Ex-Blueacorn exec admits to COVID-era small business loan scheme

Aug. 12 (UPI) -- An ex-financial executive is likely to spend years behind bars over wire fraud charges in an alleged pandemic-era financial scheme to defraud the federal government's small business loan program. The U.S. Department of Justice said Monday that Nathan Reis, now of Rio Grande in Puerto Rico by way of Arizona, pleaded guilty in Texas to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud for his role as company chief at Scottsdale-based lender Blueacorn. The plea was tied to attempts to fraudulently obtain relief money via the U.S. Small Business Administration's Paycheck Protection Program during the COVID-19 pandemic. "This defendant had the opportunity to help small businesses overcome tremendous financial hardships during a time of national crisis but instead exploited the system to line his own pockets with taxpayer money," Nancy E. Larson, the acting U.S. attorney for the northern district in Texas, said in a statement. Reis, 47, created the venture in 2020 with his wife, Stephanie Hockridge, a former KNXV television anchor in Phoenix, purportedly to help small businesses and owners to obtain the federal government's PPP loans. "Blueacorn connects technology and financial expertise to help small businesses, independent contractors, self-employed individuals, and gig workers with their financial needs," the company's website reads. In June, Hockridge was found guilty of conspiracy but acquitted on multiple counts of wire fraud. His guilty plea was filed after an initial plea of not guilty. The SBA's Paycheck Protection Program was part of the 2020 CARES Act singed by then-U.S. President Donald Trump during the virus outbreak in his first term. It was targeted to infuse money into small businesses to bankroll payroll and other business-related expenses. According to court documents, Reis conspired with business associates to "submit false and fraudulent PPP loan applications." It included "fabricating documents that falsified income and payroll figures in order to receive loan funds for which they were not eligible." Federal officials contend that Blueacorn was the vehicle through which Reis and co-conspirators submitted an undisclosed number of fraudulent PPP loan applications that, according to the Justice Department, "they knew contained materially false information to make more money." "Reis and others fabricated documents, including tax documents and bank statements," the deparment added. "As part of the conspiracy, Reis and his co-conspirators charged borrower's fees based on a percentage of the funds received." The SBA's well-intended PPP opened the door to waves of other similar acts of fraud. "During a national emergency, this defendant exploited a taxpayer-funded program that individuals and small businesses desperately needed to survive," acting Assistant U.S. Attorney General Matthew Galeotti in DOJ's criminal division, said in a release. The fraud section at Justice has seized nearly $80 million and prosecuted more than 200 defendants in over 130 separate PPP-related criminal cases. In January, seven people were charged by a federal grand jury in a multi-state conspiracy that defrauded more than a half-billion dollars in over 8,000 bogus pandemic-era tax returns. "Reis and others exploited a program meant to keep small businesses afloat during the pandemic," stated Assistant Director Jose A. Perez of the FBI's Criminal Investigative Division. Any individual with info on COVID-related fraud attempts may contact the department. Reis is schedule for sentencing November 21. He faces a max penalty of 20 years in prison contingent upon sentencing guidelines by a federal judge, and $250,000 in fines.

SBA and EPA Announce New Guidance To Ease Diesel Exhaust Mandates for Small Businesses

By GlobeNewswire Published on August 12, 2025, 22:42 IST DES MOINES, Aug. 12, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Administrator Kelly Loeffler joined U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin in Des Moines, Iowa to announce new action to protect American farmers, truckers, and diesel equipment operators from sudden speed and power losses caused by diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) mandates. EPA's new guidance urges engine and equipment manufacturers to revise DEF system software to reduce loss of power and increase time for operators to secure DEF. This will reduce burdensome red tape for small businesses and deliver major cost savings. SBA estimates that this single regulatory action will have an outsized impact on America's family farms – saving them $727 million per year and relieving them of costly downtime, equipment repairs, and DEF-related maintenance. With 1.8 million family farms operating nearly 90% of all U.S. farmland, the benefits of this rule are expected to extend across rural America. 'The Trump Administration is fighting for farmers and truckers, as evidenced by the EPA's new DEF guidance which is a big win for the millions of small businesses who rely on diesel engines – and who have been crushed by years of costly Green New Scam regulations,' said SBA Administrator Loeffler. 'This change will save family farms an estimated $727 million per year and offers vital financial and operational certainty. I'm proud to work alongside EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to reduce red tape for our nation's producers and deliver real relief for hardworking Americans.' 'We have heard loud and clear from small businesses across the United States that the current DEF system is unacceptable. It is unacceptable that farmers, truckers, construction workers, and many other small businesses continually experience failures of diesel-powered equipment when they need it most—costing millions of dollars in lost productivity,' said EPA Administrator Zeldin. 'Today, we are responding to those concerns by calling on manufacturers to take action to update their software and eliminate the unnecessary sudden loss of power and frustrating shutdowns that too many Americans have experienced.' Heritage Grocers Group Elevates Fresh Prepared Foods Strategy with Predictive Analytics to Serve Diverse Communities at Scale

ONTARIO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Heritage Grocers Group (HGG), a leading Hispanic and ethnic food retailer, today announced a strategic transformation in how it plans and produces fresh prepared foods. By shifting from experience-based methods to a cutting-edge, data-driven production planning system, HGG aims to enhance product availability, optimize labor, and better serve the rich diversity of the communities it calls home. "Leveraging predictive analytics, this system will enhance market demand fulfillment and boost sales through optimized product availability and superior customer experience," said Prabash Coswatte, Chief Operating Officer for Heritage Grocers Group. "Leveraging predictive analytics, this system will enhance market demand fulfillment and boost sales through optimized product availability and superior customer experience," said Prabash Coswatte, Chief Operating Officer for Heritage Grocers Group. Headquartered in Ontario, California, HGG operates across six states—California, Texas, Nevada, Arizona, Kansas, and Illinois—under four beloved banners: Cardenas Markets, El Rancho Supermercado, Tony's Fresh Market, and Los Altos Ranch Market. Across these regions, HGG is recognized not only for its extensive fresh offerings, but also for delivering authentic food experiences that resonate with multicultural shoppers. The decision to revamp its production strategy is backed by a compelling insight: multicultural families are driving America's fresh prepared food revolution. According to the International Dairy Deli Bakery Association (IDDBA), 76% of Hispanic, 70% of Asian American, and 69% of African American shoppers purchase prepared foods at grocery stores—compared to just 59% of white/Caucasian shoppers. This trend is fueled by a desire for quick, high-quality meals that reflect cultural traditions and suit the needs of larger family units. 'Fresh prepared isn't just about convenience anymore—it's about cultural connection,' said Coswatte. 'From carnitas and caldo to pan dulce and pozole, our customers are asking for ready-made meals that feel like home. This new system ensures we meet that demand, store by store, hour by hour.' Mike Sanders, CEO of Upshop, the technology partner behind this transformation, added, 'We believe the future of retail excellence lies in the power of AI and a single, unified operations platform. By streamlining forecasting, labor, and production into one intelligent system, we're helping retailers like Heritage Grocers Group move from good to great—maximizing efficiency, minimizing waste, and most importantly, delivering a better experience for every shopper, every day.' What the New System Delivers: Elevated Sales: By improving freshness and minimizing stockouts, HGG ensures customers can find what they need—when they need it. Smarter Demand & Team Planning: Forecasting tools align staffing with actual demand, particularly in service meat and deli departments. Efficiency Gains: Batch processing for cutting and wrapping reduces prep time and allows employees to focus on customer-facing roles. Better Service: Fewer wait times and more consistent product availability enhance the in-store experience. Workforce Optimization: Scheduling is tailored to each store's unique production rhythm, improving labor utilization and employee satisfaction. With multicultural consumers also driving mainstream adoption of global flavors, according to Nielsen, this initiative not only modernizes operations—it secures HGG's leadership position at the heart of America's evolving food landscape. This is more than a systems upgrade. It's a reaffirmation of HGG's belief that culture and technology can—and must—coexist in the aisles where families shop, celebrate, and connect.
