January 29 - Asa Newell collected 17 points and 10 rebounds, helping Georgia post a wire-to-wire 71-60 victory over South Carolina on Tuesday night in Southeastern Conference play in Athens, Ga.
Dakota Leffew added 14 points and Silas Demary Jr. chipped in 12 as Georgia (15-6, 3-5 SEC) snapped a four-game losing streak. Dylan James scored 10 points off the bench for the Bulldogs, who shot 51 percent from the field while holding South Carolina to a 41.2 percent clip.
South Carolina (10-11, 0-8) was led by Jamarii Thomas' 19 points and Collin Murray-Boyles' 18. The Gamecocks dropped their eighth straight game.
After leading by 14 at halftime, Georgia pushed its advantage to 37-21 on Leffew's layup to begin the second half. A 10-4 run by South Carolina trimmed the visitors' deficit to 41-31, with Thomas capping the burst with a 3-pointer at the 16:14 mark.
With 8:28 left, Newell's hook shot put Georgia ahead 55-42, but a triple from Thomas again cut the Gamecocks' deficit to 10 shortly after. From there, the Bulldogs pulled away with an 8-2 run -- stamped by Blue Cain's trey that gave Georgia a 63-47 lead at the 4:44 mark.
South Carolina cut Georgia's lead to nine, 69-60, on Murray-Boyles' hook shot with 31 seconds left before Leffew's two free throws capped the game's scoring.
Georgia jumped out to an 8-1 lead following consecutive 3-pointers from Demary and Leffew. After the Gamecocks answered with Morris Ugusuk's midrange jumper, RJ Godfrey's two free throws and back-to-back baskets by Newell extended the Bulldogs' lead to 14-3 with 14:25 to go in the first half.
A 13-4 run pulled the Gamecocks within two, but Demary's triple and six straight points from James pushed the Bulldogs' advantage to 27-16.
Georgia led 35-21 at halftime after holding South Carolina to just two field goals in the final 10:52 of the first half.

Ilia Topuria shows off insane body transformation after making shock career decision ahead of UFC 317 fight vs Oliveira

ILIA TOPURIA has undergone a dramatic body transformation ahead of his octagon return. The Georgian-born Spaniard is just over two weeks away from challenging for the lightweight title in the main event of UFC 317 in Las Vegas. 6 6 6 6 Topuria, 28, will challenge former titleholder Charles Oliveira for the belt recently vacated by pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev. The fight will be Topuria's first since he announced his own vacation of the featherweight strap and a move up to 155lbs in February. The slick striker has used the last few months to put on some considerable size and is now sporting a significantly more muscular frame. Snaps of Topuria's bulkier physique sent MMA fans into meltdown, with one saying: "That smirk when you know you're about to go 17-0 and add another belt to the collection." Another said: "He will be a menace at 155." And another said: "Ilia Topuria is looking jacked." One remarked: "My boy looking thicc as f**k." Another chimed in: "He's a real problem at 155. No one else has that KO power in that division except for Charles but it's not the same as Topuria's." JOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUS 6 Topuria's move up to lightweight came on the back of a devastating first and final defence of the 145lbs title against Max Holloway last October. He moved up so he'd no longer have to lose over a STONE to make the featherweight limit. UFC champ gifted £200k Aston Martin with top speed of 200mph... and F1 legend may be involved Topuria's clash with Oliveira will not only be his first at lightweight, it will also be his maiden fight since leaving his long-time trainers, the Climent Brothers. 'El Matador' recently left the Alicante-based Climent Club, which is run by brothers Jorge and Augustin, as he made Madrid his training base. The split was an amicable one, with Jorge telling Submission Radio: "You feel, always, this is not good for the sentimental feeling, but this [is] life. 'We go with him on the journey and now he grow, and he wants to fly away, you know? "We are very proud to [go as far as we did] with him. 'We are very proud for everything he [has done]. 6 "Of course, we are a little sad, but I want everything in his life [to] continue going well. "I want all good for him and his brother, and I think that they do the same for us. 'I don't know what can be in the future. "We have our own [direction right now] We love him. We love his brother. "We know he's going to [beat] everybody that [he fights] because he's the best. 'Always, he's going to be like our son."

Shane Lowry interview: Going from Oakmont to Portrush is taking the p---

The muddling buffoonery of the US Golf Association certainly did not assist in this mood of weirdness. In fact, the hapless organisers of America's national championship actually managed to make the scenario yet more surreal. On the 12th, Lowry was informed by referees they were unsure if Johnson had sustained a penalty shot for inadvertently making his ball move as he addressed it on the fifth green. Initially, he was absolved of blame but now they were having a rethink and would reach the decision at the end. So Lowry did not know at that stage if he was one behind Johnson or level with the burly South Carolinian. 'Yeah people have said that was a distraction, but I've never used that as an excuse. It would have definitely been more distracting for Dustin but he coped with the situation and ensured it didn't matter [a shot was eventually added to his scorecard, but he still prevailed by three]. 'He handled his emotions and I didn't, especially down those last few holes [he dropped three shots in the last five holes to post a 76]. And that's what I took away from that. I go back a much different golfer and person.' 'I wound myself up after third round at Augusta' That is undoubtedly the case, but with a character who wears his green heart on his sleeve there remain flashpoints. He has played admirably this season and achieved a long-time aim by cracking the world top 10 – albeit briefly – last month. But at the Masters he hit the headlines for berating the press for asking him about Rory McIlroy when he himself, was in contention for the Green Jacket and then at the next major, the US PGA, for shouting 'f--- this place' – though in mitigation, he has never been a fan of Quail Hollow. In between, he refused to talk to the media after finishing runner-up in Philadelphia, a $20 million event he really should have won. 'I don't know, I wound myself up after the third round there at Augusta,' he says. 'I was right in the hunt but bogeyed the last two. And when I was walking to the clubhouse I could see the guys waiting to speak to me and I thought 'ah s---, they just want to quiz me about Rory'. It's difficult. 'I chatted to one of the media people on Tour who has worked at the tennis and they said, 'win or lose, they have to do media duties, but get time to cool down'. I think that should be the case with us, but I don't want to make a big thing of it as that type of thing only happens once or twice a year. 'Look, after the Masters and that final round [in which he fired an 82] it was a strange feeling. I was so happy for my mate in completing the career grand slam, but I felt terrible about my game. I went to Hilton Head to play the next week, yet just didn't want to be there. But I've bounced back and am determined not to let that define my season. There's too much to play for.' Naturally, the return to Portrush has long been circled on the calendar and the recollections will flood back, especially of his grandmother, Emily, who revealed on the Irish news that she got stuck into the brandy to calm her nerves. 'She was 88 the other week, still going strong and I hope she has cause to crack open the brandy again,' Lowry says. 'It's funny, because there is some apprehension as I know I'll go there with the spotlight on me, although as Rory has the Green Jacket maybe he'll lift some of the pressure off me. 'I'm often asked how I can top 2019 and I have no idea. I won by six, so maybe win by seven? But that can wait. I have Oakmont before that.'
