Neymar in tears after worst defeat of his career as Philippe Coutinho embarrasses him
Neymar broke down in tears as his Santos side were dismantled 6-0 by Brazilian rivals Vasco da Gama over the weekend, with ex-Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho, Neymar's former Brazil team-mate, shining for the visitors.
Vasco da Gama had sat just outside of the relegation zone in the Brazilian top flight on Sunday, but it couldn't have gone much worse for Santos.
Lucas Piton gave the away side the lead in the 18th minute, while David Correa da Fonseca doubled the advantage. Coutinho then scored a brace either side of a Rayan penalty.
Danilo Neves rounded off the rout and Neymar was spotted in tears come the final whistle. And he did not mince his words with his post-match assessment of his team's performance.
He said: "I'm ashamed. I'm totally disappointed with our performance. The fans have every right to protest, obviously without using violence ... But if they want to curse and insult, they're in their right.
"It's a feeling of extreme shame. I've never experienced this in my life. Unfortunately, it happened. The tears were from anger, from everything. Unfortunately, I can't help in every way. Anyway, it was total s***, that's the reality."
Santos' latest defeat leaves them 15th in the Brazilian top flight and just two points clear of the relegation zone after 19 games of the season. And club chiefs have chosen to make a change in the aftermath by sacking manager Cleber Xavier.
A short club statement read: 'Santos FC announces the departure of coach Cleber Xavier. The club thanks him for his service and wishes him well in his future career.'
Neymar's return to his boyhood club has not quite gone the way he would have hoped so far. The 33-year-old rejoined the side in January following an injury-hit spell with Saudi outfit Al-Hilal.
Since then, he has scored six goals and notched three assists in 19 appearances in all competitions. His contract is set to expire at the end of 2025.
Santos and Neymar will be back in action this coming weekend as they travel to Bahia. It remains to be seen who will be leading the side for that game following the change in management.

Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo delivered a telling message as he spoke out after allegedly suffering racist abuse during a defeat to Liverpool. The Cherries star reported to the referee that he had been subjected to racist abuse by a Liverpool fan during the first half at Anfield. The match was briefly paused as the referee spoke to both managers and players from both sides showed support to Semenyo. A Liverpool supporter was eventually removed from the stadium as the game continued. The Reds went 2-0 up through goals from Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo, but then Semenyo scored twice after the break to put the away team level. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. It looked like Bournemouth were going to snatch a famous point, but substitute Federico Chiesa and then Mohamed Salah scored late to win the match 4-2 for Liverpool. A thrilling opening fixture should have been the only talking point from Friday's action at Anfield, but instead the focus was rightly on the alleged abuse directs towards Semenyo. And speaking out after the game, the 25-year-old illustrated once again that it was not just inside the grounds where players face regular abuse. Posting a screenshot of a vile racist comment left on his Instagram account, Semenyo: 'When will it stop…' Meanwhile, Bournemouth's captain Adam Smith praised the mentality of Semenyo to remain so level-headed in the face of such adversity. 'Totally unacceptable, shocked it happened in this day and age, it shouldn't be happening,' Smith told Sky Sports post-match. 'I don't know how Ants played on and come up with them goals. It's just totally unacceptable, I just feel sorry for Ants. He's down, obviously. Something needs to be done, taking a knee has had no effect. 'To be honest, I wanted him to react because that's what I would have done, I would have gone straight over there. But that shows what type of man he is to not react even in the moment. He reported it to the ref and to score those two goals, it shows what type of guy he is and what type of character he has, so fair play to Ants.' Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever – not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together. To my Bournemouth teammates who supported me in that moment, to the Liverpool players and fans who showed their true character, to the Premier League officials who handled it professionally – thank you. Football showed its best side when it mattered most. Scoring those two goals felt like speaking the only language that truly matters on the pitch. This is why I play – for moments like these, for my teammates, for everyone who believes in what this beautiful game can be. The overwhelming messages of support from across the football world remind me why I love this sport. We keep moving forward, together. On his own reaction to the incident, Smith said: 'Angry, to be honest. Shocked. I said to the ref I wanted him removed immediately. The Liverpool players were very supportive towards Antoine and the rest of the team. I think it was handled in the right way, but just so angry. 'We've had discussions with he Premier League about it so they have been taking it seriously. I don't know what else we can do, we've been doing it for a long time now and no one's getting it. I don't know what to say anymore.' A Premier League statement read: 'Tonight's match between Liverpool Football Club and AFC Bournemouth was temporarily paused during the first half after a report of discriminatory abuse from the crowd, directed at Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo. This is in line with the Premier League's on-field anti-discrimination protocol. 'The incident at Anfield will now be fully investigated. We offer our full support to the player and both clubs. Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society. We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.' "It overshadows what should be an amazing night. The first day of the Premier League season, a beautiful day."Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher speak after an allegation of a racist comment aimed at Antoine Semenyo from a member of the crowd at Anfield. — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) August 15, 2025 The FA added: 'We are very concerned about the allegation of discrimination from an area of the crowd, which was reported to the match officials during the Premier League fixture between Liverpool and Bournemouth. More Trending 'Incidents of this nature have no place in our game, and we will work closely with the match officials, the clubs and the relevant authorities to establish the facts and ensure the appropriate action is taken.' A statement from Liverpool read: 'Liverpool Football Club is aware of an allegation of racist abuse made during our Premier League game against AFC Bournemouth. 'We condemn racism and discrimination in all forms, it has no place in society or football. 'The club is unable to comment further as tonight's alleged incident is the subject of an ongoing police investigation, which we will support fully.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
