives confirmed on Wednesday, rebuffing an institution that has paid him little attention during his rise as one of the most popular artists in music. Wallen's 'I'm the Problem' has held the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart on 11 nonconsecutive weeks since its release in May. The Recording Academy has recognized Wallen with two past nominations. Neither was for work on his previous three albums; he picked up both nods for the 2025 ceremony for his feature on 'I Had Some Help,' a hit off Post Malone's album 'F-1 Trillion.' Wallen, who didn't explain his decision to step away from the awards, has joined an assembly of major artists who have abandoned the music industry's most recognized honors. Drake, the Weeknd, Frank Ocean and Zach Bryan have all at times opted not to submit their music for Grammys consideration, citing reasons including concerns over the nomination process, the makeup of the voting body and the restrictions of genre-based categories. The Weeknd boycotted the awards for several years, until a détente in February, when the singer played two songs on the telecast. In a speech before the performance, Harvey Mason Jr., the head of the Grammy Awards, said that the academy had listened to artists' criticism of the institution as being out of touch with younger tastes, noting that it had recently refreshed much of its membership. Hits Daily Double, the music industry gossip site, was the first to report the news of Wallen's decision. On 'I'm the Problem,' the singer and songwriter's moody and melancholy fourth album, Wallen delivered 37 tracks that include collaborations with Tate McRae, Eric Church and Post Malone. Songs on the album could end up receiving recognition at the Grammys if they are submitted for consideration by other songwriters — the album's extensive roster includes the producer Charlie Handsome and the songwriter Ernest.. Wallen has a history of keeping mainstream music institutions at a distance. Last year, he won entertainer of the year at the Country Music Association Awards and was the most nominated artist, but he was absent from the ceremony. Once rebuked by the mainstream music industry after video surfaced of him using a racial slur, Wallen faced another wave of public scrutiny last year when he was arrested and accused of throwing a chair from the sixth-story roof of a downtown bar owned by Church. He pleaded guilty to reduced charges, for misdemeanor reckless endangerment, in December. The incident did little to dampen his popularity — he was among the most streamed artists of last year — and he is currently on a stadium tour for 'I'm the Problem.' Nominations for the upcoming Grammy Awards will be announced in November, and the awards show is scheduled for Feb. 1. Artists may submit their music for consideration through Aug. 29.

Pumpkin spice has returned at Dunkin' and will soon be back at Starbucks, too. Starbucks announced last month the Pumpkin Spice Latte will return to menus at the end of August, which fits within the range of when it historically has opened pumpkin spice season in the past. First introduced in 2003, the return of the PSL has become an annual rite of late summer since Starbucks introduced the drink. Over the last two decades, customers have looked forward to the PSL's return. As pumpkin spice season gets underway, here's what to know. When does the Pumpkin Spice Latte come out at Starbucks? PSLs return to Starbucks on Tuesday, Aug. 26. When does Starbucks drop the fall menu? What's back and new Starbucks' fall menu drops on Aug. 26 with the PSL. Also returning are the Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew, Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai and Pecan Crunch Oatmilk Latte. Newcomers to the menu include Italian Sausage Egg Bites and a Pecan Oatmilk Cortado. The Cortado, a new style of coffee drink Starbucks added earlier this year, is made with three ristretto shots of Blonde Espresso and steamed milk (ristretto espresso shots are smaller and more concentrated than traditional ones). A current option is the Brown Sugar Oatmilk Cortado. Dunkin' fall menu: Dunkin' Pumpkin Spice Latte is back. See the full fall menu. What's in the Pumpkin Spice Latte? The PSL, which Starbucks says is its most popular seasonal beverage – available hot, iced or blended – is made with real pumpkin flavor, pumpkin-related spices (including cinnamon, nutmeg and clove), Starbucks Signature Espresso and steamed milk.
