JEE Advanced 2025: Record 9,404 female candidates qualify, marking highest since 2017

The JEE Advanced 2025 results show progress in the area of gender representation, with 9,404 female candidates qualifying, the greatest number since 2017. 'The growth from 7,137 female qualifiers in 2017 (~14.1%) to 9,404 female qualifiers in 2025 (~17.3%) demonstrates the success of continued programming promoting more girls to enter STEM', Nitin Vijay, Founder and CEO, Motion Education.
Mr. Vijay pointed to a positive trend for girl candidates in the current academic year. He said, 'Increased opportunities are driven by the addition of 1,364 new B.Tech seats and a 20% female supernumerary quota at all 23 IITs. It represents greater access for deserving female candidates to IIT admissions. With 50,455 total qualifiers in 2017 narrowing to 54,378 total qualifiers in 2025, and the percentage of women qualifiers consistently climbing, the future of gender diversity in India's premier technical institutions has never been so promising.'
Approximately 1.90 lakh students appeared for JEE Advanced 2025, out of which around 43,000 were female candidates. The 20% female supernumerary quota will continue to be implemented across IITs. However, girls can secure admission under both the female-only pool and the gender-neutral pool.
Those with higher ranks can even gain admission through the gender-neutral category. This system particularly benefits female candidates with relatively higher ranks. If girls make smart, strategic choices during JoSAA counselling, they stand a strong chance of getting into top IITs even with relatively higher All India Ranks. It is expected that this year, girls with an All India Rank of up to around 25,000 may have the opportunity to secure admission in IITs.
Paper difficulty level
Sharing his feedback on the paper, Mr. Vijay reported that JEE Advanced 2025 was of a moderate to difficult level of difficulty. Based on initial student feedback, Mathematics was found to be the most challenging section, with lengthy, difficult, and time-consuming questions requiring conceptual clarity and profound thinking.
Physics was reported as moderate to challenging, with questions requiring understanding and accuracy, while Chemistry was comparatively easier in both sessions, allowing students to conserve time during the exam. Paper 2 proved to be tougher than Paper 1, particularly as eight number value-type questions were provided with no options. As compared to previous years, no paragraph-type questions were posed. Maths and Physics proved to be time-consuming and tough in Paper-2, whereas Chemistry proved to be a comparatively easier level of difficulty.

Mumbai: Devesh Bhaiya, All India Rank 8 this year in the fiercely contested JEE Advanced, has decided to turn his back on India's elite engineering institutions and head for MIT instead. He won't be alone. Ved Lahoti, last year's Rank 1 and the candidate who has scored the highest in the entrance exam (352/360) in recent history, is also wrapping up his Powai chapter in exchange for a fully funded scholarship at MIT. There's a murmur of a trend here. In 2020, it was Chirag Falor who chose MIT over IIT. Before that, it was Chitraang Murdia, who spent a year at IIT Bombay before transferring to MIT. He now holds a PhD from Berkeley. "It seems like MIT trusts the rigour of JEE Advanced and the promise of our Olympiad stars," said Prof Vijay Singh, once at IIT Kanpur, who later superannuated from the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education. Jalgaon's Devesh has a record that goes far beyond the JEE rank: three gold medals, two from International Junior Science Olympiads in 2021 and 2022, and one from the International Chemistry Olympiad in 2024. In 2020, he was awarded the Bal Shakti Puraskar. At 12, when most children were still tracing constellations in the sky, Devesh was mapping their vanishing — authoring a paper on light pollution. He received admission to MIT in March but sat for JEE Advanced anyway — a "back-up," he calls it. Devesh is not alone. But the others chose to stay for a year, to feel the pulse on Indian campuses, before going overseas. They too were accepted by American universities, whose doors — as Professor Vijay Singh notes — open wide for those with Olympiad medals and high JEE scores. The students' reasons for the switch are apparent. "I'm fully satisfied with IIT Bombay. But it lags in research. Globally, it's not even in the top 100. So, I applied to MIT — and when it came through, I took it. A lot of students have taken transfer to MIT and when I asked them, they said the transfer was truly worth it," said Lahoti. Nishank Abhangi, who spent 2019–2020 immersed in IIT Bombay's rigour before packing for MIT, and Mahit Gadhewala, All India Rank 9 in 2022, who also left after a year at IITB, are the other examples. Prof Singh said the first such student to do so was Raghu Mahajan, who spent a year at IIT Delhi, then took off to MIT, completed his PhD at Stanford, and is currently spending a year at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, Bengaluru. "He was very committed to coming back to India," recalled Prof Singh. Lahoti too shares the same feelings. "I have no plans to settle in the USA."

'Being consistent is the key", says 18-year-old Sahil Mukesh Deo who grabbed the seventh spot in the JEE Advanced 2025, the results of which were released on Monday. However, it was no mean feat for Sahil who was quite demotivated after his JEE Mains 2025 exams held in February and April. He had scored an All India Rank of 102. But it was his love for science and motivation by his teachers that kept him going. After securing more than 99 per cent in his 10th boards from Wisdom High International School, Nashik, Sahil, shifted to Mumbai in class 11 to prepare for the JEE Advanced. It was his love for computer applications that made him take up engineering. 'I have always been interested in science especially the application part such as computer science and mathematics. Coding is something that grabbed my attention. Hence CSE at IIT Bombay is a natural choice," the youngster said. He joined Narayana in class 11 for his JEE preparations. While Sahil scored 285 marks in JEE Main session 1, he got 270 marks in session 2. However, he proved that once you set your goals, nothing can stop you and made a comeback in the IIT entrance exam by securing 321 marks out 360 or AIR 7 in JEE Advanced. 'Mains did not go very well for me. The final rank was 102 and I had lost a lot of confidence after that. My teachers really motivated me. They had explained how JEE Mains and Advanced are different exams. Hence, I had to keep myself motivated," Sahil told News18. Talking about his preparation process, he said, 'While I kept no track of how long I studied, I would continue with my preparations at anytime I could. After returning home from classes in the evening, I would relax for sometime, watch some YouTube videos, and then get back to study. Again, take break during dinner time and go back study. It's more about consistency. It's the key. Study whenever you get the chance to and create those opportunities more often. Don't let it slip and think so now I can relax." He had also appeared for Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy Olympiads in 12th standard. 'I was also selected for the Indian National Olympiads in the second level however couldn't crack the third level as I did not really prepare for it," he said. Besides, Sahil also hails from a family of engineers. While his father is an engineer at Mahindra, his brother graduated from IIT Delhi and works at Goldman Sachs. His mother is a housewife. This stark reality is raising serious questions about national priorities. Virendra Grover, a career coach, points out that the Indian Premier League's (IPL) massive revenues alone could fund ten new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), if the money was taxed and redirected toward cites IISc professor's message: 'India doesn't lack money. Indians don't lack money. What we lack is the vision to invest in the future.' This insight hits the core of a growing debate. The professor adds, 'Entertainment is subsidised. Research is taxed,' highlighting the sharp contrast in how India treats its sports and science 2023, the IPL earned ₹11,770 crore, with the BCCI posting a ₹5,120 crore surplus. Over the past three years, profits topped ₹15,000 crore. Yet, the BCCI pays no income tax, thanks to its status as a charitable organisation.'If a simple 40% tax applied just on BCCI's IPL profits, nearly ₹15,000 crore could have been raised over three years—enough to fund 10 new IITs or a national deep-tech innovation corpus,' Shrivastava wrote on LinkedIn. 'Add franchise profits (₹800 to ₹1,200 crore/year), and another ₹320 to ₹480 crore could be collected annually. In total, nearly ₹6,000 crore per year could be redirected into research, just from the IPL ecosystem.'India's research and development spending stands at a mere 0.6–0.7% of GDP. Compare this to the global average of 2.6%, the US at 3.5%, China at 2.4%, and South Korea at 5%. Half of India's R&D budget comes from the government. Private investment remains research labs face additional costs. They pay GST on imported equipment, consumables, and software licenses—expenses that make innovation harder. Grover questions the fairness: 'Why are match tickets tax-free while scientific tools are not? Why do institutions aiming to push India forward struggle for funds?'Shrivastava highlights that it's not only the IPL that enjoys tax exemptions and subsidies. 'Bollywood productions enjoy tax breaks and state subsidies. Religious trusts command vast commercial empires while enjoying full tax exemptions. New sports leagues are given startup tax holidays. If even a fraction of these sectors were taxed modestly, thousands of crores could fund India's scientific foundations.'The BCCI's tax exemption comes from its registration as a charitable organisation whose goal is to promote cricket. But this status faces scrutiny. With IPL's explosive commercial growth, questions arise about whether the BCCI should still be Income Tax Department argued that BCCI's fundamental objectives changed with the commercialisation of IPL. However, in February, the Bombay High Court quashed this advisory, keeping BCCI's tax exemption intact for Grover stresses he is not against sports or entertainment but calls for balance. 'These funds could also support income-building for the poor,' he says. His message to those concerned with inequality is clear: 'Don't question the top 1%. Help others rise.'As India cheers its cricket stars, Grover and Shrivastava urge the country to invest equally in what powers its future—science, research, and education. Redirecting a portion of the IPL's untaxed profits could be a game-changer.
