Treasury and dollar slides reignite 'Sell America' fears. But there's still a buying opportunity in one corner of US debt.
Treasurys have been under scrutiny amid President Donald Trump's trade policies, with long-dated debt facing pressure. But analysts say there is still opportunity in the bond market.
Short-dated Treasurys are still seen as safe amid the dollar's dominance and likely Federal Reserve interest rate cuts should the economy enter a downturn.
"We have seen a bit more outflow from US dollar bonds, but I don't see anything that will be replacing the US dollar in the future," Warut Promboon, the managing partner at Hong Kong-based research firm Bondcritic, told Business Insider.
His comments come as 30-year yields recently climbed above 5% — a sign of weaker demand as investors grow wary of locking in lending to the US government for decades.
Warut, who has over 20 years of experience in the bond market, is advising clients to lean into gold and shorter-dated dollar bonds, such as five-year Treasurys.
While Warut isn't bearish on 10-year Treasurys, he prefers the five-year term debt due to its shorter maturity and lower exposure to long-term volatility.
His comments come amid an unusual divergence in Treasury yields, which have risen, and the dollar, which has declined — a trend that some have termed the "Sell America trade."
His take echoes a recent call from Goldman Sachs, which last week recommended adding gold and short-term Treasurys to portfolios.
Gold prices reached a record high of over $3,500 per ounce in April as investors fled to the time-tested store of value due to unprecedented uncertainty.
Caution over longer-dated Treasurys
Due to Trump's import tariffs and policy uncertainty, analysts are uncertain about the longer-term outlook for growth and bond yields.
"The broader structural story is that US economic exceptionalism is fading as the burden of twin deficits grows heavier," wrote analysts at Deutsche Bank on Monday, referring to the US's fiscal and current account deficit.
The analysts said they are bearish on the dollar and see upward pressure on bond yields.
"The dollar's dominance is waning; valuation and capital flow dynamics are taking over," the Deutsche Bank analysts added.
However, it may be premature to assume that the divergence in the dollar and Treasury yields is a permanent feature, wrote Vishnu Varathan, Mizuho's head of macro research for Asia, excluding Japan.
"The negative flip in USD-UST yield correlation arguably reflects a temporary recalibration process of risk re-pricing, even if it is abrupt and non-linear," he wrote.
"Specifically, to account for a conspiracy of fiscal, credit, trade, geo-economic risks in the wake of brutal Trump 2.0 tariff and wider geo-economic assault that has inflicted untold US self-harm," Varathan wrote.
The recent developments in the usually stable Treasury markets are raising fears of a US debt crisis.
On Sunday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent addressed the issue directly, saying categorically that the US is "never going to default" on its debt.
"That is never going to happen," Bessent told CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday. "We are on the warning track, and we will never hit the wall."

One in 10 cars sold in Britain are Chinese
Nearly one in 10 cars sold in Britain are now Chinese-made as drivers turn away from Tesla and embrace newer manufacturers such as BYD. Chinese-owned brands had a 9.4pc share of Britain's new car market last month, according to the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), up from 7.7pc in April. The surge saw BYD's sales alone quintuple to 3,025 cars – about 1,000 more than US rival Tesla sold. BYD recently launched its Dolphin Surf car in the UK with a starting price of £16,000, compared to an average of about £49,000 for new EVs. Some analysts have speculated that Chinese brands could still cut prices further, with the Dolphin Surf – known as the Seagull in Asia – selling for just 56,800 yuan (£5,800) in its home market. Other Chinese carmakers saw similarly strong growth. Geely-owned Polestar increased sales by more than 270pc to 1,174 vehicles, while Chery's Omoda and Jaecoo brands sold a combined 3,000 cars, having not been in the market a year ago. SAIC Motor-owned MG remained the biggest-selling Chinese brand, shifting 6,625 cars in May, but its sales were down 8.3pc compared to the same month in 2024. Chinese brands have made major inroads in recent years, particularly in the electric segment where they have launched some of the cheapest models available. Manufacturers have undercut Western rivals including Tesla, which has struggled to stem a steep sales decline in Europe partly driven by a political backlash linked to Elon Musk's support of Donald Trump. Tesla sales in the UK fell by 36pc in May compared to a year earlier. It came as the overall market returned to growth, with sales rising 1.6pc to 150,070 in May, SMMT said. Sales of EVs surged 25.8pc to 32,738 in May, with electric vehicles (EV) taking a 21.8pc market share overall. However, the SMMT warned that the EV market was gripped by 'unsustainable' discounting as manufacturers scramble to hit the Government's ZEV mandate sales targets. Under the mandate, 28pc of cars sold must be electric this year, a target that rises steadily to 80pc by 2030, although the real requirement is lower in reality because of 'flexibilities' afforded to companies under the scheme. Sales of petrol and diesel cars tumbled 12.5pc and 15.5pc respectively last month. Carmakers are calling on the Government to boost demand for EVs through tax breaks or grants for drivers. Mike Hawes, the chief executive of the SMMT, said: 'A return to growth for new car registrations in May is welcome but manufacturer discounting on new products continues to underpin the market, notably for electric vehicles. 'This cannot be sustained indefinitely as it undermines the ability of companies to invest in new product development – investments which are integral to the decarbonisation of all road transport. 'Next week's spending review is the opportunity for Government to double-down on its commitments to net zero by driving demand through fiscal measures that boost the market and shore up our competitiveness.' Lack of documentation can be fatal when claiming expenses on taxes
One of the practical pieces of tax advice that I continuously dole out to clients, friends and family members each year is the critical importance of keeping receipts for any deductions or credits you plan to claim on your tax return. While this goes without saying for obvious items such as charitable donations and eligible medical expenses, it's perhaps even more important to keep receipts of other expenses, such as employment or business expenses, that you plan to deduct on your return to lower your final tax bill. Depending on your tax bracket, those receipts can be worth more than 50 cents on the dollar. Consider the self-employed, high-income earning Vancouver-based IT consultant who spent $1,000 in airfare to visit a client in 2025. At her top marginal tax rate of 53.5 per cent, hanging on to that receipt could save her $535 in real hard cash taxes that she otherwise would have to remit to the Canada Revenue Agency by April 30, 2026. That's why I encourage anyone who claims employment or business expenses to carefully track them and keep those receipts. That can be done 'old school,' by physically hanging on to the relevant receipts and filing them in a paper folder for tax season. Alternatively, many of us are now in the habit of taking a picture of the receipt (or scanning it) and saving the receipts in an online 'tax folder', by year, stored virtually in the cloud, so that these receipts are all together in one place come tax time. If you incur substantial business or employment expenses each year, I would go so far as to recommend a separate credit card so that you can easily segregate your work expenses from your personal expenses, especially when it comes to some retail purchases that could be either. For example, was that recent Staples purchase tax-deductible office supplies or a large back-to-school stock-up for the kids? The importance of keeping receipts to justify your expenses came up yet again in a recent decision of the Federal Court of Appeal released late last month. The issue before the appellate court was whether the lower Tax Court erred in disallowing additional deductions for motor vehicle expenses incurred by the taxpayer in connection with his employment. While it was clear that the taxpayer travelled for work and qualified for various employment expense deductions permitted under the Income Tax Act, the Tax Court concluded that the deductions should not be allowed because the taxpayer did not provide sufficient evidence to demonstrate the amount that should be deductible. I first wrote about this case last year, so before reviewing the decision of the appellate court, here's a brief summary of the facts. The taxpayer was appealing reassessments of his 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 taxation years in which the CRA reduced or denied certain expenses claimed in each of those years. The taxpayer, a visiting registered nurse, was simultaneously employed by four separate employers in 2015 and three separate employers in 2016, 2017 and 2018. His job was to provide nursing services to individuals in their own homes or in a retirement or nursing home. During the tax years under review, he provided nursing services six days one week and four days the next week on a rotating basis. Each week included two or three seven-hour night shifts during which he was on standby for patients who required urgent care. The night before each workday, his employers would provide a schedule of the patients he was to visit the following day. The taxpayer estimated he visited between 10 and 30 patients during a day shift, and he worked an average of 40 to 45 hours per week, plus the two to three seven-hour night shifts. Each employer paid the taxpayer a fixed amount for each patient visit, regardless of the nursing services provided. He travelled daily from his south-central Ontario community to visit patients in the Greater Toronto Area. The taxpayer deducted various automobile expenses in each year, which were denied. Under the Income Tax Act, to be able to deduct vehicle expenses as an employee, you must normally be required to work away from your employer's place of business or in different places, and you must be required to pay your own automobile expenses, as certified on Form T2200, Declaration of Conditions of Employment. In addition, you must not be the recipient of a 'non-taxable' allowance for motor vehicle expenses. An allowance is considered non-taxable when it is solely based on a 'reasonable' per-kilometre rate. The taxpayer may have been entitled to claim some of these as valid expenses, but he was unable to supply any evidence to back up the expenses he had claimed. He testified he had previously provided the records to the CRA by registered mail, but the CRA never received them, and he was unable to provide any backup documentation in court. This proved to be fatal for the taxpayer's claim in Tax Court. 'Maintaining books and records is an ongoing obligation in a self-assessing system and the taxpayer's failure to do so … made it impossible for him to meet the evidentiary burden … to demolish the (CRA's) assumptions' about the denied expenses,' the lower court judge wrote, citing a prior case. The taxpayer appealed the Tax Court's decision to the Federal Court of Appeal, which heard the case at the end of May. The three-judge panel of the appellate court considered whether the taxpayer had provided sufficient evidence as to the amount of his expenses to justify a deduction on his return. The taxpayer tried to argue that, notwithstanding having any receipts or backup documentation, he was found to be a 'credible witness' by the Tax Court judge, and thus his testimony as to the amount of expenses he had incurred and claimed on his tax returns should simply be believed. The appellate court disagreed, writing, 'it was not a matter of disbelieving him; it was a matter of the (taxpayer) failing to present sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the amounts claimed were in fact deductible.' How spousal RRSPs can reduce taxes without getting you in trouble Have you made a mistake or need to change your tax return? Here's how Bottom line – you could be the most honest, believable and trustworthy taxpayer, with a perfect record of tax compliance stretching back decades. But, if you are unable to back up your tax deductions with hard evidence, you are unlikely to be successful in the face of a CRA review. The IoMT improves monitoring of patients, diagnosing, and treating; the evidence suggests improved health outcomes. Collecting and presenting data in real time helps improve clinical decisions and productivity. Adoption in existing healthcare systems (particularly in developed regions) continues to support the growth of the market. Innovation is also driven by the increased demand for remote care and wearables. Support from large healthcare providers, along with socio economic factors that support economic development, enables momentum for the IoMT. Weaknesses: The complex integration of many devices and many platforms persists as a principal issue related to IoMT. Substantial issues remain for patients and providers in terms of data security and privacy as well as cybersecurity risks. The upfront capital costs, complexity of adoption, and healthcare systems in many regions of the world (many with a lack of capital in developing regions) undermine the development of IoMT systems further. In specific instances, there may be regulatory barriers to market with IoMT devices and long periods without approval. In rural areas, internet connectivity issues may seriously inhibit the rollout of systems. The level of continuing education and digital literacy amongst staff in healthcare systems (e.g. nurses) can also inhibit the use of IoMT devices. Opportunities: The continued rollout of telemedicine services (e.g., telehealth) constitutes a significant opportunity for IoMT integration. The need for IoMT solutions is exacerbated by our aging population and chronic diseases, while there is the potential for investment in healthcare systems, particularly in emerging economies. The integration of artificial intelligence offers a market opportunity to drive predictive analytics and personalized healthcare. Partnerships are forming between technology firms, IoMT companies, and healthcare providers, which could lead to exciting innovations in the future; additionally, new government programs focused on digital health can help accelerate this process. Threats: A cybersecurity breach could result in catastrophic breaches of sensitive health data and loss of trust in any health system. A regulated market creates dependencies and appears to be an adversarial process, especially when compliance changes occur and regulatory delays arise. Continued lack of awareness of the myriad of devices joining the IoMT market is an insidious threat that can continue to undermine its potential. Competitive pressures are tremendous, increasing price risks and limiting profit margins. Other worsening economic drivers could reduce, limit, or void budgets and capital for healthcare IT. Traditional healthcare systems tend to be slow and resistant to changes, which increasingly protracts and limits adoption.
