2025 Texas A&M Football Predictions: Aggies Ranked 20th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136

This isn't your average college football ranking.
My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list:
Who do I think is good?
Why do I think they're good?
What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations?
Here is a look at where Texas A&M lands in my Ultimate 136.
Texas A&M Aggies ranking: 20
Last year's ranking: 22
Top player: QB Marcel Reed: Responsible for 22 TDs last season (15 pass, 7 rush), ranking second among all SEC freshmen; led all SEC QBs in yards per carry with 4.7.

RJ's take: Despite a 1-4 finish, Mike Elko's program won eight games with two losses to programs who ended up in the semifinals of the 2024 College Football Playoff. But Elko has added playmakers at wideout in former Texas Tech WR Micah Hudson, North Carolina State WR KC Concepcion and Mississippi State WR Mario Craver for Reed to provide service.

And then there's Brady Hart, who's going to be "All He's Scout Team Phenom." He'll be like nectar to a Greek god for broadcasters, who will reach for this story like Bacchus for a fruity IPA at a brewery with the bacchanal broskis.
It's not every year that a 6-foot-5, 185-pound true freshman walks onto campus at age 16. But after throwing for more than 7,900 yards with 81 touchdowns, including 508 yards passing in a Florida 2A semifinal against Cardinal Mooney (Florida) — I would not be shocked to find him taking snaps in earnest if Marcel Reed doesn't show he should keep the job come fall. The QB room has a total of eight in an A&M jersey — all by Reed. If he goes down or starts slow, seventh-year QB Jacob Zeno might be the next man behind center, but he has passed for just 4,948 yards, 32 touchdowns and 18 picks in 30 games.

2027 4-star OT out of Tyler, Texas has committed to Texas A&M
Texas A&M's 2027 recruiting class already includes four-star quarterback Jayce Johnson, who became the first commit in the cycle, and possesses all the traits to be the Aggies' next starting quarterback in the near future. Coach Mike Elko and his staff are on quite a heater, landing 27 commits in the 2026 class, and have now secured a commitment from one of the top offensive tackles in the 2027 class. On Tuesday afternoon, it was revealed that four-star OT DeMarrion Johnson out of Tyler, Texas, has committed to Texas A&M over several blue-blood programs, including Alabama and Florida. Johnson has been the starting left tackle since his 2023 freshman season, which is a clear sign that he is destined for great things at the next level. Already a refined run blocker, utilizing his athleticism and 6'7", 300-pound frame, O-line coach Adam Cushing has continued to develop strong relationships with some of the top offensive line prospects in every cycle, resulting in six offensive line signees in the 2025 class. Right now, the future at left tackle could be 2025 five-star freshman tackle Lamont Rogers, but that is still up for debate given his position versatility. Still, knowing that senior left tackle Trey Zuhn III will be departing after the 2025 season, landing Johnson this early in the process prepares the staff for the future. Johnson's commitment continues to prove that Texas A&M remains one of the top landing spots for offensive line development. According to 247Sports, Johnson is currently positioned as the 135th-ranked prospect in the class, the 12th-ranked tackle, and the 24th-ranked prospect in Texas. CFP Bracket Watch: No. 1 Texas would be among 4 from SEC in 12-team field based on preseason poll
Texas, Penn State, Ohio State and Clemson would be the top four seeds in the College Football Playoff based on The Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll with Georgia, Notre Dame, Oregon and Alabama hosting first-round games. The first poll-based bracket includes four teams from the Southeastern Conference, three from the Big Ten, two from Atlantic Coast Conference, one from the Big 12, one from the Mountain West and one independent. Based on the preseason Top 25 rankings, the CFP would open like this: — No. 9 seed LSU at No. 8 seed Alabama. Winner vs. No. 1 Texas in the Sugar Bowl. — No. 12 seed Boise State at No. 5 seed Georgia. Winner vs. No. 4 Clemson in the Orange Bowl. — No. 10 seed Miami at No. 7 seed Oregon. Winner vs. No. 2 Penn State in the Rose Bowl. — No. 11 seed Arizona State at No. 6 seed Notre Dame. Winner vs. No. 3 Ohio State at the Cotton Bowl. The first three teams outside the bracket: Illinois, South Carolina, Michigan. The Illini are ranked No. 12 by the AP but would get bumped by the fifth conference champion, which in this case would be Boise State, which is No. 25 in the poll. The AP will publish brackets based on the weekly Top 25 until the CFP selection committee unveils its initial rankings in early November. The five highest-ranked conference champions will automatically qualify for the CFP, but no longer will the four highest-ranked champions receive a first-round bye. The 12-team bracket is now seeded directly based on the CFP's final rankings, with the four highest-ranked teams receiving a first-round bye. There still could be the same sort of shuffling seen last season when CFP No. 16 Clemson was seeded 12th in the bracket after winning the Atlantic Coast Conference. The four highest-ranked teams will be assigned to quarterfinals in ranking order and in consideration of current bowl relationships. For example, if the highest-ranked team is from the SEC, that team would be assigned to the Sugar Bowl. This year, quarterfinal winners advance to the semifinals at the Fiesta Bowl and the Peach Bowl. The No. 1 seed would receive preferential placement based on geography. Teams ranked Nos. 5-12 by the CFP will play in the first round, with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other sites designated by the higher-seeded school. First-round games are Dec. 19 and 20, quarterfinals Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, semifinals Jan. 8 and 9 and the championship game is Jan. 19 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Texas makes history as first No. 1 college football team to be Week 1 underdog for Ohio State showdown

The No. 1-rated Texas Longhorns are coming into the first week of the season as betting underdogs when they face the reigning champion Ohio State Buckeyes on Aug. 30. Ohio State is favored by 2.5 points across the entire betting market, with the total coming in at 48 points for what could be a shootout. This marks the first time the No. 1 team is opening its season as an underdog, according to ESPN's data dating back to 1978. The No. 3 Buckeyes opened as three-point favorites, and some money has come in slightly on the Longhorns to move the line a bit. With the Buckeyes playing host for this noon ET game, it's reasonable to suspect that if these two teams faced off on a neutral field this game would be a pick 'em. Big names will be littered throughout the gridiron on that late August day, although this matchup between top-three teams — separated by No. 2 Penn State in the rankings — is the headliner. The Longhorns should be a highly formidable team this season thanks to their star quarterback Arch Manning, who many have projected will be the No. 1 overall pick if he enters the 2026 NFL Draft. Betting on the NFL? Should he stay for the 2026 season, he will be competing for the top spot in the 2027 NFL Draft along with Ohio State star sophomore receiver Jeremiah Smith. These two players profile as some of the best players in college football while playing with excellent supporting casts, and surely the popcorn will be ready at Ohio Stadium.
