Aussie mum reveals how biting her nails after visiting a petting zoo saw her rushed to hospital with Q fever

An Aussie mum has shared how she had to be rushed to hospital for a rare, deadly infection - all stemming from a simple visit to a petting zoo. Jade Strang, from the Gold Coast, Queensland town of Ormeau had visited a petting zoo in July with her two young children, Lacy and Nixon. After Jade patted the goats and calves and her ten and six-year-old children cuddled the pigs and fed the ducks, the family left the zoo for the day. Jade made sure all three used the hand sanitiser provided on the way out. It wasn't until a few weeks later, when Jade was working at her craft supplies store, Imagine Vinyl, that she suspected she was ill. Speaking to Take 5 on Monday, she recalled beginning to feel strangely fatigued and told her fiancé Joel she was "so tired at the moment." He suggested Jade may have the flu - however, it was something much more sinister. (L-R) Jade, Lacey, Nixon and Joel. Picture: Supplied The mum-of-two feared her symptoms were worsening when two days later she became hot and sweaty all over, followed by "intense nausea". The next day, Jade's pupils dilated to different sizes, and she could smell gas even though there was none, with bruises over her leg and back. 'It looks like your veins have come to the surface,' Joel said. Initially fearing she might have cancer, Jade went to the doctor and underwent blood tests. A week later, Jade's doctor informed her: 'You have Q fever." 'It's so rare I had to look it up," the doctor said. Jade said they explained Q fever is caused by bacteria which spreads between animals and can infect humans who handle them. "That's weird, I wonder how I got it?" Jade said. The doctor said the infection can be contracted easily through nail biting after touching an animal. Jade's husband later said she must have contracted Q fever from the day at the zoo. She was rushed to the hospital, where none of the nurses and doctors had heard of Q fever or could assure the young mum she would be ok. By this time, Jade's lethargy had caused her to become unfunctional, and she left the hospital to go straight to bed to sleep the infection off. After two weeks spent in bed, Jade began to feel better and is now almost back to full health, apart from occasional bruising and lethargy. She has learned her lesson and quit her nail-biting habit, urging others to do the same before the unexpected and frightening happens.
