CKAF unite for statewide pen-down Aug 22 strike, demands pay revision
The federation warned that if the govt fails to respond, employees may launch an indefinite strike. Unions across departments and districts have pledged support, demanding DA from the due date, dearness relief, parity in pay, time-bound promotions, regularisation of workers, medical facilities, and an increase in retirement age.
Federation members said that the proposed pen-down, work-down strike is receiving widespread support across the state.
In a joint statement, CKAF conveners Kamal Verma, G R Chandra, Rajesh Chatterjee, B P Sharma, Chandrashekhar Tiwari, Sanjay Singh Thakur, and Rohit Tiwari said a meeting was held in Raipur with the state heads of various employees' unions. During the meeting, district supervisors reported on the preparations for the protest, noting the consensus and enthusiasm among employees.
Unions representing urban bodies, universities, contract workers, and daily-wage employees have also given written consent to join the strike by taking mass leave, they said.

The state heads at the meeting urged the govt to discuss and resolve their demands soon.
Federation officials said that for years, employees have been submitting memorandums and holding democratic protests for their legitimate demands. However, they said there was no positive response from the state govt on the 'Modi Ki Guarantee' promises. This has compelled them to consider an indefinite strike, they added.
When asked about Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai's announcement on Tuesday of a 2% hike in dearness allowance for Chhattisgarh's officers and employees—a key demand of the workforce—Kamal Verma said the CKAF will go ahead with its planned strike on Aug 22.
With this increase, employees will now receive 55% DA, bringing it at par with the central govt.
"We demand a DA hike from Jan 2025, which is the due date, and the state govt has yet to take a decision on it. Unless we have a meeting with the state govt on the DA due date and other pending demands, we will not call off our proposed strike," Verma told TOI.

UP govt signs MoU with UK for Chevening scholarship for study at Britain's top varsities
The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United Kingdom's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) for the 'Chevening-Atal Bihari Vajpayee Uttar Pradesh State Government Scholarship Scheme' under which five meritorious students from the state will pursue master's degrees at Britain's leading universities every year. The agreement was signed in Lucknow by British High Commissioner to India, Lindy Cameron, in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The UP Cabinet had recently approved the proposal for the scholarship scheme. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Adityanath said this scholarship scheme will serve as a powerful platform to transform the state's education system and prepare the youth for global leadership roles. The scheme, he emphasised, aimed to enable meritorious students to achieve excellence in education, research, and leadership at the international level. The programme will commence from the academic session 2025-26 and run for three years, with the possibility of renewal from the 2028-29 session. The CM urged the students to 'seize this opportunity and enhance the pride of both the state and the country'. The scholarship covers tuition, examination and research fees, living allowances, and airfare to and from the UK. The total cost per student is estimated to be £38,048 to £42,076 (Rs 45–48 lakh), with the state government contributing around £19,800 (Rs 23 lakh) and the remainder funded by the FCDO. The British High Commissioner highlighted that under the scholarship scheme, five students will receive full scholarships to study in the UK each year for the next three years. This initiative reflects the strengthening ties between India and the UK, an official statement said, adding this comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the UK, where he had signed the Trade Agreement and Vision 35, opening new avenues for business and education. On August 7, the state Cabinet had given nod to the draft proposal titled 'Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee-Chevening Uttar Pradesh State Government Scholarship Scheme'. The government then announced that the scholarship will provide for students' stay and study at top UK institutions like the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, and the Landon School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). UP Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay then had stated the scheme will be renewed or extended thereafter. He had also said the funding will be equally shared by the state government and FCDO. The state government has cleared Rs 2 crore for the current financial year for the programme, it is learnt.

Akhil Gogoi launches ‘Jatiya Jagaran Yatra' from Rang Ghar with eye on '26 polls
1 2 Dibrugarh: Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi on Tuesday launched his party's ambitious "Jatiya Jagaran Yatra" from the historic Rang Ghar in Sivasagar town, marking what he described as the beginning of his party's campaign for the 2026 Assam assembly elections. Speaking to reporters, Gogoi declared the yatra as the "poll bugle for 2026 Assam assembly election" and outlined his vision for a transformed Assam under Raijor Dal's leadership. "This Yatra is meant to build a new Assam and unite the people of the state. Our aim is to defeat the BJP and throw them into the Brahmaputra. I appeal to everyone to join this movement for change," Gogoi said. The Yatra will initially focus on Sivasagar district for 15 days before proceeding to Sadiya in Tinsukia district and returning to Sivasagar, covering significant portions of upper Assam. At the heart of Gogoi's campaign lies a comprehensive 10-point agenda that addresses some of Assam's most contentious political issues. The most significant proposal involves granting ST status to six communities — Tai Ahoms, Mottocks, Koch Rajbongshis, Sooteas, Morans, and Tea Tribes. "We will also strive for ST status for three more communities of Assam, namely Kalita, Nath-Jogi and Modahi. This will automatically convert Assam into a tribal state, which will permanently protect the rights of the indigenous people of Assam," Gogoi said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Benefits of Trading Bitcoin CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo On the sensitive issue of illegal migration, Gogoi promised to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) recommendations without religious discrimination. "Illegal migrants, whether they are Hindu, Muslims, Christians, or from any other community, will be deported, while legal citizens will be given proper identification cards," he stated. The Raijor Dal leader also pledged to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, which promises constitutional, legislative, and administrative safeguards to protect the cultural, social, linguistic identity, and heritage of the Assamese people. Additionally, he proposed securing Article 371A status for Assam, similar to Nagaland's special constitutional provisions. "Article 371A will provide Assam with the necessary protections for our unique cultural and social practices, including customary laws and land ownership rights," Gogoi said. The party's economic agenda includes ambitious plans for agricultural and industrial development. Gogoi promised 100% irrigation facilities for farmers across the state and the establishment of industrial units in every village to generate employment opportunities. Karnataka child marriage figures show marginal dip in 2024-25
Mysuru: Incidents of child marriage continue to be high in Karnataka, with 700 cases reported in 2024-25. Though this shows a roughly 3% dip in cases compared to the previous fiscal, the overall numbers are still quite alarming. A district-wise breakup put Shivamogga, Belagavi, and Chitradurga in the top three, with Mysuru and Mandya in the fifth and sixth positions, respectively. Laxmi Hebbalkar, the women and child development minister, said in the assembly last week that in 2023-24, about 719 child marriages took place in the state. This year, between April and June 2025, the state reported 211 cases. The minister, in her reply to a query on the measures taken by the department to prevent child marriages, said senior police and district administrative officials have been instructed to take necessary action to prevent child marriages. The govt has initiated measures to run awareness drives on KSRTC and BMTC buses to prevent child marriages. As a deterrent to tackle the scourge, a draft amendment bill 2025 has been prepared, which has been approved by the cabinet. The bill seeks to criminalise even acts such as attempts, preparations, and engagements for child marriage. Presently, the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, doesn't allow the police to register complaints on these grounds. President of the Child Welfare Committee, Mysuru, M Ravichandra, told TOI in all cases of child marriage, an FIR is registered against the parents and relatives. If a minor girl is physically abused, then the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act are invoked. Elopement is also a reason behind child marriages, with parents marrying off the minors fearing social stigma and ostracism, the president explained. Jasheela, a counsellor at Santwana Kendra at HD Kote in Mysuru, claimed cases of child marriage are high among economically weaker families. Two girls, both 17, who were believed to be in a relationship, were rescued recently before their families could marry them off, she said. Mandya DCPO S Rashmi claimed efforts are on to prevent child marriage at all levels. According to Rashmi, the efforts have already yielded favourable results, as the number of cases of child marriage have come down.
