Meta is bringing ads to WhatsApp. Privacy experts are sounding the alarm
Eleven years after purchasing WhatsApp, Meta is going full throttle with its plans to monetize the communication platform. And while officials at the social media giant say users' privacy will still be protected, some experts are urging caution.
The social media giant announced on Monday it will over the next few months bring advertisements to WhatsApp, a radical shift for an app whose founders deliberately chose not to include advertising (or games or anything else that was popular amongst app makers at the time). The ads will appear just in one segment of the app, called Updates. That's used by about 1.5 billion people per day, roughly half of the app's total monthly users. Ads will not be a part of WhatsApp's chat feature with friends.
Meta said it will collect some data from users to help with targeting the ads. This includes location and language. The company said it will not collect any information from messages or calls.
'Like everything else on WhatsApp, we've built these features in the most privacy-oriented way possible,' the company wrote in the Monday blog post. 'Your personal messages, calls and statuses remain end-to-end encrypted, meaning no one can see or hear them. That includes Meta.'
But the revamped ad policy raises some red flags, especially given Meta's spotty historical record when it comes to privacy.
'The fact that Meta has promised that it's adding ads to WhatsApp with privacy in mind does not make me trust this new feature,' says Lena Cohen, a staff technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). 'Ads that are targeted based on your personal data are a privacy nightmare, no matter what app they're on.'
Concerns about WhatsApp's privacy practices aren't new. Just over a year ago, Elon Musk criticized the platform, writing on X that it 'exports your user data every night.' (Meta's Will Cathcart, who runs WhatsApp, denied that in a reply, writing: 'Many have said this already, but worth repeating: this is not correct. We take security seriously and that's why we end-to-end encrypt your messages. They don't get sent to us every night or exported to us.') Meanwhile, Meta continues to face broader scrutiny over its handling of personal information, including a pending lawsuit stemming from the 2016 Cambridge Analytica scandal and a recent $1.4 billion settlement over its unauthorized collection of biometric information.
WhatsApp's co-founders Jan Koum and Brian Acton have never been shy to express their distaste for the advertising industry. That caused strife after WhatsApp was bought by Meta and in 2018, the two founders left the company, using an escape hatch in their contracts after a reported series of clashes with executives. (Doing so cost Acton $900 million and Koum $400 million, as they departed before they were eligible for stock rewards.)
Acton, at the time, expressed regrets for selling the app, saying 'At the end of the day, I sold my company. I sold my users' privacy to a larger benefit. I made a choice and a compromise. I live with that every day.'
Meta, though, has pledged not to put ads within WhatsApp chats. In November 2023, Cathcart said Meta ' won't put ads in your inbox,' a vow he has been able to keep, in large part because of the popularity of the Updates tab.
Perhaps anticipating the concerns Monday's announcement might stir up, Meta launched an ad campaign three weeks ago that reinforced the privacy of personal messages. While there are no estimates about how much Meta will be able to grow its ad revenue with WhatsApp advertisements, it's a number that's likely to increase in coming years. (In 2024, for perspective, Meta's ad revenue reached $162.4 billion company wide.)
Despite that, the EFF's Cohen says users who are concerned about the privacy implications of this move are right to be on their guard. While she said the promises the company made in announcing the addition of ads were encouraging, they weren't sufficient to completely ensure user data would remain confidential.
Cohen warns that even though Meta claims it won't use personally identifiable data, the information it does collect can still be used to re-identify users—especially when combined from other data combed from the web. 'I would definitely recommend that people do not add WhatsApp to their Meta account center,' she says. 'That will allow Meta to broadcast even more of your personal information to potential advertisers. And that data wouldn't just include info that meta gets from you on its own platforms; it would include information it gets from tracking you across the web.'

TikTok Launches New AI-Powered Ad Creation Tools, Integrations with Adobe and WPP
This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. TikTok's announced some new AI-powered elements for its TikTok Symphony brand creation platform, including updated text-to-video creation, image-to-video animation, and more. First off, TikTok's rolling out its own version of text-to-video, which will generate AI video using TikTok's own AI tools. As you can see in this example, now, TikTok can generate platform-specific styled video content based on text prompts, which could provide another option for your TikTok efforts. As explained by TikTok: 'Now, with just a short and simple text prompt, Symphony Text to Video makes it easy for marketers to instantly bring an idea to life without the need for visuals, enabling advertisers to rapidly generate, test, and iterate concepts before full production begins. Text to Video is also a quick and easy way for marketers to create multiple campaign concepts, test a range of creative executions or customize content at scale.' The fact that this content is more aligned to TikTok style could be a big bonus, providing more ways to create content specifically designed for the app, based on existing, trending content. TikTok's also adding a new image-to-video creation option, which will turn your still image assets into video updates. 'Adding an image and short text prompt creates five-second, TikTok-first clips that can be stitched together to produce engaging ads that connect brands with their TikTok community.' Both of these options are similar to Google's Veo tools, and Meta's in-development text-to-video option, providing more ways to build video assets. And over time, these generated video clips are also looking more and more realistic. So now, you have even fewer excuses for avoiding TikTok content, because you can create video from any still image asset that you have, which TikTok can then use in your ads and promotions. Finally, TikTok's also rolling out 'Symphony Showcase Products,' which will have TikTok's AI avatars present your products for you in generated video clips. I'm less convinced of this one, but TikTok has seen big success with virtual avatars in other markets, and it could be another consideration for your video clips. To create your own video avatar promotion, you'll upload an image, then select an avatar type (as you can see in the left of the above example). TikTok will then generate a five-second video clip of that character talking about your product. At launch, TikTok's offering three options for these clips: Holding products: Create videos with an avatar holding any product an advertiser wants to feature. Clothing: Create a video with an avatar trying on and modeling an item of clothing. App: Create videos with an avatar holding a phone showcasing the app of their choice. Yeah, I don't, most of the current avatar clips I see in the app look poorly lip syched, with stiff, robotic characters, but maybe, as the technology evolves, this will become a more viable option, and you may well find that these initial examples suit your needs within longer video clips. Some additional considerations either way, which may be worth experimenting with in your TikTok ads process. On another front, TikTok's also announced new integrations with Adobe Express and WPP Open, which will bring Symphony functions to users of these platforms. 'We're expanding our partnership with Adobe to bring access to Symphony Image to Video directly within Adobe Express, Adobe's go-to tool for social content creation and collaboration. With this update, Adobe is enabling brands, small business owners and creators alike to create TikTok-first content within the Adobe Express app on desktop, allowing their clients to breathe new life into existing brand content and embrace new creative formats.' WPP Open users will also gain access to TikTok Symphony elements, including Symphony AI Dubbing, Generate & Remix videos and Symphony Digital Avatars. Some significant updates, which will provide more considerations for your TikTok marketing approach. Recommended Reading TikTok Publishes 2023 Holiday Marketing Guide Sign in to access your portfolio

Galileo, the B2B financial services arm of SoFi Technologies, Inc. SOFI, is emerging as a key engine of growth in the rapidly expanding embedded finance market. By offering seamless payment and lending integrations, Galileo enables financial and non-financial firms to embed banking capabilities directly into their platforms. This strengthens SoFi's competitive edge and opens up new revenue streams. As embedded finance is expected to witness a CAGR of 16.8% through 2029, Galileo's ability to attract high-profile clients and scale its offerings positions SoFi as a serious contender for long-term leadership. SoFi is leveraging Galileo to diversify beyond its core consumer lending business, tapping into the broader digital banking ecosystem. The platform's adoption by other financial firms not only validates its technological edge but also enhances its network effects, improving monetization potential. Pinterest Partners with Instacart to Help Maximize Ad Targeting for Retailers
This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. Pinterest and grocery delivery platform Instacart have announced a new partnership that will enable Pinterest advertisers to target their ads based on Instacart engagement data, while also making Pinterest ads directly shoppable via the Instacart platform. Which could be of specific value for food and recipe-related brands, enabling them to tap into Instacart customer and engagement insights to better target their Pin promotions. Which is likely the main value here. As explained by Instacart: 'In the initial phase of the partnership, select brands advertising on Pinterest will be able to advertise their products to Instacart first-party audience segments - built from real-world retail purchase behavior - to reach high-intent consumers with more precision. A second phase is expected to introduce closed-loop measurement, which would tie Pinterest ads to actual product sales across the Instacart Marketplace of over 1,800 retailers, and help prove campaign impact with real purchase data.' So now, retail advertisers on Pinterest will be able to access Instacart audience info, so that they can focus their ads on high-intent shoppers in the app. Which will be valuable. Instacart says that it works with more than 1,800 national, regional, and local retailers to facilitate shopping, delivery and pickup services from nearly 100,000 stores across North America. The data that it has, then, relates to specific purchase trends, and product preferences, enabling higher value targeting for promotions. Maybe that enables you to advertise your restaurant, or food delivery service, or maybe it will predominantly be used by CPG brands to connect with users looking for specific items. Whatever the usage, the added insight from Instacart will definitely enhance Pinterest's targeting tools, providing more information for your outreach. And in addition, as noted, Pinterest ads will become directly shoppable via Instacart, enabling Pinterest users to complete a purchase in just a few clicks. 'Imagine pinning a cocktail recipe and being able to instantly order the ingredients, or discovering a new clean beauty brand and getting it delivered to your door in as fast as 30 minutes.' Pinterest continues to build out its shopping options, and expand its online marketplace, with a view to becoming the virtual shopping mall for more sectors. It may not be able to match Amazon on this front, but with its expanding range of products, and smarter search tools, it is becoming a more all-encompassing platform for various shopping needs.
