Caste survey important, it's matter of survival, leaders tell Vokkaligas
Leaders say the exercise is not political, but a matter of survival and recognition for one of Karnataka's most influential groups.
An important community awareness exercise is scheduled for Monday.
'There are two parallel surveys, one by the Centre and another by the State, and the Vokkaliga community must be prepared to face both with clarity,' said a leading Vokkaliga activist, KG Kumar, who was at the forefront of protests against the Kantharaj Commission.
Highlighting the complexities, he rattled off a long list of sub-castes: 'Dasa Vokkaliga, Marasu Vokkaliga, Kunchatiga Vokkaliga, Musku Vokkaliga, Namdaari Vokkaliga, Halakki Vokkaliga, Reddy Vokkaliga, Hallikar Vokkaliga, Arebhashe Vokkaliga, Bhanta Vokkaliga, Kapu Vokkaliga and the largest of all, Gangadikar Vokkaliga. There are many sub-castes, of which the numbers are officially notified.'
Community members said Vokkaligas are present south of Chitradurga right up to Chamanarajnagar, including the coastal districts. The organisers stressed that the effort is a community initiative, and warned against confusion.
'Some people have been wrongly told to write 'Hindu Vokkaliga'. That is incorrect, they must write 'Vokkaliga', not the sub-caste,' the activist said.
Determined not to be undercounted
However, he clarified that certain highly backward groups within the Vokkaligas, such as Uppina Kolaga Vokkaliga and Sarpa Vokkaliga, should mention their sub-caste to safeguard their status. Community members explained that while there are a large number of Vokkaligas in Karnataka, their numbers could appear small if they don't mention who they are.
With the census expected to have far-reaching consequences on reservation, resources and political representation, Vokkaligas appear determined not to be undercounted.

'Committed to speedy reforms': PM Modi chairs key business meet; next-generation GST reforms discussed
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday chaired a high-level meeting with senior ministers, secretaries and economists to discuss the roadmap for 'next-generation reforms' and a revision of GST laws. Sharing a post on X, the Prime Minister said, 'Chaired a meeting to discuss the roadmap for Next-Generation Reforms.' 'We are committed to speedy reforms across all sectors, which will boost Ease of Living, Ease of Doing Business and prosperity,' he added. The meeting was attended by Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Piyush Goyal and Lalan Singh. This high level meeting came after PM Modi's Independence Day address, where he promised a 'Diwali gift' in the form of GST reforms and a lighter tax burden. 'This Diwali, I am going to make it a double Diwali for you... Over the past eight years, we have undertaken a major reform in GST... We are bringing next-generation GST reforms. This will reduce the tax burden across the country,' he said, ensuring that these reforms directly benefit citizens and stimulate economic activity. Following his announcement, the Centre rolled out a draft blueprint for GST 2.0, proposing two primary tax slabs, 5% for essential items and 18% for most other goods, to simplify the system and ease compliance. Currently, the GST framework has five slabs—nil, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%—with additional rates of 0.25% and 3% on precious metals. PM Modi also announced the formation of a Task Force for next-generation reforms, which will review existing laws, rules and procedures related to economic activities. The timing of these announcements is significant, as they come amid heightened trade tensions with the United States. US President Donald Trump slapped India with an additional 'penalty' tariff of 25% on all Indian imports, on top of the 25% duty already in place, citing India's continued purchase of Russian oil. While the 25% rate took effect from August 7, 2025, the newly announced additional tariff will come into place August 27. In response, the ministry of external affairs called the move "unfortunate" and reiterated its stand that India would continue to protect its "own national interest." Parliamentary proceedings: Guwahati to get new IIM
The Central government will set up an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, Assam, with the introduction of The Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, on Monday in the Lok Sabha. The Bill was introduced by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. According to the draft law, the Centre, State government of Assam and representatives of the United Liberation Front of Assam have signed a Memorandum of Settlement for the 'all-round development of Assam'. A number of developmental projects will be implemented by the Centre under a Special Development Package, including the establishment of an IIM in Guwahati. The Assam government had sought the establishment of an IIM keeping in view the State's geographical location. 'Assam is one of the very few States with more than three crore population which does not have an IIM. As per latest published results of All-India Survey of Higher Education, more than five and half lakh students are enrolled in higher education institutions in Assam,' the Bill said. 'Establishing an IIM at Assam shall boost the overall education and development of the region and open up significant opportunities for the students of North Eastern region of India to develop managerial skills,' it added. IIM-Guwahati will get a corpus fund of ₹555 crore for five years (2025-26 to 2029-30). 'After five years, no additional support shall be extended to the Institute since by end of such period, the IIM-Guwahati shall be generating enough revenue through own internal accruals,' the Bill said. The Bill stated that until the first board of IIM, Guwahati is constituted under the Act, all powers and functions 'shall be exercised and performed by such person or persons as the Central Government may direct in this behalf'. IIM-Guwahati will be the 22nd such institute.
