Bezos wedding in Venice draws Greenpeace protest

Times of Oman11 hours ago

Venice: Greenpeace on Monday became the latest group to protest the lavish wedding Amazon owner Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez have planned in Venice.
Members of the environmental organisation and British group "Everyone Hates Elon" unfolded a giant banner in central St Mark's Square with a picture of Bezos laughing and a sign reading: "If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax."
It is the latest protest against this week's multi-day event, expected to attract some 200 guests, including US President Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka, and son-in-law Jared Kushner, as well as celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Kylie Jenner, and Kim Kardashian, and billionaires Eric Schmidt of Google and Bill Gates of Microsoft.
Mayor Luigi Brugnaro and regional Governor Luca Zaia believe the wedding will help local businesses by boosting the economy.
Zaia said the celebrations were expected to cost €20 to €30 million ($23-$34 million).
Why are activists protesting against the Bezos-Sanchez wedding?
Local anti-tourism activists said they were determined to disrupt the festivities, saying city bosses were prioritizing tourism over resident needs.
They have already hung anti-Bezos banners from the city's famous Rialto Bridge reading "No space for Bezos!"
"Bezos arrogantly believes he can take over the city and turn it into his own private party venue," said Tommaso Cacciari, from the "No space for Bezos" campaign.
Greenpeace said it wanted to draw attention to the low taxes many billionaires pay, while allegedly exacerbating the climate crisis through their unsustainable lifestyles.
"The problem is not the wedding, the problem is the system. We think that one big billionaire can't rent a city for his pleasure," Simona Abbate, one of the protesters on Monday said.
Bezos-Sanchez nuptials set for later this week
According to Italian daily Corriere della Sera, more than 90 private jets carrying celebrity guests are expected to land at Venice's Marco Polo Airport in the coming days.
While the exact date of the wedding remains confidential, celebrations are expected to span three days, likely from June 26 to 28. The wedding party is reportedly set to take over the entire island of San Giorgio, located across from St. Mark's Square, where the Greenpeace protest took place. However, the specific location of the ceremony itself has not been disclosed.
It is also unclear when Bezos and Sanchez will arrive, though reports suggest they will stay at the Aman Venice, a luxury hotel on the Grand Canal where George and Amal Clooney stayed during their 2014 wedding.
Bezos will also make sizable charity donations, including €1 million euros for Corila, an academic consortium that studies Venice's lagoon ecosystem.
The wedding comes at the height of tourism season in the fragile city that has long been overrun with visitors.
Venice has already reintroduced an entry fee this year, which was piloted last year for day-trippers. They will have to pay between €5 and €10 to enter the city during the peak season.
About 49,000 people live in Venice's historic city centre. According to various estimates, more than 20 million tourists visit the city each year.

Venetians say ‘I Don't' to Bezos wedding bash

Venice — Amazon founder and space dreamer Jeff Bezos may soon say 'I do' in one of the world's most romantic cities, but not everyone in Venice is throwing confetti. Bezos, who is set to marry Lauren Sánchez this week on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, has found himself at the centre of a spirited local protest — with Venetians reminding the billionaire that their historic city isn't just a backdrop for celebrity weddings. Venice's famously fed-up residents have plastered posters across landmarks like the Rialto Bridge and St Mark's Square with the blunt message: 'No Space for Bezos.' Environmental group Greenpeace joined the party too — with a giant banner at Piazza San Marco reading: 'If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax.' Their social media post pulled no punches either: 'Jeff Bezos pays poverty wages and dodges tax. No wonder he can afford to shut down half of Venice for his wedding this week. Tax billionaires NOW.' Meanwhile, the guest list for this star-studded affair reads like a Who's Who of Hollywood and high society: George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, Ivanka Trump, Barbra Streisand, Kim Kardashian, Robert Pattinson and Suki Waterhouse are all expected to toast the happy couple among Venice's canals. But while locals grumble about crowds and tax bills, City Hall is rolling out the red carpet. Officials insist Venice is used to big names and even bigger events — from the G7 to the Venice Biennale — and say most Venetians are thrilled their city is once again in the spotlight. Bezos and Sánchez, for their part, plan to weave local traditions into their nuptials, hoping a splash of Venetian culture might smooth over any protest drama. One thing's for sure: in a city already overrun by tourists, even a wedding can become a battle cry — especially when the groom is worth more than US$200bn.

Hardeep Singh Puri remembers victims of Air India Kanishka bombing on 40th Anniversary

Cork [Ireland]: Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, remembers victims of the Air India Kanishka Bombing on the 40th Anniversary and calls on the international community to unite against terrorism. Speaking at the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Air India Flight 182 (Kanishka) bombing in Ahakista, Cork, Ireland, Puri said, "he world needs to come together - not only in isolated episodes of solemn mourning such as these, but in collective, proactive efforts to combat terrorism." Recalling the tragedy of June 23, 1985, when Air India Flight 182 was destroyed mid-air by a bomb planted by Canada-based terrorists, killing all 329 on board, including over 80 children, Puri said the tragedy was not an accident but a "deliberate, heinous act carried out by fringe elements seeking to divide India." The Minister stressed that terrorism and extremism are not issues of the past but present-day threats that continue to endanger innocent lives across the world. "India has suffered the scourge of terrorism for decades -- from Jammu & Kashmir to Punjab to Mumbai. Time and again, our people have endured bombings, assassinations, and atrocities," he said, while noting that countries across the world are grappling with this problem as he highlighted that global terrorism-related deaths increased by 22 per cent in 2024. Calling upon the Government of Canada to join India in countering this shared threat, Puri said: "Canada is a valued partner and friend. We share vibrant cultural and economic relations with each other. India and Canada are bound by democratic traditions." He urged deeper collaboration between the two nations through intelligence sharing, counter-radicalisation efforts, and the disruption of terror financing. "India stands ready to do more. Our security agencies, intelligence apparatus, and diplomatic channels are fully committed to partnering with the world to ensure that such tragedies are never repeated." Puri also acknowledged and thanked the people of Ahakista and the Irish government for their compassion in the aftermath of the 1985 tragedy. "They opened their homes and hearts to grieving families--an act of humanity that continues to inspire." He further noted that the unique friendship forged between India and Ireland in the wake of the disaster has blossomed into strong bilateral ties, with trade reaching nearly $16 billion in 2023. In closing, the Minister reiterated India's unwavering resolve to honour the memory of the victims by striving for global peace and security. "Let today's commemoration be a united message--those who spread hate and terror will never prevail over humanity, democracy, and friendship." The ceremony was attended by Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, Canadian Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree, local Irish officials, first responders, and families of victims, all coming together in solemn remembrance.
