Cancer-stricken AFL WAG Kellie Finlayson speaks out after trolls made baseless comparisons to conwoman Belle Gibson

Sky News AU29-04-2025

Kellie Finlayson has opened up about the impact of vicious online trolls who have made baseless claims she is lying about her cancer diagnosis, including comparisons to notorious cancer conwoman Belle Gibson.
The AFL WAG, 29, who is married to Port Adelaide forward Jeremy Finlayson, is battling stage 4 bowel cancer after being diagnosed when she was just 25 years old.
Finlayson's shocking diagnosis came four years after she started experiencing stomach issues, including irregular bowel movements, and at times, blood in her stool.
On Tuesday morning, Finlayson appeared on Nine's Today show to promote her new book, There Must Be More, which documents her ongoing cancer battle.
At one point, co-host Sarah Abo brought up online trolls who have questioned the mother-of-one's cancer diagnosis, including hurtful comparisons to cancer conwoman Belle Gibson.
'What do you say, Kellie, I know you revealed earlier those ugly comparisons to conwoman Belle Gibson, and that's just disgusting and heartless,' Abo said.
'I don't know where this comes from, that people feel that they can say these things to you.'
'Don't get me wrong, 90 per cent of the people who reach out are very positive and tell me that I've inspired them or that they've gotten checked because of me,' Kellie said.
'But those 10 per cent that decide that it's their time to tell me that maybe I might have comparisons to someone that is lying about a diagnosis purely out of the way that I look and I guess the way that I've gone about it, rather than being inspired by that they've decided that it can't be real.'
The update comes months after Finlayson revealed the 'depth of hate' she felt towards Gibson after the release of the Netflix series Apple Cider Vinegar about the notorious case.
Gibson falsely claimed to have beaten brain cancer using alternative therapies and nutrition, which she schilled through her own app called The Whole Pantry.
In reality, Gibson never had cancer and was fined over $410,000 by a Victorian court for false claims and failing to donate proceeds from her app sales to charities as promised.
'I have this depth of hate towards her (Gibson) and I don't hate anyone,' Finlayson said in a video published on her Instagram account in February.
'But the way it irks me and I know she irks so many others... I've been referred to by this woman's name countless times, several times a week even.
'Which is just... it's just a big punch to the face. It's kicking me while I'm down.'

‘It's time for me to take a breath': The Project star Sarah Harris jokes about possible gig on OnlyFans after series axed

Sarah Harris has broken her silence for the first time since Channel 10 confirmed The Project has been axed. A Ten spokesperson confirmed to that The Project wound end its run after 'almost 16 years and more than 4,500 episodes'. "The Project will air for the last time on Friday, June 27, ending an incredible run of almost 16 years and more than 4,500 episodes,' the network said in a statement. "The impact that The Project has had on the media and entertainment industry, countless careers, as well as on Australian society and culture, cannot be overstated.' It is unclear whether the series' high profile hosts, including Waleed Aly and Sarah Harris, will be deployed to other projects at Ten or leave the network entirely. In a tongue-in-cheek statement, Harris teased that fans should 'keep an eye out' for when she starts a page on adult subscription content website OnlyFans. 'I've had a blast, but it's time for me to take a breath and spend some time with my boys… keep an eye out for my OnlyFans page,' she said in a statement shared via the program's official Instagram page. Harris, a Channel 10 veteran who previously co-anchored the canned daytime series Studio 10, joined The Project in 2022. 'Our supportive Queen, Sarah Harris, has spoken following the news that we are finishing up on June 27 and her boys are going to have the best time with their Mum over the next few months,' the channel said in a statement. The Melbourne-based program features a rotating line up of regular presenters including Waleed Aly, Sarah Harris, Sam Taunton, and Georgie Tunny from Sunday through Friday. The series' original panel consisted of Carrie Bickmore, Charlie Pickering and Dave Hughes, but its most well-known line up was arguably Bickmore, Peter Helliar, Waleed Aly, and Hamish McDonald. It was this era that saw The Project and its hosts pick up a trophy case of Logie wins, including Gold Logies for Bickmore in 2015 and Aly in 2016. Bickmore and Helliar left the Melbourne-based show in 2022 amid reported budget cuts and declining viewership at the free-to-air broadcaster. A new half hour news program called Behind the Lines, hosted by high-profile journalist Denholm Hitchcock, is set air in July or August. It is understood Ten will be broadcasting the new show from Sydney to save on costs and already broadcasts The Project from Sydney on Sundays.

Meghan's ‘hotel and restaurant' plan revealed as she looks to expand empire

Don't miss out on the headlines from Royals. Followed categories will be added to My News. The Duchess of Sussex is adding hotels and restaurants to her brand wish list as she goes on a social media charm offensive to win new fans. Ex-actress Meghan is trademarking her lifestyle firm As Ever for 'hospitality services'. It will include places to stay, 'provision of food and drink' and temporary lodgings, reports The Sun. The 43-year-old could serve some of her own food creations — including recipes flaunted on her Netflix series With Love, Meghan. Experts say it shows her ambition to move forward and focus on the future, while husband Prince Harry, 40, seems stuck reflecting on the past. She has spent the year rebranding herself away from runaway royal to a lifestyle, entertaining and star hostess. Meghan Markle sold out of her As Ever product range in less than an hour. Picture: Instagram She has been focused on her rebrand in recent months. Picture: Instagram Brand experts said hotels and restaurants fit in with her lifestyle business image. In the first episode of her eight-part TV series in March, Meghan said: 'When I have someone stay, one of my favourite things to do is prep the guest room.' A second series has already been filmed and will be released in the autumn. Her lifestyle brand's website says: 'As Ever is more than a brand — it's a love language. 'Created by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, As Ever welcomes you to a collection of products, each inspired by her long-lasting love of cooking, entertaining and hostessing.' On Saturday, her As Ever page posted a new picture of her running through the sea in a white dress. It was captioned: 'So excited for all the good to come! 'Running into the weekend like', with an ocean wave emoji added. She has also been increasingly active on Instagram after relaunching her personal account on New Year's Day. Last week, she shared an 80-second video of her twerking in hospital in a bid to induce labour when she was pregnant and overdue with Lilibet. It attracted criticism in Britain for being vulgar. But a source said: 'Meghan is very pleased with the video. 'In the UK everyone's reaction has been a bit prudish but everywhere else, particularly in America and especially with young people, it's been a huge hit. At the Time100 summit in April. Picture:for TIME 'Californian royalty' 'Her new products are marketed at Americans and not the UK.' Meghan has also posted videos of her family at Disneyland, beekeeping with daughter Lilibet, and going to a Beyonce concert with Harry. Her As Ever Instagram page launched in February. Posts include pictures of her gardening, preparing fresh fruit and baking. PR and branding expert Jack Izzard, of Gallia Communications, said of her trademark application: 'In terms of positioning, it's not a million miles from where As Ever is. 'She is very much positioning herself as a star hostess, Californian royalty who makes her guests feel welcome. 'The issue she's potentially going to have is that's a completely different skill set, running a hospitality business. 'A night in an As Ever B&B will be several hundred pounds. 'That's really going to blow up if it's bad.' Mr Izzard said her recent activities are 'all about her reclaiming her voice' and building her brand. He added: 'She always intimated she was stifled by life in the Royal Family. 'She's got to earn a living. It's very much 'I'm this Californian hostess now'. 'Harry's still stuck in the past and trying to settle scores. 'She is looking ahead, forging this brand.' Representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were approached for comment.
