Liam Jacobs sworn in as councillor in City of Joburg Council

Eyewitness News9 hours ago
JOHANNESBURG - Patriotic Alliance (PA) member Liam Jacobs has been sworn in as a councillor in the Johannesburg City Council.
The 24-year-old replaces the party's suspended deputy leader, Kenny Kunene, who resigned as a councillor and was recalled as Transport MMC last month.
Kunene's political downfall came after he was found at the home of murder-accused businessman Katiso "KT" Molefe last month.
Molefe is currently behind bars for allegedly orchestrating the murder of Oupa Sefoka, commonly known as DJ Sumbody.

Jacobs recently resigned from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and left his seat in Parliament to join the PA, a move he announced on Facebook Live alongside PA leader Gayton McKenzie.
The party initially deployed Jacobs to the City of Tshwane and named him as its mayoral candidate for next year's local government elections.
However, after Kunene's latest scandal, Jacobs was reassigned to the City of Joburg Council as his replacement.
It remains unclear whether Jacobs will also take up the role of MMC for Transport, a position left vacant after Kunene was recalled by his party.
While Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero made changes to his mayoral committee on Thursday, he made no mention of the transport portfolio.

'Hypocrite': Gayton McKenzie dragged over 'racist' comments

Gayton McKenzie has been branded a 'hypocrite' over his bid for the hosts of the Open Chats Podcast to be cancelled for their 'racist' comments about coloured people. The Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, who is also the leader of the Patriotic Alliance, has condemned the show, which has since been dropped by DStv. The podcast has faced backlash from political parties, high-profile people and the public over claims it perpetuated racial stereotypes. On his X account, Gayton McKenzie called out Open Chats Podcast co-hosts Mthokozisi Donald and Sino Kama and their two female guests. Shortly after DStv shared news that they had dropped the show from their programming, the minister hinted at the presenters being cancelled over their comments. He posted: 'No one wants to see young people destroyed. It, is however, a teachable moment for these young people and their peers that racism has no place in South Africa, to let them continue as if nothing happened is the surest way of destroying them. He added: 'Consequence is a great teacher.' A day earlier, the Gayton vowed to take legal action against the Open Chats Podcast and its broadcaster. He said in a Facebook Live: 'Whoever is in charge of content control didnt see something wrong. 'We are giving you seven days to cancel that show. …You are going to learn. This is where we draw the line'. Senior PA leader Liam Jacobs later opened a case of hate speech and crimen injuria against the podcast presenters. Gayton McKenzie's social media comments about the Open Chats Podcast's presenters became a trending topic. Many South Africans called out the minister for being a 'hyopcrite' for calling out selective racism. Some recalled how he called for South Africans not to 'cancel' former DA MP Renaldo Gouws whose old K-word YouTube videos recently resurfaced. Others pulled up clips of Gayton discussing black people with comments seasoned with racist undertones. Some even reminded fellow South Africans that he was a convicted criminal. Video: Manhunt for fugitive after Roodepoort cops killed in CBD

Police are urging the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of Zimbabwean national Jabulani Moyo after a fatal shooting of two police officers in the Roodepoort CBD this morning. According to Roodepoort Record, provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that a manhunt has been launched for the suspect, who is believed to have shot and killed the officers while they were transporting him back to prison from the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court after he appeared in connection with a 2023 business robbery. Roodepoort Record earlier reported that, according to Masondo, one of the officers was based at Roodepoort Police Station and the other at Florida, and that they collected the suspect from a prison in Boksburg. 'The two police officers, a sergeant and a warrant officer, were shot at and disarmed. The sergeant was certified dead on the crime scene, while the warrant officer was taken to hospital, where he was certified dead on arrival. 'Moyo was seen driving the police vehicle that was later found abandoned a few kilometres from the crime scene.' Police are appealing to anyone with information that can assist in the investigation or help in the apprehension of the suspect to contact the nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Information can also be given anonymously via the MySAPS app, which can be downloaded to any smartphone. 'We do not yet know if anyone else was involved in the shooting, but we can confirm that both officers' firearms are missing,' Masondo said earlier. KWAMAKHUTHA is one of four areas in KwaZulu-Natal that have been equipped with mobile police stations as part of an ongoing initiative to bolster resources in the fight against crime. KwaMakhutha, Inanda, Bulwer, and KwaMbomambi have been identified as crime hotspots, and the newly deployed mobile satellite police stations are expected to play a strategic role in enhancing police visibility and accessibility in these areas. The KwaMakhutha policing precinct covers a large area and has long been affected by persistent violent crimes, many of which remain unsolved. Each mobile unit, valued at R1.7m, is fully equipped with a holding cell, a toilet, an office, and a kitchenette. Ntuli said the rollout of mobile stations was a direct response to concerns raised by community members who cited the lack of nearby police infrastructure, which often forced them to travel long distances to seek assistance. Also read: Learners killed in KwaMakhutha 'We want to see measurable crime prevention interventions in our province to ensure that we defeat the scourge of crime. We are working around the clock to establish functional community safety structures in our province to augment the work of law enforcement agencies,' said Ntuli. He noted that last year, the department handed over 36 vehicles to the police to close the gap created by resource shortages. Ntuli also appealed to the private sector to support voluntary community crime-fighting structures financially to help intensify the fight against crime.
