Cancer-stricken AFL WAG Kellie Finlayson speaks out after trolls made baseless comparisons to conwoman Belle Gibson

Sky News AU29-04-2025
Kellie Finlayson has opened up about the impact of vicious online trolls who have made baseless claims she is lying about her cancer diagnosis, including comparisons to notorious cancer conwoman Belle Gibson.
The AFL WAG, 29, who is married to Port Adelaide forward Jeremy Finlayson, is battling stage 4 bowel cancer after being diagnosed when she was just 25 years old.
Finlayson's shocking diagnosis came four years after she started experiencing stomach issues, including irregular bowel movements, and at times, blood in her stool.
On Tuesday morning, Finlayson appeared on Nine's Today show to promote her new book, There Must Be More, which documents her ongoing cancer battle.
At one point, co-host Sarah Abo brought up online trolls who have questioned the mother-of-one's cancer diagnosis, including hurtful comparisons to cancer conwoman Belle Gibson.
'What do you say, Kellie, I know you revealed earlier those ugly comparisons to conwoman Belle Gibson, and that's just disgusting and heartless,' Abo said.
'I don't know where this comes from, that people feel that they can say these things to you.'
'Don't get me wrong, 90 per cent of the people who reach out are very positive and tell me that I've inspired them or that they've gotten checked because of me,' Kellie said.
'But those 10 per cent that decide that it's their time to tell me that maybe I might have comparisons to someone that is lying about a diagnosis purely out of the way that I look and I guess the way that I've gone about it, rather than being inspired by that they've decided that it can't be real.'
The update comes months after Finlayson revealed the 'depth of hate' she felt towards Gibson after the release of the Netflix series Apple Cider Vinegar about the notorious case.
Gibson falsely claimed to have beaten brain cancer using alternative therapies and nutrition, which she schilled through her own app called The Whole Pantry.
In reality, Gibson never had cancer and was fined over $410,000 by a Victorian court for false claims and failing to donate proceeds from her app sales to charities as promised.
'I have this depth of hate towards her (Gibson) and I don't hate anyone,' Finlayson said in a video published on her Instagram account in February.
'But the way it irks me and I know she irks so many others... I've been referred to by this woman's name countless times, several times a week even.
'Which is just... it's just a big punch to the face. It's kicking me while I'm down.'

Its classic - a grilled cheddar cheese for an extremely reasonable $6 - is a prime example of why sometimes basic is best. Fremantle Little Sister Cheese Toastie. Anthony Mackie was 'proud' to call Malcolm-Jamal Warner a friend

Anthony Mackie felt "proud" to call Malcolm-Jamal Warner a friend. The 46-year-old actor hailed the late Cosby Show star - who drowned while on a family vacation in Costa Rica last month - a "beautiful human being" who he always treasured spending time with. He told People magazine: 'I'm proud to say Malcom-Jamal Warner was a friend of mine. He's somebody that I knew and spent time with, and just was such a beautiful human being. 'And every time I was around him, I was able to take full advantage of those conversations and that time. That, for me, is the most important thing." The Captain America: The Winter Soldier actor also spoke of how much he valued having late actor and "icon" Andre Braugher as a mentor before he died of lung cancer aged 61 in December 2023. She said: 'Being in New York and that new kid on the theater scene. To have those lessons and those moments and have that communicated [by] such — at that time for me — such an icon in the business. 'I always tell people just take full advantage of those moments [with mentors] and truly be yourself so that that person can see, react and engage with who you are and not some fictitious idea of who you think they want you to be." Anthony's Twisted Metal co-star Stephanie Beatriz, 44, also worked closely with Andre on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and she agreed how important interactions with other people are. She said: 'Unfortunately, we all go through grief in our lives. And all you really have are those memories. 'So Anthony's absolutely right. Coming to people in your life with the truest, most honest self as much as you can at all times is gonna feed the memories when you lose them. And hopefully feed their memories when someday they might lose you.' Malcolm's mom spoke out about her son's death earlier this week, and reassured fans the actor "did not suffer" and was "at peace" when he died. In a lengthy tribute shared on the new Malcolm-Jamal Warner Living Legacy Instagram page, she wrote in part: "For those of you who are at a loss, pained by the suddenness of his departure, ache for his presence or just to hear his voice one more time, to see his beatific smile one more time, be comforted that he was at peace and more importantly, he did not suffer. "Malcolm was birthed through water and transitioned through water. 'This was his time. His mission on earth had been completed. "Hold close to whatever part of Malcolm's life that touched yours. In keeping it near, you keep his spirit alive — nourishing you with the peace, love, joy and light that embodied Malcolm-Jamal Warner."

The fake heiress, the Instagram shoot and the abandoned bunnies

New York: It was a scene befitting of a millennial influencer: the fake heiress known as Anna Delvey posing outside a Tribeca subway station with two bunnies on leashes — and an ankle monitor on her tanned leg. But not long after, some bunnies that had been procured for the photo shoot with the would-be socialite were abandoned in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, unleashing a torrent of backlash towards the real Anna Sorokin, who in an interview with The New York Times on Monday said she was not responsible for procuring the rabbits and that she was 'horrified' when she learned that they had been ditched. 'I felt ashamed and embarrassed to be associated with it,' Sorokin, 34, said. Sorokin, who pretended to be a wealthy German heiress and landed in prison for nearly four years for swindling Manhattan's elite, spent 18 months behind bars in immigration detention for overstaying her visa. She has filled her time lately with photo shoots, publicity stunts and a stint on Dancing With the Stars. On August 3, Sorokin posted the photo shoot with the bunnies on a New York City footpath. The bunny cradled in Sorokin's arms was an 18-month-old Harlequin lop named Parker. But the next day, Terry Chao, a web specialist who blogs about vegan causes in her spare time, spotted Parker in Prospect Park, recognising the rabbit from a Facebook group where some bunnies had recently been listed as available for adoption. Parker had been hiding in bushes near the Endale Arch on August 4, not far from a cardboard box, said Chao, the online sleuth who helped rescue the rabbit and care for two others that had been part of the photo shoot. She and several other people used a pen with wire gates to help corral the bunnies. Chao said she had also recognised the cardboard box from Sorokin's Instagram feed and that it also had a Yonkers address on it, possibly connecting it to the family who put the bunnies up for adoption. The most obvious giveaway, Chao said, was that someone who had worked on the shoot had earlier reached out to her to scout out available bunnies.
