Former Arsenal kit man launches unfair dismissal claim following ‘anti-Semitic' comments

Yahoo16-05-2025

A former Arsenal academy kit man has launched a legal action against the club, claiming he was unfairly dismissed for expressing solidarity with Palestine.
Mark Bonnick, 61, was fired on Christmas Eve last year after Arsenal carried out an investigation into a series of messages posted on his social media pages.
Those messages included references to 'Jewish supremacy' and 'ethnic cleansing', while one of them read: 'Hamas offered to release all hostages in October. Zionist Israel refused. Persecution complex.'
Another post read: 'It is all about Jewish supremacy and not wanting to share the land. Ethnic cleansing.'
In his legal action, Bonnick has demanded that Arsenal reinstate him and issue an apology. In a statement, he has said: 'Israel is an apartheid state. I was sacked not for misconduct, but for expressing grief and outrage over genocide. Despite being this close to retirement, I have no regrets. Arsenal must apologise, reinstate me, and take a stand against anti-Palestinian racism.'
The legal team representing Bonnick, who worked for Arsenal for more than two decades and is a lifelong supporter of the club, is arguing that he was targeted by a 'coordinated online smear campaign by pro-Israel Twitter accounts'.
Bonnick's legal team has claimed that Arsenal's investigation did not find Bonnick's posts to be anti-Semitic, but that he was dismissed on the grounds that he brought the club into disrepute.
Franck Magennis, of Garden Court Chambers, representing Bonnick, said in a statement: 'It's an honour to represent Mark. His dismissal sends a chilling message to those who speak out against apartheid and genocide. Arsenal must be held accountable.'
It was reported in December that Arsenal had received complaints about Bonnick's posts from one of their supporter groups, with the club saying in a statement at the time: 'We are investigating this matter in line with our internal policies and procedures. Arsenal stands against all forms of abuse and discrimination.'
Arsenal have been approached for comment.

Israel is poised to launch operation on Iran, multiple sources tell CBS News

U.S. officials have been told Israel is fully ready to launch an operation into Iran, multiple sources told CBS News. The U.S. anticipates Iran could retaliate on certain American sites in neighboring Iraq. This is part of the reason the U.S. advised some Americans to leave the region earlier Wednesday, with the State Department ordering non-emergency government officials to exit Iraq due to "heightened regional tensions." President Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff is still planning to meet with Iran for a sixth round of talks on the country's nuclear program in the coming days, two U.S. officials said. Mr. Trump spoke about Iran at an appearance at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday, telling reporters Americans were advised to leave the region "because it could be a dangerous place, and we'll see what happens." Mr. Trump also reiterated the U.S. did not want Iran to develop a nuclear weapon, saying: "We're not going to allow that." Israeli officials and White House spokespeople declined to comment. The Trump administration has sought a deal with Iran to limit the country's nuclear program, as international watchdogs say the country has continued to enrich uranium to near-weapons level. The talks are delicate, and it's unclear how close the two sides are to a deal: Mr. Trump has said he will not accept any uranium enrichment by Iran, but Iranian leaders have indicated they won't accept those terms, the president said earlier this week. For years, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been deeply skeptical of any deal with Iran. The two countries have been nemeses since Iran's 1979 revolution. Netanyahu's office says Israel has conducted "countless overt and covert operations" to stunt the growth of Iran's nuclear program. Last month, Mr. Trump said publicly he had urged Netanyahu not to strike Iran while his administration pursues negotiations with the regime. "I told him this would be inappropriate to do right now because we're very close to a solution," Mr. Trump said.

Democrat accuses Trump of unleashing ‘campaign of terror' on illegals as LA riots rage

As anti-ICE riots rage across Los Angeles, congressional Democrats marked the 13th anniversary of DACA with a press conference during which Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., accused President Donald Trump of unleashing a "campaign of terror" on illegal immigrants. DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is a U.S. immigration policy that defers deportation for eligible immigrants who arrived in the country as children. Speaking just outside the Capitol building Wednesday, Ramirez accused Trump, border czar Tom Homan, Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller and the entire administration of targeting anyone they consider "undesirable." She also pushed a conspiracy theory that the president will target U.S. citizens the same way he has deported criminal migrants. "Trump, Homan, Miller and this whole regime has waged a campaign of terror against our neighbors, against our families, our loved ones, as they advance their fascist agenda and try to cast immigrants as a public enemy," Ramirez said. Senator Launches Investigation Into Democratic Org Over Potential Support For La Rioters "Let us say it, and I'm going to say it unapologetically," she added. "We don't need bans, We don't need walls. We don't need raids. We don't need kidnappings. We don't need masked agents terrorizing our communities. We don't need military attacking our neighbors. We have to demand an end to the terror tactics." Read On The Fox News App Newsom Says Los Angeles Rioters Will Be Prosecuted, Slams Trump For 'Traumatizing Our Communities' Los Angeles has been rocked by fiery riots and clashes with police and federal authorities since Friday. The rioting began Friday in response to immigration enforcement operations by ICE throughout the city. In response, Trump deployed federalized National Guard troops and several hundred Marines to assist in restoring order. This move has been heavily criticized by Democrats, who have accused Trump of intentionally provoking rioters. "The unlawful actions used against immigrants today will be used tomorrow on anyone who this regime deems undesirable because fascism always demands a public enemy," Ramirez claimed. "It is why we must stand with DACA recipients, and we must also stand with their parents. "We must also stand with their uncles and their sisters and their tias and our small businesses and our teachers and our LGBTQ and every single person this regime is attacking." Despite Ramirez's characterization of the Trump administration targeting innocent "tias," federal immigration authorities have detailed criminal charges against the illegals arrested by ICE. Sarah Huckabee Sanders Calls Gavin Newsom 'Insane' For Rejecting Federal Assistance During Los Angeles Unrest This week, ICE published information on charges against illegals arrested in Los Angeles during the ongoing riots. On Wednesday, ICE said it had arrested Jesus Romero-Retana, a Mexican national who the agency said had been convicted of battery and threatening with intent to terrorize. ICE also said it arrested a Cambodian illegal named Mab Khleb in Los Angeles Tuesday. The agency said he had been sentenced for lewd acts with a child, battery and multiple drug offenses. ICE said it arrested the criminal illegal "despite the best efforts of anti-ICE protestors in the city." A source familiar with the operations shared with Fox News Digital a listing of some of the arrests made by ICE in the last week. These arrests included a Salvadoran national arrested in Los Angeles for sodomy of a child, a Mexican national arrested in Chicago for criminal sexual assault of a child, a Mexican national arrested in Houston for indecent sexual contact with a child, a Honduran national arrested in El Paso for possession of child pornography and a Laotian national arrested for murder and attempted article source: Democrat accuses Trump of unleashing 'campaign of terror' on illegals as LA riots rage

Texas National Guard on standby for ‘Day of Defiance' protests in Austin, San Antonio

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Following heated protests against immigration enforcement actions in Austin and Dallas, and with more protests planned this weekend, Gov. Abbott is calling on the Texas Army National Guard 'to help law enforcement maintain order' and 'ensure peace.' 'We want to make sure that what has happened in California does not happen in Texas,' Abbott said Wednesday. 'Texas is a law and order state and we will use every tool that we can to ensure order.' The Texas Army National Guard will be used in Austin and San Antonio, at least, both cities confirmed. This comes as hundreds of protests — dubbed the 'No Kings' Nationwide Day of Defiance by Indivisible, a progressive activist organization — are expected to take place across the country on Saturday. KXAN found at least 63 Texas locations listed online where anti-Trump demonstrations are advertised to take place this weekend, fueled by recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids targeting undocumented immigrants. In central Texas, that includes Austin, Dripping Springs, Fredericksburg, Lockhart, Pflugerville and Taylor. Austin's protest is listed as taking place on the Capitol grounds. KXAN confirmed the organizers of the 'No Kings' event obtained proper authorization to do so by the Texas State Preservation Board. 'A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action,' according to the organization's website. 'We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.' KXAN called at least 15 Texas cities from the group's online list. At least eight — Arlington, Corpus Christi, Dallas, El Paso, Fredericksburg, Houston, Pflugerville and Seguin — said they were aware of and prepared for protests. None that responded knew if the Guard would be used. Austin Mayor: Texas National Guard on standby to assist DPS during protests 'For safety and tactical purposes, we're not going to get into specifics about any security plans,' said Tim Ciesco with the Arlington Police Department. 'But we are aware of the demonstration that is planned for Saturday and we will be monitoring.' A spokesperson for the city of Dallas, which experienced tense protests on Monday, said it is 'aware a group is planning a protest.' El Paso said it has not requested the Texas Army National Guard but is 'monitoring planned local demonstrations in coordination with local law enforcement and other public safety partners to support peaceful expression and maintain public order,' according to a spokesperson. At a news conference Wednesday, officials from San Antonio said the governor's announcement caught them by surprise, saying Alamo City didn't 'get any advance warning.' 'Do I wish they would? Sure,' said San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, who added his city will 'plan for the worst and we hope, of course, for the best.' 'Exercise your right to free speech but I urge you to keep it lawful and peaceful,' said San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg. 'Disruption, destruction, is never appropriate, nor will it be tolerated.' Similarly, Austin City Mayor Kirk Watson confirmed the city was told the Texas National Guard will be 'prepared to assist the Texas Department of Public Safety on Saturday, if deemed necessary.' KXAN asked the governor's office about that but didn't get an answer as of this report. Abbott's announcement comes a day after he sent a warning on social media to protesters who 'cross the line' writing 'FAFO' — an acronym for 'f— around and find out.' The governor repeated that on Wednesday at a bill signing when asked what he meant by protesters who 'cross the line.' 'That leads to F-A-F-O?,' he said laughing. 'Violating the law. You break the law, you've crossed the line, you will be arrested.' 'We want to make sure that what has happened in California, does not happen in Texas,' he added. 'Texas is a law and order state and we will use every tool that we can to ensure order.' The governor would only say the Texas National Guard is ready in 'strategic locations' but would not say how many or where. 'The State of Texas stands ready to deploy all necessary personnel and resources to uphold law and order across our state,' said the governor's press secretary Andrew Mahaleris. 'Texas National Guard soldiers are on standby in areas where mass demonstrations are planned in case they are needed.' 'Peaceful protests are part of the fabric of our nation, but Texas will not tolerate the lawlessness we have seen in Los Angeles,' Mahaleris added. 'Anyone engaging in acts of violence or damaging property will be swiftly held accountable to the full extend of the law.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
