AI might now be as good as humans at detecting emotion, political leaning and sarcasm in online conversations
But what happens if an artificial intelligence (AI) system is at the other end, rather than a person? Can AI, especially conversational AI, understand the latent meaning in our text? And if so, what does this mean for us?
Latent content analysis is an area of study concerned with uncovering the deeper meanings, sentiments and subtleties embedded in text. For example, this type of analysis can help us grasp political leanings present in communications that are perhaps not obvious to everyone.
Understanding how intense someone's emotions are or whether they're being sarcastic can be crucial in supporting a person's mental health, improving customer service, and even keeping people safe at a national level.

These are only some examples. We can imagine benefits in other areas of life, like social science research, policy-making and business. Given how important these tasks are – and how quickly conversational AI is improving – it's essential to explore what these technologies can (and can't) do in this regard.
Work on this issue is only just starting. Current work shows that ChatGPT has had limited success in detecting political leanings on news websites. Another study that focused on differences in sarcasm detection between different large language models – the technology behind AI chatbots such as ChatGPT – showed that some are better than others.
Finally, a study showed that LLMs can guess the emotional 'valence' of words – the inherent positive or negative 'feeling' associated with them. Our new study published in Scientific Reports tested whether conversational AI, inclusive of GPT-4 – a relatively recent version of ChatGPT – can read between the lines of human-written texts.
The goal was to find out how well LLMs simulate understanding of sentiment, political leaning, emotional intensity and sarcasm – thus encompassing multiple latent meanings in one study. This study evaluated the reliability, consistency and quality of seven LLMs, including GPT-4, Gemini, Llama-3.1-70B and Mixtral 8 × 7B.
We found that these LLMs are about as good as humans at analysing sentiment, political leaning, emotional intensity and sarcasm detection. The study involved 33 human subjects and assessed 100 curated items of text.
For spotting political leanings, GPT-4 was more consistent than humans. That matters in fields like journalism, political science, or public health, where inconsistent judgement can skew findings or miss patterns.
GPT-4 also proved capable of picking up on emotional intensity and especially valence. Whether a tweet was composed by someone who was mildly annoyed or deeply outraged, the AI could tell – although, someone still had to confirm if the AI was correct in its assessment. This was because AI tends to downplay emotions. Sarcasm remained a stumbling block both for humans and machines.
The study found no clear winner there – hence, using human raters doesn't help much with sarcasm detection.
Why does this matter? For one, AI like GPT-4 could dramatically cut the time and cost of analysing large volumes of online content. Social scientists often spend months analysing user-generated text to detect trends. GPT-4, on the other hand, opens the door to faster, more responsive research – especially important during crises, elections or public health emergencies.
Journalists and fact-checkers might also benefit. Tools powered by GPT-4 could help flag emotionally charged or politically slanted posts in real time, giving newsrooms a head start.
There are still concerns. Transparency, fairness and political leanings in AI remain issues. However, studies like this one suggest that when it comes to understanding language, machines are catching up to us fast – and may soon be valuable teammates rather than mere tools.
Although this work doesn't claim conversational AI can replace human raters completely, it does challenge the idea that machines are hopeless at detecting nuance.
Our study's findings do raise follow-up questions. If a user asks the same question of AI in multiple ways – perhaps by subtly rewording prompts, changing the order of information, or tweaking the amount of context provided – will the model's underlying judgements and ratings remain consistent?
Further research should include a systematic and rigorous analysis of how stable the models' outputs are. Ultimately, understanding and improving consistency is essential for deploying LLMs at scale, especially in high-stakes settings.

‘Exciting' new diagnostic method can detect tiny traces of cancer
Scientists have found a new way to find tiny traces of cancer which could help 'revolutionise' care for patients with a certain form of blood cancer. Giving patients a whole-body MRI scan can detect minuscule amounts of myeloma, also known as minimal residue disease, even when traditional tests showed no signs of cancer, researchers found. Usual tests include blood tests and bone marrow biopsies, CT scans and X rays. Experts said that this scanning technique can provide an important insight into how well patients are responding to treatment and whether they might relapse. Myeloma is a type of blood cancer that develops from plasma cells in the bone marrow. The condition is sometimes called multiple myeloma because it affects more than one part of the body. The disease is not considered curable but treatment can control it. Researchers at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and The Institute of Cancer Research, London, tracked 70 myeloma patients who were having a stem cell transplant. They were all given a whole-body MRI before and after the treatment. Writing in the Blood Cancer Journal, experts said that one in three patients had signs of residual disease on whole-body MRI after treatment – which can be given to patients without the use of radiation. Overall survival was also significantly shorter in those with positive MRI findings. The Royal Marsden has already adopted the the whole-body imagine technique and it could help shape cancer care for patients around the country in the future. One patient under the treatment of the hospital described how the scanning technique 'extended his life' and enabled him to 'continue serving' the country. Air Vice-Marshal Fin Monahan, chief fire officer for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, was diagnosed with myeloma in 2009 while serving in the RAF. He has since relapsed twice, but thanks to whole-body MRI scans, his cancer was detected much earlier than would have been possible with a traditional CT scan. The father of three, 57, said: 'With the constant threat of relapse, myeloma patients are in a long-term mental battle with this insidious disease. 'However, being part of the whole-body MRI scan study at the Royal Marsden allowed my cancer to be closely watched and resulted in me being treated sooner than I would have been under normal protocols. 'This not only extended my life but after diagnosis, I returned to flying jets and to active operational duties. 'I would eventually not be allowed to fly on medical grounds due to myeloma but paved the way to establishing the first training programme of Ukrainian forces in 2015 and I was called upon to run Nato air operations after the invasion of Ukraine. 'This cutting-edge treatment not only extended my life but allowed me to continue serving my country.' Study chief investigator, Professor Christina Messiou, consultant radiologist at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, and professor in imaging for personalised oncology at The Institute of Cancer Research, said: 'This study shows that whole-body MRI gives us valuable information about how well the myeloma has responded to treatment that other tests may miss. 'It's exciting that we now have a standardised, non-invasive imaging method that can be used across cancer centres. 'Whole-body MRI doesn't involve radiation or intravenous injections, which is important for patients who may require lifelong monitoring. 'This is an important step towards smarter and kinder precision diagnostics for patients with cancer' Professor Martin Kaiser, consultant haematologist at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and professor in molecular haematology at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, added: 'Access to this gold-standard precision imaging with whole-body MRI has revolutionised care for myeloma patients. Food Insecurity Linked to Rapid Mental Health Deterioration
TOPLINE: Food insecurity predicted and was associated with increased symptoms of anxiety and depression within 1 month, new research showed. However, mental health improved rapidly when food security was restored. METHODOLOGY: Researchers conducted a secondary analysis of Changing Cost of Living Study data for 240 adults from France and 244 adults from the UK between 2022 and 2023. Food insecurity was measured using three items from the United Nations Global Food Insecurity Experience Scale with a 1-week reference period, yielding scores from 0 (food secure) to 3 (severe food insecurity). Anxiety and depression were measured using the seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder questionnaire (GAD-7) and eight-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8) scores, respectively, with reference periods of 2 weeks. Additionally, analyses were conducted 'within individuals' (how a single individual's characteristics change) and 'between individuals' (how individuals differ from each other). TAKEAWAY: Within-individual analysis showed that food-insecure vs food-secure months were associated with increased concurrent symptoms of anxiety (mean standardized GAD-7 score, 0.15; P < .001) and depression (mean standardized PHQ-8 score, 0.11; P = .005). Between-individual analysis showed an even stronger association between food insecurity and poor mental health, with nearly fivefold higher mean standardized scores on the GAD-7 (0.71) and sevenfold higher scores on the PHQ-8 (0.76; P < .001 for both) than those of the within-individual analysis. The associations between food insecurity and poor mental health persisted even after controlling for sex, age, time, and mental health in the previous month. Additional data showed that eliminating food insecurity could potentially reduce clinically-relevant anxiety and depression symptoms by 20.79 and 19.47 percentage points, respectively, in affected populations. IN PRACTICE: 'The effects were rapid, occurring within a month of becoming food insecure, and were equally rapidly reversed,' the investigators wrote. 'Consistent with Granger causality, food insecurity in the current month predicted poorer mental health in the following month after controlling for current mental health,' which supports the hypothesis that food insecurity may cause anxiety and depression symptoms, they added.
