Shubhangi Atre Reveals How Her Ex-Husband's Drinking Took A Toll On Their Family
She decided to part ways with him in 2020 after Piyush's alcohol addiction began to take a toll on her mental health and their daughter's well-being.
Shubhangi Atre, known for her performance in the comedy show Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain, has carved a niche for herself in the entertainment industry. Recently, the actress talked about her separation from her ex-husband Piyush Poorey and how his struggle with alcohol addiction affected her family's well-being. FYI: Piyush passed away this year in April due to multiple organ failure.
During a conversation with Siddharth Kanan, the actress shared that Piyush's addiction began in college and gradually increased during their 17-year marriage. However, she decided to part ways with him in 2020, after his addiction began to take a toll on her mental health and their daughter's well-being.
Shubhangi, who had known Piyush since school, said she had no idea how serious his alcoholism was until after they married.
Furthermore, the actress recalled her Piyush took steroids for a hair transplant while also drinking alcohol regularly. She said, 'I warned him, this is deadly. You are not supposed to do this. And then he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit."
Shubhangi revealed that doctors told her that if Piyush did not change his lifestyle, he would face problems. She said she tried every method, including rehabilitation and family meetings, to persuade him to quit drinking but nothing changed.
After looking at the situation, Shubhangi decided to part ways with Piyush back in 2020 and their divorce was finalised in February.
Talking about her married life, the actress added, 'I don't have any complaints from anyone. Piyush se zaroor ek sawal mai upar jaake puchungi ki 'Why you chose alcohol over me and Ashi?' (I will ask one question to Piyush after I die "Why you chose alcohol over me and Ashi?)."
In addition to this, Shubhangi claimed that she continued to support her husband financially even after their separation. She remembers advising Piyush to change his lifestyle even on the day they signed their divorce papers. 'I was crying. Mai usse yahi keh rahi thi ki jaldi thik ho jao (I was telling him to get well)," she said.
Speaking about the reason behind her husband's death, Shubhangi added, 'Alcohol was the culprit and there were multiple organ failure."
Shubhangi got married in 2003 at the age of 20 and welcomed her daughter, Ashi when she was 21.

Materialists OTT Release: Where To Watch Pedro Pascal, Dakota Johnson And Chris Evans' Rom-Com
Starring Pedro Pascal, Dakota Johnson, and Chris Evans, the film explores modern love, the illusion of choice, and the price tag often attached to relationships. After creating a massive buzz with Past Lives, Oscar-nominated director Celine Song is back with her second feature film, Materialists — a romantic drama wrapped in wit, longing, and a tangled love triangle. Starring Pedro Pascal, Dakota Johnson, and Chris Evans, the film explores modern love, the illusion of choice, and the price tag often attached to relationships. Originally released in theatres on June 13, Materialists is now available to stream — but there's a twist. The film has dropped on Amazon Prime Video India for rent only, not free with subscription. The official handle confirmed the update, writing, 'Everything comes with a price, including love. #MaterialistsOnPrime, Rent Now." What's Materialists About? In this New York-set romantic comedy, Dakota Johnson plays Lucy, a sharp, stylish, and successful matchmaker who knows how to pair people perfectly — except when it comes to herself. Things get complicated when she attends a wedding of a couple she matched. There, she meets Harry (Pedro Pascal), the groom's wealthy brother who instantly falls for her. But fate has more in store — Lucy also unexpectedly runs into her ex-boyfriend John (Chris Evans), a struggling actor now working as a wedding waiter. Caught between two very different men — one with emotional history, the other with financial security — Lucy is forced to confront what she really wants from love. The film's tagline might as well be: Would you choose love… or money? Song based the screenplay on her own experience working as a real-life matchmaker in NYC during the 2010s. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, she said: 'I learned more about people and what's in their hearts than I have in any other period of my life." 'When asked about their ideal partner, clients often listed height, weight, net worth — all numbers." Box Office & Streaming Made on a $20 million budget, Materialists has grossed over $62 million globally. With strong performances, real-world commentary, and Celine Song's signature emotional depth, it's a modern love story with high stakes both romantic and existential. Isha Talwar Calls Out YRF's Shanoo Sharma Over ‘Weird Audition': ‘It Shattered My Confidence'
Last Updated: In a detailed comment, Isha recounted an audition scenario that left her shaken. She was asked to perform a crying scene in the middle of a crowded restaurant. Actress Isha Talwar, known for her acclaimed roles in Mirzapur, Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo, and Article 15, has spoken out against a bizarre and uncomfortable audition experience she had with YRF casting director Shanoo Sharma. Isha took to social media to share her story and offer advice to newcomers in the industry. In a detailed comment under a publication's post, Isha recounted an audition scenario that left her shaken. She was asked to perform a crying scene in the middle of a crowded restaurant, Mia Cucina in Versova, Mumbai, surrounded by real diners and waitstaff. 'I was told I should have no inhibitions as an actor and hence should be able to cry at a table with Shanoo and her assistants watching me," Isha wrote. Calling the experience 'confusing and weird," she added that it 'shattered [her] confidence as a young girl in films." Isha questioned the logic behind such an unprofessional setting, saying a casting director should either provide a proper space for auditions or pay for a controlled location. Ultimately, she refused to perform under those circumstances and, as she noted, did not get the role. But she has no regrets. 'At least I didn't give in to the weird ask and surely didn't cry at a restaurant for a role!" she wrote, ending her post with the hashtag #DignityFirstAlways. This revelation has sparked discussions about professionalism and boundaries within casting processes in Bollywood, especially for newcomers trying to find their footing. Meanwhile, Shanoo Sharma has been in the spotlight for launching Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda in YRF's upcoming film Saiyaara. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Shanoo shared how she discovered Ahaan at the age of 19, calling him 'intriguing" and saying she knew right away they'd work together. 'He was 19 when we met, but he looked 15! I spotted a post of him online and reached out," she revealed. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
