JEE Advanced 2025: Record 9,404 female candidates qualify, marking highest since 2017

The JEE Advanced 2025 results show progress in the area of gender representation, with 9,404 female candidates qualifying, the greatest number since 2017. 'The growth from 7,137 female qualifiers in 2017 (~14.1%) to 9,404 female qualifiers in 2025 (~17.3%) demonstrates the success of continued programming promoting more girls to enter STEM', Nitin Vijay, Founder and CEO, Motion Education.
Mr. Vijay pointed to a positive trend for girl candidates in the current academic year. He said, 'Increased opportunities are driven by the addition of 1,364 new B.Tech seats and a 20% female supernumerary quota at all 23 IITs. It represents greater access for deserving female candidates to IIT admissions. With 50,455 total qualifiers in 2017 narrowing to 54,378 total qualifiers in 2025, and the percentage of women qualifiers consistently climbing, the future of gender diversity in India's premier technical institutions has never been so promising.'
Approximately 1.90 lakh students appeared for JEE Advanced 2025, out of which around 43,000 were female candidates. The 20% female supernumerary quota will continue to be implemented across IITs. However, girls can secure admission under both the female-only pool and the gender-neutral pool.
Those with higher ranks can even gain admission through the gender-neutral category. This system particularly benefits female candidates with relatively higher ranks. If girls make smart, strategic choices during JoSAA counselling, they stand a strong chance of getting into top IITs even with relatively higher All India Ranks. It is expected that this year, girls with an All India Rank of up to around 25,000 may have the opportunity to secure admission in IITs.
Paper difficulty level
Sharing his feedback on the paper, Mr. Vijay reported that JEE Advanced 2025 was of a moderate to difficult level of difficulty. Based on initial student feedback, Mathematics was found to be the most challenging section, with lengthy, difficult, and time-consuming questions requiring conceptual clarity and profound thinking.
Physics was reported as moderate to challenging, with questions requiring understanding and accuracy, while Chemistry was comparatively easier in both sessions, allowing students to conserve time during the exam. Paper 2 proved to be tougher than Paper 1, particularly as eight number value-type questions were provided with no options. As compared to previous years, no paragraph-type questions were posed. Maths and Physics proved to be time-consuming and tough in Paper-2, whereas Chemistry proved to be a comparatively easier level of difficulty.

The system, called HyEco, shows how disease-causing microbes move through water and which areas face the highest model was tested during the 2023 Delhi floods. The results were worrying. HyEco, the researchers say, gives authorities a chance to act before an outbreak tool can identify 'health danger hotspots' and help civic agencies focus on those areas. It can be used to send SMS alerts to residents, improve sewage treatment plants, clean drains before monsoon, and even guide emergency water-cleaning operations.'Floods don't just damage buildings; they can trigger silent health crises,' said Prof. Mohit P. Mohanty of IIT Roorkee. 'HyEco gives us the power to see where the danger will be highest, so action can be taken before it's too late.'IIT Roorkee Director Prof. Kamal Kishore Pant said the work goes beyond academic research. 'This is science serving society. By preparing cities for both visible and hidden dangers of floods, HyEco can help build safer and healthier communities,' he LINKS WITH NATIONAL MISSIONS AND SDGsThe model also supports several government programmes such as the National Mission for Clean Ganga, Swachh Bharat Mission, National Disaster Management Plan, and the National Health Mission. Globally, it links with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including clean water, health, sustainable cities, and climate system is not limited to India. It can be used in any flood-prone city, from Mumbai to Manila, Jakarta to New Orleans. The team says the model offers a way to cut health risks in the aftermath of urban climate change brings heavier rains and more intense floods, the bigger danger may not only be submerged homes but the microbes flowing with the water. 1 2 Lucknow: In a groundbreaking move, the Uttar Pradesh govt has announced a pioneering project led by IIT-Kanpur to study the Ganga river's past and chart its future with the help of the rare images captured by the American spy satellite series 'Corona'. The initiative, launched by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), marks a significant step towards preserving the river's heritage and ensuring its sustainability. By combining declassified 1965 images from the Corona satellite series with cutting-edge 2018-19 satellite data, IIT-K researchers have documented significant changes in the river's morphology, flow patterns, and land use over the past five decades, providing valuable insights into its transformation. The project will also develop interactive digital displays for nine key locations -- Haridwar, Bijnor, Narora, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Patna, Bhagalpur, and Farakka--providing critical insights for informed decision-making at local, regional, and national levels. Talking to TOI, Prof. Rajiv Sinha, Department of Earth Sciences, IIT-K, said: "This project was funded by NMCG, Ministry of Jal Shakti. The project has already been completed and NMCG is now funding anew project to make this data and information available on a web-GIS portal, so that it is accessible to the general public. It will also include some additional functionalities related to query and statistics generation. " All the data will be integrated into a Web-GIS platform with a powerful query system, allowing researchers and planners to quickly retrieve specific data as needed. The images note significant changes in the morphology of the Ganga around the confluence zone in Prayagraj and interestingly not so much in the Yamuna river during the period 1965-2019. While the Ganga has maintained its general form and position of meanders, there are significant reductions in the meander wavelength, width of the channel belt and active floodplain width. The channel centre line shift image of the six decades shows that the main channel of the Ganga river has been moderately migratory in this channel has migrated in the order of 2.5km in upstream of the Sangam region,and this has resulted in a significant change in the meander wavelength of the Gangajustbefore its confluence. The position as well as the morphology of the river in Kanpur has changed moderately during the period 1965-2018 as shown in the 'Corona' images. The planform based on the 1965 image shows large mid-channel bars, large lateral bars and a very wide active floodplain. The Oxbow lakes and meander scars close to the barrage site in the 2018 image are manifestations of the older active channel belt of 1965 that has now moved NW to its current position. A comparison of the 1965 Corona image and2018 Sentinel image of the Ganga around Varanasi shows very little modification in channel channel has broad meanders in this reach and the position and form of the meanders are strikingly similar in both images suggesting a very stable reach. Not just the meanders, some of the large bars have also remained unchanged in more than five decades. The govt has said, "The Corona images capture the Ganga in an almost untouched form, while the 2019 images reveal the changing reality, where barrages, embankments, and urban sprawl have restricted the river's meandering pace. This comparative study now offers fresh hope. Scientists now have concrete maps that indicate areas where restoration could help the Ganga regain its old rhythm and where improved land use could enhance its health." With a public data dissemination system in place, this valuable information will be accessible to various stakeholders, driving future research on the Ganga. Today, those high-res frames from America's Corona spy satellites are helping India read Ganga's past — and plot the river's future. Declassified Cold War images, taken between 1959 and 1972, are at the core of an IIT-Kanpur project funded by National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG). By layering them with sharp 2018–19 satellite data, scientists have traced five decades of the river's shifting course, meanders, and floodplains. UP govt has unveiled the study as a milestone in data-driven river conservation. "The project has already been completed. NMCG is now funding a new project to make this data and information available on a web-GIS portal, accessible to the general public," Prof Rajiv Sinha of IIT-Kanpur's earth sciences department said Monday. "It will also include some additional functionalities related to query and statistics generation. " The findings show Ganga has migrated about 2.5km upstream of the Sangam in Prayagraj since 1965. Its meander wavelength has shrunk, floodplain narrowed, and channel belt contracted. Yamuna, by contrast, shows little morphological change. The 1965 Corona frame revealed a vast floodplain in Kanpur with mid-channel and lateral bars. By 2018, oxbow lakes and meander scars replaced them, showing how the active channel belt shifted northwest. In Varanasi, meanders, bars, even channel position look almost identical in 1965 and 2018, suggesting this stretch is one of Ganga's most stable. State govt called the comparison stark: "The Corona images capture Ganga in an almost untouched form, while the 2019 images reveal the changing reality, where barrages, embankments, and urban sprawl have restricted the river's meandering pace. This comparative study now offers fresh hope. Scientists have maps that indicate areas where restoration could help the Ganga regain its old rhythm and where improved land use could enhance its health. " For IIT-Kanpur scientists, this is only a beginning. The Corona frames meant to watch the Cold War now guard the nation's holiest river.
