KwaMakhutha gets mobile police station

KZN Premier Thami Ntuli, who also serves as the province's MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Liaison, officially handed over new mobile units at a ceremony in Mayville on August 6. KwaMakhutha, Inanda, Bulwer, and KwaMbomambi have been identified as crime hotspots, and the newly deployed mobile satellite police stations are expected to play a strategic role in enhancing police visibility and accessibility in these areas. The KwaMakhutha policing precinct covers a large area and has long been affected by persistent violent crimes, many of which remain unsolved.
Each mobile unit, valued at R1.7m, is fully equipped with a holding cell, a toilet, an office, and a kitchenette.
Ntuli said the rollout of mobile stations was a direct response to concerns raised by community members who cited the lack of nearby police infrastructure, which often forced them to travel long distances to seek assistance.

'We want to see measurable crime prevention interventions in our province to ensure that we defeat the scourge of crime. We are working around the clock to establish functional community safety structures in our province to augment the work of law enforcement agencies,' said Ntuli.
He noted that last year, the department handed over 36 vehicles to the police to close the gap created by resource shortages. Ntuli also appealed to the private sector to support voluntary community crime-fighting structures financially to help intensify the fight against crime.

Kenny Kunene has publicly defended Gayton McKenzie after old tweets of the Patriotic Alliance leader using the K-word recently resurfaced. He's even gone as far as to accuse the public of starting a smear campaign against his friend and business partner. This comes after the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture criticised the Open Chats Podcast's hosts over their racial comments amid their comments about coloured people. Kenny posted: 'This man [Gayton McKenzie] has never been, is not, and will never be a racist. His mother is a South Sotho woman from Batho, [a] location in Mangaung, and his father is coloured. I know him better than all of you. 'Even in prison, he brought a team together for [an] expose made up of Black, White, Indian, and Coloured inmates'. Kenny went on to claim that the PA would be taking the podcast presents to South Africa's Equity Court. When asked to explain the context of Gayton's K-word X posts, Kenny replied: 'He is quoting Gandhi to illustrate how black people are viewed by others, including Gandhi.' Kenny added, 'He is discouraging the labeling of successful black business people. I said the same thing to the New York Times in 2011. He took it from me.' Kenny Kunene's claims that Gayton McKenzie is not racist were met with disbelief amid a clip of the latter confessing to being just that. In the video – taken last year, after he was sworn in as minister – Gayton confessed to his controversial past. Speaking at a public event, Gayton conceded: 'I was the biggest racist you could ever find. I hated white people with a passion. Residents filmed the incident trying to gather concrete evidence against the father who had been allegedly assaulting the young girl physically and sexually. According to her, the individual stated she had reported the assault of the young girl to the mother several times before the incident earlier this week. 'The person said: 'This man [the child's father] would basically say we are jealous of his relationship and he would come back and torment us',' James explained. The individual told the politician that they did not merely film the incident without taking action. 'The person said that: 'While I was taking the video. The other people were trying to call the mother, and we called SAPS. So, while we were waiting for SAPS to come, we tried to call people but there was no one. The yard was quiet. This guy was like the devil himself',' James explained. She agreed with the individual: 'I can believe it because if I look at this little girl's body. When I look at how he bit her and strangled her. I can believe he was like the devil,' James said with her eyes closed. Since being posted, the video has been viewed nearly 22,000 times with over 300 likes on TikTok. On Friday evening, police confirmed the little girl's death. This was after the child's 32-year-old father appeared in the Protea Magistrate's Court earlier during the day, facing charges of attempted murder in connection with his daughter. The charges have now been changed from attempted murder to murder.

Teenager on school outing missing at Durban beach
A search operation is underway at Wedge Beach in Durban after a 16-year-old male teenager was reported missing in the surf zone on Friday evening, 8 August. According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), the teenager was believed to be part of a local school outing when he went missing around 18:08. The NSRI Durban duty crew, KZN Surf Rescue Network, Police Search and Rescue, Metro Police Search and Rescue, and the SA Police Services responded swiftly to the scene. The NSRI rescue craft Spirit of Surfski 6 was launched, and an extensive sea and shoreline search was conducted throughout the night. Despite their efforts, no sign of the missing teen has been found. The search resumed on Saturday morning and remains ongoing. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, and the SAPS have launched an investigation. 'Thoughts, care and compassion are with the family and friends of the missing teenager during this incredibly difficult time,' the NSRI said in a statement.
