Toronto FC loses defenders Monlouis, Wingo and Gomis to season-ending injuries
TORONTO — Last-place Toronto FC will be without defenders Zane Monlouis, Henry Wingo and Nicksoen Gomis for the rest of the season.
Monlouis had surgery earlier this month to repair hip and thigh injuries suffered June 25 against the Red Bulls.
Wingo underwent surgery June 16 in Finland to repair a torn quadriceps. Gomis had his torn Achilles repaired May 6 in Toronto.
All three have been placed on the MLS Season‑Ending Injury List.
Toronto (5‑12‑6) visits Charlotte (11‑11‑2), which has won three straight and sits sixth in the Eastern Conference, on Saturday in North Carolina.
Charlotte won the first meeting 2‑0 on May 31 at BMO Field.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander hosts basketball-themed bingo, meets with families during special stop at SickKids
SickKids patients got a special visit from NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who made a stop at the Toronto hospital this week. The Hamilton native and basketball star visited the hospital on Wednesday, showing off the Larry O'Brien trophy to some of his youngest fans. In a news release, SickKids said Gilgeous-Alexander co-hosted a 'basketball-themed bingo session' on a show broadcast throughout the building in each patient room. 'At the end of the show, he generously spent time meeting the patient families who had joined him in the studio space, signing autographs and posing for photos with them and the championship trophy,' the release continued. 'Shai's visit left smiles on the faces of everyone who attended and tuned into the live show, from patient families to SickKids staff.' The visit came one day before 'Shai Rally Day' in Hamilton, which will celebrate the Oklahoma City Thunder star by giving him a key to the city on Thursday. The ceremony and rally are expected to take place at 3:30 p.m. at Hamilton Stadium.

U.S. women's national team knocked off top spot by Spain in FIFA's latest rankings

Spain regained the No. 1 position despite losing to England in the final of the European Championship last month. The U.S. held the top position since August last year after winning gold at the Paris Olympics. Spain was No. 1 from December 2023 to June last year after its World Cup triumph. The latest rankings were released by world governing body FIFA on Thursday. England, which has won back-to-back Euros and lost to Spain in the final at the 2023 World Cup, moved up one place to fourth. Brazil dropped three positions and is seventh despite successfully defending the Copa America to win its ninth continental title. Sweden and France were big movers after impressive showings at the Euros. Sweden rose three places and is third after being eliminated on penalties by England in the quarterfinals.
