Euro 2025: Portugal stays alive after 89th-minute goal in draw with Italy
The result sent Spain into the quarterfinals from Group B after its earlier 6-2 rout of Belgium which was eliminated from contention.
Italy was joining Spain in the quarterfinals with a lead taken in the 70th on captain Cristiana Girelli's high-class curling shot from 20 meters.
Portugal seemed to have a lifeline in the 80th but Diana Silva's goal was ruled out for an offside spotted after a two-minute video review.
Then Portugal was denied by the crossbar in the 89th when Carole Costa's firm header came back off into play, before the ball was recycled down the left flank for Gomes to earn a crucial point. Gomes met a low cross with a looping shot that eluded Laura Giuliani's dive.
Portugal defender Ana Borges was sent off deep into stoppage time.
Italy is still favored to advance, moving up to four points in the group standings. That is three clear of Portugal but also six better in goal difference which is now the tiebreaker between the two.
In Friday's final round, Italy plays Spain and Portugal faces Belgium. Portugal must find its scoring touch and likely hope free-scoring Spain can beat Italy heavily.
Frantic finish
The frenetic ending was dramatically different to a lackluster first half and a lack of quality in Portugal's play to that point. The 35-year-old Girelli's strike was shaping to be a worthy winning goal.
Portugal gave a start to playmaker Kika Nazareth less than four months after surgery on her left ankle. She had more influence as the game wore on despite her lack of game time.
It was a first half of honest endeavour and too little creativity that sparked a wave around the stadium by both sets of cheerful but restless fans. It rounded the stadium four times and restarted in the 65th.

SUVA, Fiji (AP) — Fiji conceded a try after two minutes but rallied to score four tries and beat 14-man Scotland 29-14 in a one-off test match on Saturday. Scotland was a man down from the 66th minute when winger Darcy Graham was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. Graham was first sent to the sin-bin in the 35th minute for an early tackle. The TMO ruled out a penalty try on that occasion but Fiji immediately scored its first try through captain Tevita Ikanivere. The second yellow card came when Graham was ruled to have deliberately impeded Fiji and prevented a certain try from being scored. The penalty try that resulted gave Fiji its final 15-point margin. Scotland also lost hooker Ewan Ashman to a yellow card in the ninth minute in an undisciplined performance. Winger Kyle Rowe scored the first try of the match only two minutes after the kickoff and New Zealand-born flyhalf Fergus Burke converted for a 7-0 lead. Fiji, which lost 21-18 to Australia last weekend, narrowed the lead with a penalty to flyhalf Caleb Muntz in the 20th minute, then took its first lead at 8-7 with Ikanivere's try. Kalaveti Ravouvou sawed through the Scotland defense to score in the 39th minute and Fiji took a 15-7 lead to halftime. Scotland opened the second half with a slick try to center Tom Jordan, converted by Burke, which cut the lead to a point at 15-14. Fiji replied with a superb try to the Toulon winger and Olympic sevens gold medalist Jiuta Wainiqolo to increase its lead to 22-14 before the penalty try sealed its win. The win was Fiji's second over Scotland in five official tests and adds evidence that Fiji deserves to be included among the top 12 nations in world rugby in next year's inaugural Nations Cup. Angels slip past Diamondbacks 6-5 on d'Arnaud's RBI single in ninth

(AP) — Travis d'Arnaud hit a pinch-hit RBI single down the left-field line in the ninth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a 6-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night. Logan O'Hoppe was hit by a pitch with one out against left-hander Kyle Backhus (0-1) before Luis Rengifo singled and d'Arnaud delivered in place of Gustavo Campero. Zach Neto and Yoan Moncada each hit home runs in the first inning for the Angels, while Nolan Schanuel and Rengifo each had three hits as LA improved to 7-3 against NL West teams this season. Randal Grichuk hit a pair of home runs and drove in three runs as the Diamondbacks dropped to 3-7 since July 2. (AP) — Max Scherzer struck out eight batters and allowed five hits over six innings to win for the first time in nearly a year, and the Toronto Blue Jays scored six unearned runs in the fifth inning to beat the Athletics 7-6 on Friday night The AL East-leading Blue Jays have won 13 of their last 15 games. Scherzer (1-0) became the first Toronto pitcher 40 years and older to win since R.A. Dickey on May 4, 2015, and fifth in team history. It also was the first victory for the three-time Cy Young Award winner since he and the Texas Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 on July 25 of last year. Toronto first baseball Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled with one out in the fifth for his 1,000th career hit.
