Meet Delhi's Ujjawal Kesari, Who Secured AIR 5 In JEE Advanced And Aims To Join IISc Bangalore

JEE Advanced AIR 5 Ujjawal Kesari has also been selected to represent India in the International Chemistry Olympiad slated to be held in Dubai in July this year.
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2025 results were announced on Monday. Meet Ujjawal Kesari, native of Delhi, who grabbed the All India Rank – 5 by scoring 324 marks out of a total of 360 in the IIT entrance exam.
It was his keen interest in physics and mathematics that drove him to take this route. He would spend almost 10 to 12 hours daily for his JEE preparation. Ujjawal also 99.999 percentile in the JEE Main 2025 first session exam and secured an overall rank of 33. He did not appear for the second session. He had joined Vidyamandir Classes, New Delhi since class 10 for his JEE preparations.
'The flow of JEE Mains and Advanced went simultaneously. I mostly referred to notes and modules I received from my teachers. For JEE Mains, I referred to NCERT books extensively, especially for the chemistry section. I studied around 10-12 hours daily. During school days, after returning, I would spend around 5-6 hours on JEE preparation," the 17-year-old said.
'I always had an interest in science field especially physics, But I was never interested in biology. Hence always wanted to go to engineering. I have been inclined towards math and physics since childhood," Ujjawal told News18.
'There are many ups and downs but we have to keep trying and not give up in between," he added.
Unlike many students who opt for IITs, Ujjawal plans to go to IISc Bangalore as he wishes to take up research in physics. 'It is one of the best institutes for in India for research. Physics was my favourite subject," he said.
He has also been selected to represent India in the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) slated to be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in July this year.
He completed his schooling from CBSE-affiliated Birla Vidyamandir Niketan wherein he 97.4 per cent in class 10 and 97.8 per cent in class 12th. His father is in the placement service and runs his own consultancy while his mother is a housewife.

The JEE Advanced 2025 results show progress in the area of gender representation, with 9,404 female candidates qualifying, the greatest number since 2017. 'The growth from 7,137 female qualifiers in 2017 (~14.1%) to 9,404 female qualifiers in 2025 (~17.3%) demonstrates the success of continued programming promoting more girls to enter STEM', Nitin Vijay, Founder and CEO, Motion Education. Mr. Vijay pointed to a positive trend for girl candidates in the current academic year. He said, 'Increased opportunities are driven by the addition of 1,364 new seats and a 20% female supernumerary quota at all 23 IITs. It represents greater access for deserving female candidates to IIT admissions. With 50,455 total qualifiers in 2017 narrowing to 54,378 total qualifiers in 2025, and the percentage of women qualifiers consistently climbing, the future of gender diversity in India's premier technical institutions has never been so promising.' Approximately 1.90 lakh students appeared for JEE Advanced 2025, out of which around 43,000 were female candidates. The 20% female supernumerary quota will continue to be implemented across IITs. However, girls can secure admission under both the female-only pool and the gender-neutral pool. Those with higher ranks can even gain admission through the gender-neutral category. This system particularly benefits female candidates with relatively higher ranks. If girls make smart, strategic choices during JoSAA counselling, they stand a strong chance of getting into top IITs even with relatively higher All India Ranks. It is expected that this year, girls with an All India Rank of up to around 25,000 may have the opportunity to secure admission in IITs. Paper difficulty level Sharing his feedback on the paper, Mr. Vijay reported that JEE Advanced 2025 was of a moderate to difficult level of difficulty. Based on initial student feedback, Mathematics was found to be the most challenging section, with lengthy, difficult, and time-consuming questions requiring conceptual clarity and profound thinking. Physics was reported as moderate to challenging, with questions requiring understanding and accuracy, while Chemistry was comparatively easier in both sessions, allowing students to conserve time during the exam. Paper 2 proved to be tougher than Paper 1, particularly as eight number value-type questions were provided with no options. As compared to previous years, no paragraph-type questions were posed. Maths and Physics proved to be time-consuming and tough in Paper-2, whereas Chemistry proved to be a comparatively easier level of difficulty.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has declared the results of JEE Advanced 2025, the highly competitive entrance exam for admissions to India's top engineering institutes. Alongside the results, the final answer keys for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 have also been published. Rajit Gupta has secured the top rank in the Common Rank List (CRL) with a score of 332, followed by Saksham Jindal, who also scored 332 but ranked second based on tie-breaking criteria. Devdutta Majhi, with a CRL of 16, is the top-ranked female candidate this year. A total of 1,80,422 candidates appeared for both papers of the exam, which was held on May 18 in two shifts - Paper 1 from 9AM to 12 noon, and Paper 2 from 2.30PM to 5.30PM. Of these, 54,378 candidates qualified. The final answer key can serve as a valuable tool for aspirants to understand the pattern and difficulty level of the exam, which serves as a gateway to the IITs. The provisional answer key was released on May 25, and students were given time till May 27, 5PM to raise objections. ‘A lot of hard work, dedication and discipline go into success'
For 18-year-old Rajit Gupta, large banners and hoardings displaying photos and names of previous year's toppers of competitive exams acted as an inspiration, reminding constantly of his aim to find his own photo and name on one of those advertising spots. A resident of Kota, considered India's coaching capital, Gupta bagged the top rank in JEE advanced, the qualifying paper for admission to premier IITs, results of which were announced on Monday. Gupta, an IIT Delhi zone candidate, scored 332 out of 360 marks in the entrance exam. 'My seniors and teachers played a huge role in inspiring me to do well in the exam,' Gupta told HT, adding that watching the faces and names of previous years' toppers also 'truly inspired' him. Having scored a perfect 100 percentile (AIR16) in JEE mains, he was confident about JEE advanced. 'I'm very happy with my result,' said the 18-year-old, whose father Deepak Gupta is a sub-divisional engineer with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and mother Shruti Agrawal teaches home science at a Kota college. 'I have been preparing for this exam for the last three years,' Gupta said, adding he plans to pursue BTech in Computer Science from IIT-Bombay. 'My parents have really helped me throughout the process.' Apart from school hours, he studied 5-6 hours every day, without stressing about the results. 'I play cricket and badminton whenever I get time from my studies,' he added. On his immediate plans, Gupta said he is concentrating on the upcoming international Physics Olympiad. 'I'm going to France and will be representing India on July 18 in the Olympiad,' the JEE topper from Rajasthan said. On the opposite spectrum geographically, Devdutta Majhi of Katwa in West Bengal's East Burdwan district focused solely on the tested combination of 'hard work, dedication, and discipline' to achieve success. A candidate from IIT Kharagpur zone, Majhi topped among female candidates in JEE Advanced, scoring 312 (she was 16th on the common rank list or CRL). 'I studied for 10-12 hours every day and followed a daily routine. Sometimes my mother scolded me when I used to study too much. She cares for my health. Excellence doesn't come overnight. A lot of hard work, dedication and discipline go behind it,' Majhi said. She had topped the Madhyamik examination (Class X board) in West Bengal in 2023 and earlier this year, Majhi hit the headlines along with Archisman Nandy, another student from the eastern state, for scoring perfect 100 in the JEE Mains. 'The only challenge I faced was the dearth of good teachers in the district. For that I had to depend on online classes with teachers from both Kolkata and Delhi,' she said, adding that she wants to pursue research after securing a seat at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. An animal lover, Majhi is also known in her locality as the one who cares for the strays. 'I love to read story books, particularly detective stories. I also play violin,' she added. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated Majhi for making the state proud. '…Today's JEE Advanced 2025 examination results show that you have been topper among all girls in the entire country, and the highest rank holder in the IIT Kharagpur zone. You achieved top ranks in our Secondary and Higher Secondary examinations earlier, and now you are the topper girl of India!
