Tyler Police Department set to open new state-of-the-art training facility
TYLER, Texas (KETK) – The Tyler Police Department is creating a state-of-the-art training facility to ensure their officers are as well-trained as possible before going out on the field.
The Tyler City Council approved a $1.8 million contract with Watson Commercial Construction on Wednesday to transform the former National Guard Armory into a Regional Police Training Facility.
Tyler Police Department deploys extra officers for Memorial Day weekend
The armory, which is currently located on East Commerce Street, will be converted by the Tyler PD into a centralized training hub for cadets and current officers.
The new facility will include scenario-based training areas, classrooms, locker rooms and a gym. The new environment is intended to give officers and cadets the tools and resources needed to sharpen their skills and better respond to emergencies.
The facility will be funded through the Half Cent Sales Tax and will allow Tyler PD to maintain and build on its standards.

Man accused of shooting Marysville police officer indicted on nine charges
MARYSVILLE, Ohio (WCMH) — The man accused of shooting at a Marysville police officer before he drove away has been indicted on nine charges, including attempted aggravated murder. A Union County grand jury returned the indictment Friday against Dustin M. Ohm, 29, of Marysville. On May 30, police responded to a domestic dispute call on White Oak Court. According to details from police and Union County Prosecutor David Phillips, a sergeant tried to get Ohm, who was impaired, to exit his pickup truck. He refused and revved his engine. As the sergeant moved to deploy her taser, Ohm fired at nearly point-blank range. The sergeant was struck by shattered glass and two shots were found embedded in a house. Ohm then reportedly fired at three other officers, coming under return fire, and drove away. He crashed into multiple cars, including a police cruiser, exiting the neighborhood. The chase was joined by sheriff's deputies and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, ending on U.S. 33 in the median strip near Northwest Parkway. Ohm got out of the car armed and was shot several times by law enforcement. Phillips said that Ohm was also struck by a self-inflicted gunshot. The charges that Ohm faces are: Attempted aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer Three counts of felonious assault on a peace officer Having weapons while under disability Two counts of failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer Discharging a firearm at or into a habitation Vandalism The sergeant struck by Ohm was treated at a hospital, and Ohm remains in a hospital under guard, Phillips said. The shooting of the Marysville officer was one of several times that central Ohio law enforcement officers have come under fire in recent weeks. A Morrow County deputy was fatally shot on Memorial Day, and two Mifflin Township officers were shot by a man on probation, sparking a manhunt after he ran away. Ohm is due in court on June 25. Hundreds of protests are scheduled across the country on June 14 to coincide with a pricey military parade in Washington, D.C. The 'No Kings Day' protests will take place on President Donald Trump's birthday as he throws a military parade with an estimated cost of $25 million to $40 million, according to Politico. The protests against Trump are part of a national movement that has been gathering steam since his Jan. 20 inauguration. 'This is bigger than political disagreement,' notes a statement by organizers on their No Kings toolkit page. 'They've defied our courts, deported American citizens, disappeared people off the streets, and slashed our services — all while orchestrating a massive giveaway to their billionaire allies.' The June 14 military parade has been framed as a celebration of the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary of its founding. It is also Trump's 79th birthday. A festival at the National Mall will follow. Flights into Washington, D.C. will be halted during the event, according to multiple media reports. There have been other events and celebrations for the Army so far this year, but nothing is advertised beyond June 14. Reactions to the parade have been mixed, with some criticizing the optics, given the timing with Trump's birthday. 'Prior presidents have used military regalia to celebrate or mark other moments,' noted historian Joshua Zeitz, contributing editor at Politico Magazine in an interview with NPR. 'There are obviously military ceremonies that happen, for instance, at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day. There's a military presence at inaugurations. Local officer resigns after OVI arrest
A local officer has resigned after he was arrested for reportedly driving under the influence in Indiana. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Clayton officer Jacob Filbrun was arrested by police in Fort Wayne, Indiana, over Memorial Day weekend for a suspected OVI after attending an event, according to a statement from Clayton Police Chief Matt Hamlin.
